Football 2024 PGSF NFL mock draft--Complete.

With the 191st pick the Colts select:

USATSI_19284950.jpg

Curtis Jacobs LB , Penn State

Good size, moves well and has good instincts. Jacobs is a developmental player who can help on special teams while he tries to secure a spot.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Three-year starter with solid production on a unit that has been full of talent during his tenure. Jacobs has good size and play strength but offers average range as a tackler. He plays with active hands and can work around blocks, but he's often a step slow in diagnosing the play. Jacobs can fit run gaps and make plays that are in front of him, but he doesn't show consistent enough field awareness to expect he'll make plays on all three downs. His speed testing was average at the NFL Scouting Combine, but his overall explosiveness was strong, which could make him a Day 3 target with backup and special teams potential.

Strengths

  • Possesses solid size and play strength for the position.
  • Can punch and separate when his technique is right.
  • Maintains active hands to work from blocker to blocker.
  • Displays body control to alter speeds in leveraging outside run.
  • Does a decent job of sifting through box traffic to get downhill.
  • Approaches tackle tries in tackle-ready position with wide stance.

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't play with the instincts teams typically look for at his position.
  • Allows play-side shoulder to get covered up and loses contain positioning.
  • Would like to see a little more aggression as a hitter/tackler.
  • Loses foot race to the boundary when trying to cut off angle on the running back.
  • Lacks desired reactive athleticism as an open-field tackler.
  • Below-average option as a blitzer and cover man on passing downs.

Happy War Eagle GIF by Auburn Tigers

Jaylin Simpson DB, Auburn.

John Schneider and company are quite pleased with how they've addressed specific needs to this point in the draft and now select the top prospect left on their board with the intention of building roster depth and looking toward the future. Simpson is a versatile defensive back who will work toward gaining a starting spot that will inevitably come open while providing quality depth throughout the secondary in the meantime.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Long defensive back with speed, athleticism and ball skills that might have teams posting him in the cornerback column instead of at safety. Simpson has started at both positions but might be caught between the two. He doesn’t support the run well enough to instill confidence as a last line of defense and he can be a little tardy to get his hips flipped in one-on-one transitions as a corner. Simpson does pedal and match receivers in space, balancing his eyes between route progressions and the quarterback as a high safety. He also contests catches with good success. He’s a good football player with explosive traits, but teams will need to have a plan for how to use him.

Strengths

  • Able to reroute from bump-and-run coverages when pressing.
  • Transitions from smooth backpedal to sudden gather and burst.
  • Above-average change-of-direction quickness and closing burst.
  • Natural ball-hawking instincts show up with his angles to the throw.
  • Length to meet catch point at the same time as the receiver.
  • Triggers from safety perch to strike crossing routes with jarring contact.

Weaknesses

  • Tall but slightly built with limited room for additional mass.
  • Gets pushed around by blockers as a safety or a cornerback.
  • Troubling angles in run support will turn into missed tackles and chunk runs.
  • Slight hiccup when trying to swivel hips in transition and run with go routes.
  • Ball-hawking aggression creates issues for him on double moves

Dylan Laube RB, New Hampshire

Bill may be gone, but this guy is a BB pick. Smart player who can play multiple roles that has a think strong middle..

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 6

Overview

Do-it-all small-school prospect with versatility and production that could create a roster advantage for him in the future. Laube's pro potential will likely be tied to how a team uses him. While he can be an efficient zone-scheme runner, he lacks the sudden burst and elusiveness needed as a pro. However, he's a very capable pass-catcher with the ability to run a variety of routes out of the backfield or from the slot. While Laube won't blow NFL teams away as a runner, his potential to return kicks and compete for a role on third downs should give him a leg up in a battle for a roster spot.

Strengths

  • Posted considerable production across all phases of involvement.
  • Runs efficient one-cut tracks with lowered pads and short strides.
  • Effective setting up tacklers into oncoming blocks.
  • Legitimate route runner from the slot, with pace and hip sink intro breaks.
  • Able to have a big impact on games out of the backfield.
  • Scored four career touchdowns as kick and punt returner.

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't have size or power to break NFL tackles as an inside runner.
  • Below-average lateral footwork to elude linebackers in the hole.
  • Needs passes on his frame due to limited catch radius.
  • Will require better technique to square up blitzers in pass protection.

With the 194th pick the Bengals select Kimani Vidal RB, Troy.

After trading away Joe Mixon, Cincy could definitely use some replenishment of their running back room. Vidal was a workhorse for the Trojans and features a bowling ball running style that should provide a strong complement to Zack Moss and Chase Brown in the Bengals' backfield.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Sawed-off running back with muscular frame and truckload of touches over the last two seasons. The production looks good, but the work was hard as his offensive line struggled with consistency in 2023. He lacks quality burst and elusiveness between the tackles and has trouble outrunning pursuit when plays flow wide. He can get what is blocked and can be tough to get down once in the open field. He’s a plus pass catcher but might not be good enough in protection to warrant third-down value. Vidal could be an underdog to make a roster.

Strengths

  • Workhorse back with production to match over the last two years.
  • Relies on lower-body flexion for sharper cutbacks in zone.
  • Has a nose for the paint once he’s near the goal line.
  • Good upfield acceleration after the catch.
  • Takes concerted effort to get him down in open spaces.

Weaknesses

  • Jump-cuts fail to gain enough lateral ground for escapes.
  • Below-average speed to the corner when runs spill wide.
  • Not very deceptive as an inside runner.
  • Needs to learn to set up tacklers to create more lane clarity.
  • Fails to create much forward momentum when hitting the holes

With the 195th pick the Steelers select
jhaquan-jackson-draft-scouting-2024-1920x1280.jpg

Jha'Quan Jackson WR , Tulane

Smaller slot who offers big play potential, will need to work on consistency

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Undersized slot receiver offering the versatility to create chunk-play opportunities over all three levels. Jackson is slight of frame and plays with slightly below-average competitiveness as a ball-winner when confronted. He has the speed and separation burst to get open but will need to prove he can become a more skillful route runner to uncover against NFL competition. Inconsistent hands are a concern at this stage. Jackson has gadget potential and can compete for a role as a punt returner, but the league is filled with good athletes at the slot, so he will need to find a way to separate from the pack.

Strengths

  • Scored touchdowns as receiver, rusher and punt returner in college career.
  • Pure gas to stretch the field vertically and target the deep middle across the field.
  • Maintains top play speed throughout the route.
  • Possesses foot agility and separation burst for shake routes underneath.
  • Picks up momentum in the open field with the ball in his hands.
  • Versatility offers options for offensive play-callers.

Weaknesses

  • Needs to prove he can elude press defender sitting under his chin.
  • Relies on athleticism over technique as a route runner.
  • Hand-eye coordination and hand strength as pass catcher are lacking.
  • Very average toughness as runner after the catch.

With the 196th pick the Rams select:

Byu Football Sport GIF by BYU Cougars

Kedon Slovis QB, BYU.

Sean McVay is quite familiar with this two-time college transfer, with his Rams having shared the Coliseum as their home stadium during Slovis' time as a Trojan. In 2019 Slovis was awarded the Pac-12 Freshman Offensive POY after throwing for over 3500 yards with 30 TD'S vs. only nine picks. Here he's taken to compete with Jimmy G and Stetson Bennett to be 36 year-old Matthew Stafford's backup. With hard work and proper development, perhaps Slovis will be the long-term answer once Stafford retires.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Five-year starter with experience at three different schools. Slovis was the talk of college football after completing 72 percent of his passes with 30 touchdowns and 9 interceptions as a freshman in 2019. Since that time, his overall play and production have declined. He has good size and throws with decent timing but doesn’t have enough arm strength to make pro throws into tight windows on a consistent basis. He struggles with deep-ball accuracy and occasionally puts throws up for grabs when he’s under pressure. Slovis will likely face an uphill battle to make a team.

Strengths

  • Holds safeties and linebackers in place with his eyes.
  • Unafraid to lay throws between linebacker and safety.
  • Decent feel for where opportunities exist versus coverages.
  • Operates with adequate timing as an intermediate passer.
  • Has taken plenty of snaps in pro-style passing attacks.
  • Feels pressure and keeps sack total relatively low.

Weaknesses

  • Production mostly declined after first two seasons at USC.
  • Hasn’t always prioritized taking care of the football.
  • Passes tend to flutter and float on field-side throws.
  • Missed time due to injury in two of the last three seasons.

With the 197th pick the Falcons select:

StockJavontaeJeanBaptiste1.jpg

Javontae Jean-Baptiste EDGE , Notre Dame

Good size needs to get on a strength program to add some bulk
Has an upside, and could become a rotational piece or top-end solid back u.

Overview

After a five-year run at Ohio State with modest production, Jean-Baptiste’s Notre Dame tape has put him in position to become a developmental Day 3 draft pick. He has good length but lacks play strength to stack and discard tackles. He’ll need to hit the weights to improve his anchor, but he has the footwork and agility to slide off of block sustain and make tackles. He’s a step slow off the snap, dulling his ability to outrace tackles to the edge, but he flashes the hands and hips to become a more impactful rusher if teams rewire his rush plan. There is still a level of upside available for Jean-Baptiste.

Strengths

  • Possesses desired length of an NFL edge defender.
  • Slips off of blocks to find runners.
  • Good back-side burst and is always working toward the ball-carrier.
  • Slips around tackles with loose hips and shoulders at the top of the rush.
  • Footwork and body control create fluid rush transitions.
  • Flashes athleticism and hand usage to take a step forward as a rusher.

Weaknesses

  • A step late getting out of his stance off the snap.
  • Needs to improve play strength in both upper/lower body.
  • Not much anchor to prevent being widened out off the edge.
  • Poor pad level gets him pushed off the mark on inside rush moves.
  • Rush potential gets bogged down by ill-advised power charges.

With the 198th pick the Dolphins select Ryan Flournoy WR, Southeast Missouri State.

Miami boasts two great wideouts in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but a better third option is needed, especially when one or both of these thoroughbreds is injured. Flournoy is a highly promising small school prospect who comes with good size and impressive workout numbers. He has some rough edges but shined during Senior Bowl week, and even as a late-round selection he could well contribute immediately.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Flournoy offers size and football character that is pro-caliber but has areas where he must improve. Against off-man, Flournoy utilizes his size and ball skills to stack catches. Against press, however, he can be tardy off the release and becomes reliant on physicality over route acumen to create throwing windows for his quarterback. The route running is undisciplined but can be sharpened with work. The lack of suddenness could hold him back against tight man coverage, though. Flournoy had some memorable reps at the Senior Bowl, which could make him a Day 3 pick with a shot at a roster spot.

Strengths

  • Possesses size and physique of an NFL target.
  • Commitment to vertical push in drive phase of the route.
  • Works back into top positioning on throws underneath.
  • Catches with sudden, sticky hands and has a feel for congestion around him.
  • Elusive and physical with the ball in his hands.
  • Head coach raves about coachability and team-first mentality.

Weaknesses

  • Hit-or-miss eluding physical press coverage in his release.
  • Routes tend to be unfocused at times.
  • Footwork can become clunky getting into intermediate breaks.
  • Lacks knee bend and suddenness to create consistent separation.

With the 199th pick the Saints select:

StockLoganLee1-768x432.jpg

Logan Lee DT, Iowa

Good size, who plays the run well. Needs to work on strength and pass rush, but has good instincts so there is some upside.

Overview

Durable three-year starter as an undersized defensive tackle in the aggressive Iowa front. Lee has the size and length of a 5-technique but might not possess enough twitch and power to control blockers from that spot. He has good strength but needs time to ramp it up and doesn't have as many quick wins as teams will want. Lee's pass rush is very pedestrian but could improve some with better hand work and training. He's a hard worker but fails to stand out with power, quickness or pass-rush talent, which puts a firm cap on his upside.

Strengths

  • Started in three straight seasons without missing a game.
  • Has enough shed strength to match up as a 3-4 end in the pros.
  • Upper-body power to press and extend at point of attack.
  • Capable of slipping around blocks from half-man positioning.
  • Rush shows life when he's working toward the opposite gap.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks mass and play strength needed to grapple inside.
  • Stays hung up on sustain blocks for far too long.
  • Doesn't have the foot quickness to create mismatches inside.
  • Not explosive enough to crank up a menacing bull rush.
  • Gets pushed off his rush track by punch power.

With the 200th pick the Bills select Marcus Harris DT, Auburn.

At this point the Bills take the top remaining player on their board. Harris is a bit undersized but logged seven sacks as a senior. There's plenty to work with here, and he should soon provide quality depth for the interior of Buffalo's d-line.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
NFL Comparison
Timmy Jernigan

Overview

Playmaking interior lineman who makes up for his lack of size with quickness and instincts. Harris punches above his weight class in the strength department, utilizing upper-body power and lower-body balance to fight the good fight. He'll get moved around by bigger bodies, but he's relentless and has the athleticism to find his way back into plays. He has skilled hands and the lateral quickness to dive into gaps as both a run defender and pass rusher. Harris' best chance to succeed will be as a one-gapper in an even front where he can become a very good rotational defender or eventual starter.

Strengths

  • Highly instinctive with skilled hands and a feel for playmaking.
  • Clever show-and-go punch makes linemen fall off balance.
  • Uses angles and first-step quickness to create disruptions.
  • Low center of gravity maximizes contact balance and leverage.
  • Excellent range and agility to tackle as an interior defender.
  • Active feet and well-timed hand counters create rush chances.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average length to rip and toss blocker off of him.
  • Undersized and gets knocked back by centered power.
  • Can be swallowed and neutralized by size.
  • Pass rush lacks the consistent get-off that his run defense has.

With the 201st pick the Lions select:
layden-robinson-draft-profile.jpg

Layden Robinson OG, Texas A&M

Good size for a guard, who has physical traits that warrant a late-round pick. Robinson is a work in process and the Lions might be a perfect fit with the coaches they have in place.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5

Overview

Guard prospect in desperate need of improved pass protection consistency in order to unleash his potential. Robinson's mass played a pivotal role in helping to escort defenders out of the lane for Aggie running backs. Hand placement and getting into his blocks with proper footwork should come with additional coaching. However, his performances at the Senior Bowl and NFL Scouting Combine have worked against his draft stock. Robinson pass protects with excessive leaning, inconsistent mirroring and trouble processing twists and blitzes. Teams will need to decide if his protection issues are correctable and decide how to prioritize his power at the point of attack when considering him on Day 3 of the draft.

Strengths

  • Broadly built bully with thick limbs for ground and pound.
  • Accelerates into initial contact, creating consistent early displacement.
  • Sustains and finishes blocks at an impressive rate.
  • Relatively nimble feet getting into skip pulls and tagging linebackers on climb-ups.
  • Has arm length to reach and redirect in pass pro.
  • Tremendous power in his hands to wake up pass rushers.

Weaknesses

  • Plays with elevated pad level, muting ability to seal the block.
  • Gets too hurried fitting blocks and loses proper positioning.
  • Could use better attention to detail with hand placement as run blocker.
  • Frequently off balance and too far out over his pads in protection.
  • Confounded by twists/blitzes and will be targeted often by NFL coordinators.
  • Fails to meet pass-rush movements with proper foot slide to defend his edge.

Braelon Allen RB, Wisconsin.

Green Bay selects an in-state product to challenge A.J. Dillon for carries behind the newly-acquired Josh Jacobs. Opinions about Allen are mixed following a final season in Madison where his stats dropped off a bit due to being slowed by a high-ankle sprain. He's certainly worth a sixth-round pick for a team who needs to improve its depth at running back.

Draft Projection
Rounds 3-4
NFL Comparison
Michael Bush

Overview

Allen's splashy entry into college football had evaluators excited about what the end product might look like, but now there are more questions than answers. Allen has rare size on an imposing frame, and his production is nothing to scoff at. Evaluators will need to rely more heavily on his 2022 tape, where he ran with better decisiveness and instincts in a pro-style running attack. He's built to be a banger but needs to embrace a consistently physical style, as he lacks the footwork and hips to elude defenders with finesse. Allen will compete for a role as a two-down backup but could bolster his chances for success if he plays at a lighter weight, to improve his quickness.

Strengths

  • Enormous runner with overbearing, athletic build and impressive production.
  • In 2021 and 2022, showed he could trust his eyes and run with more decisiveness than he did in 2023.
  • Can play bumper cars with tacklers in space to add up yards after contact.
  • Has build-up speed in the open field and throws his stiff-arm like a boxer's jab.
  • Instinctive in short yardage, with high success rate on short-yardage carries.
  • Good understanding of protection duties and has size to square and stop the blitz.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average burst to race through the line of scrimmage.
  • Tight-hipped with lethargic change of direction in tight spaces.
  • Would like to see more ferocity finishing runs to send messages.
  • Slow to accelerate after a cut and lacks general escapability.
  • Carries the football away from his body, leading to fumbles

Sources Tell Us

USATSI_21383170-1600x900.jpg

Johnny Dixon CB, Penn State

Athletic and tough CB with decent ball skills, and projects as nickel who offers versatility but lacks measurables to be a starter at this point.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Feisty man cover cornerback with above-average competitiveness in coverage but missing some key attributes that might be necessary for true NFL success. Dixon gives out bumpy rides against press release and does a nice job of creating coverage leverage with his footwork, but he struggles to get his hips opened when crossed up or when flipping to match a vertical route. He has below-average speed deep but can smother routes with physicality and ball skills when he stays attached. His technique and effort as a tackler needs to improve. The cover skills are fine, but questionable NFL speed and fluidity could create too many coverage inconsistencies as a pro.

Strengths

  • Expends determination and energy to redirect release from press.
  • Smothers most routes with an outside release to the boundary.
  • Excellent feel for creating leverage relative to coverage scheme.
  • Determined to hog up as much late catch space as possible.
  • Timing and aggression make it hard for opponents to complete contested catches.
  • Loads of experience as a boundary and add-on blitzer.

Weaknesses

  • Unable to get feet and hips in sync for fluid vertical transitions.
  • Below-average juice to play catch-up when he gets behind.
  • Needs to trust his technique and cut back on the grabbing and pulling.
  • Could become a target in the red zone when matched up against size.
  • Fairly uninvolved in run support and misses too many tackles after the catch.

Tennessee Football Volunteers GIF by Tennessee Athletics

Joe Milton QB, Tennessee.

Buffalo selects a bit of a project here...a prospect with an incredible arm and athletic talent who it hopes to mold into an NFL-level signal-caller. Not to compare Milton to Josh Allen, but the latter had similar things said about him when he came out of Wyoming.

Brian Daboll is no longer around to smooth out Milton's rough edges as he did with Allen, but at worst the Bills would have wasted only a late-round pick if things don't work out. At best, Milton can be developed and then perhaps flipped for a higher selection in the future.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 5

Overview

Rare physical specimen with the proverbial "arm talent to make all the NFL throws," but he's prevented from doing so by a lack of timing, accuracy and touch. Milton is gifted with a cannon for a right arm and can throw the ball as hard or as far as you want. His fastballs are often inaccurate and difficult to catch for moving targets, and he was wildly inconsistent locating his deep throws. He can elude pressure, extend plays and put jaw-dropping highlights on tape, but he's never been able to mature his game from splashy to consistent. He's primarily a single-side reader who struggles to improvise with his eyes. The physical ingredients could get him drafted on Day 3, but his lack of development over six seasons discourages his projection.

Strengths

  • Elite size and arm strength are both well beyond positional norms.
  • Throws blazing heat to beat coverage into tight windows.
  • Delivers long off-platform throws with the flick of the wrist.
  • Will stand his ground and take punishing hits to make the throw.
  • Able to keep eyes downfield while deftly sliding around pocket pressure.
  • Posted 32 TDs against just five INTs over three seasons at Tennessee.
  • Strong against potential sacks and escapes the pocket to extend the play.

Weaknesses

  • Disturbing lack of placement and timing as a deep-ball passer.
  • Completed just 38.6 percent of his throws beyond 10 yards (per Pro Football Focus) in 2023.
  • Struggles with anticipatory throws, running receivers into collisions.
  • Telegraphs throws between the hashes, giving safeties an easy jump on the ball.
  • Desires to throw the ball through receivers rather than deliver with touch.
  • Inconsistent tying his feet to eyes and squaring to his targets.
  • Frequently forces moving targets to break stride to try to make the catch.

Decamerion Richardson CB, Mississippi St

Lions look to bolster the defensive backfield. Richardson has good size and speed , needs to improve his ball skills. With size and speed Richardson can contribute on special teams.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Two-year starting cornerback with outstanding physical features but below-average coverage features. He’s leggy with below-average lateral transitions and change of direction in space. Richardson doesn’t play with enough anticipation or short-area burst to make plays on the ball but does have a big make-up gear in a straight line. He’s OK as a tackler but should get better with a greater focus in that department. Richardson’s size and top-end speed will immediately garner attention, but he doesn’t appear to have the skill set to play safety and will be limited by a narrow scheme fit.

Strengths

  • Exceptional size and length for the position.
  • Makes it tough to create catch space on 50/50 throws.
  • Ramps up the recovery burst and closes the distance.
  • Works at maintaining contain positioning against run blocks.
  • Rarely loses his grip on a tackle once he sinks it in.

Weaknesses

  • Too upright in his backpedal and transitions.
  • Below-average balance when attempting to shadow receivers.
  • Needs better eye balance between quarterback and receiver.
  • Long legs limit short-area quickness and burst to close on throws.
  • Needs to ramp up aggression attacking blocks in run support.

College Football Good Job GIF by Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic

Josh Proctor S, Ohio State.

Cleveland takes another local product to boost its secondary depth. Proctor is a bit raw but has experience at both safety spots and can also contribute on special teams.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Proctor might be a little older than a typical draft prospect, but he saved his best football for his last season. He has a long, athletic frame and does a nice job with his footwork to prevent his coverage movements from becoming too leggy. He can align over big slot targets and has the instincts and ball skills to make plays underneath, but coverage can slip away from him when pure long speed is involved. Proctor has always been a plus run defender and adequate tackler, whether he's playing near the line or as a split safety. His speed could work against him, but he's talented enough to compete for a backup role.

Strengths

  • Above-average break anticipation in off-man slot alignment.
  • Plays with good eye balance and a readiness to respond from short zone.
  • Made good use of size and length to disrupt and contest catches.
  • Backpedals with choppy, controlled steps, allowing quick transitions.
  • Fires into the alley from safety spot with good contain angle.
  • Shows off agility and lateral spring as a short-area tackler.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average speed to play over the top or recover when beaten.
  • Coverage limitations arise the further he gets from the line of scrimmage.
  • As likely to drop a potential interception as he is to catch it.
  • Misses tackles when he comes in high and hot on his target.

Braiden McGregor EDGE, Michigan

Braiden has the look and on-field toughness of a day one starter, but the technique has to improve to be a contributor. The potential makes the late-round pick worth it

Overview

McGregor has good size and length for a stand-up rusher. Teams will like the frame and the toughness, but he's not a natural knee-bender at the point of attack. There is room for better hand placement as a run defender and hand skill as a pass rusher. He won't overwhelm opponents with twitch or short-area quickness, so it might be important for McGregor to keep adding play strength in order to become a more willful challenger as a backup edge in odd or even fronts.

Strengths

  • Possesses NFL body type, with the ability to add more mass.
  • Effective stab-and-run timing at the top of the rush.
  • Fires direct hands for first contact at point of attack.
  • Sees running back and bounces off block to wrap and finish.
  • Effective T/E twists with good setup and fluid loop to the pocket.
  • Raked in 3.5 sacks over his final five games.

Weaknesses

  • Short-area quickness and lateral agility appear average.
  • Hands slip off-target, allowing blockers into his frame.
  • Will need to continue getting stronger in uppers and lowers.
  • Leg drive diminishes after contact on speed-to-power.
  • Rush was shut down against Penn State tackles.
  • Tore ACL, PCL and meniscus in his right knee his senior season in high school.

With the 208th pick the Raiders select:

Illinois Football GIF by Fighting Illini Athletics

Tip Reiman TE, Illinois.

The run on B1G players continues as Vegas selects a big H-back style tight end whose forte is blocking and doing it very well. Reiman caught only a handful of passes while at Illinois, but that's not why the Raiders are drafting him. Antonio Pierce wants his team to be tough and physical like the old-time Raiders.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 4

Overview

The former walk-on became a team captain in 2023. He's a huge Y tight end capable of becoming a quality run blocker in the NFL. Hand placement limits his consistency, but that should get corrected. He blocks with good leg drive and plays with some nasty at the point of attack. He'll be better working double-teams and combo blocks than blocking in space. He's the type of garden-variety pass catcher that you would expect a run-blocking specialist to be. Reiman's career will be defined by how he blocks, which should be good enough to make it in the league.

Strengths

  • Outstanding size and lean mass for an in-line blocker.
  • Possesses adequate length and huge hands.
  • Big target for quick sink routes against zone.
  • Impressive leg drive to wash down defensive ends.
  • Lays into defenders in space with meaningful pop.
  • Blocks with ideal base and mirror when asked to protect passer.

Weaknesses

  • Heavy-legged into his routes and breaks.
  • Unable to separate from man coverage in the seam.
  • Lacks upper-body agility to open and catch throws behind him.
  • Needs to block with tighter hands in the run game.
  • Must improve body control and positioning to better sustain

1898127134.jpg

Jaylen Harrell Edge, Michigan

Good player with decent size lacks elite athleticism for the position which may be limiting.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Good athlete but lacking size, play strength and aggression to thrive as an edge defender on the next level. Harrell fails to strike and take command of blocks early on and can be widened out by stronger run-blocking tight ends. He's fairly talented at ungluing from blocks and darting laterally to get in on tackles. His pass rush will need to become his bread and butter if he is to make an NFL squad. He has a legitimate spin counter but will need to prove he can win around the corner with quickness and hand work. Harrell could be a Day 3 selection, and teams might eventually give him a shot as an off-ball linebacker.

Strengths

  • Impressive wingspan and big hands for his size.
  • As the son of former pro James Harrell, he comes from NFL bloodlines.
  • Flashes good reactive quickness as open-field tackler.
  • Has developed inside spin move into legitimate rush-winner.
  • Sets up tackles by charging upfield before knifing under and into the pocket.

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't play with enough aggressiveness for the next level.
  • Lacks the anchor and grit to secure positioning as edge-setter.
  • Plays with unusually short strides.
  • Unable to generate speed into power with his rush.
  • Needs to become more threatening in his race to the top of the rush.

Bow Down Purple Reign GIF by Washington Athletics

Zion Tupuola-Fetui Edge, Washington.

Howie Roseman loves his pass rushers and here selects yet another former member of last season's national runners-up to bolster that group. ZTF is a high energy and high effort defender who should fit right in in Philly.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Overview

Urgent edge defender with the physical dimensions and all-day motor to stick on a roster. Tupuola-Fetui’s fidgety pre-snap movement foreshadows his desire to get off the mark and get to work. He has quality play strength and rarely sits on blocks, using spin moves and shed techniques to free himself. Despite unorthodox movement, he’s functionally athletic, although he lacks ideal short area change of direction. The sack production isn’t exciting but he’s a disciplined rusher with good hand work and stays active around the pocket. Tupuola-Fetui is an energy player who keeps charging hard through contact and could become a decent rotational 3-4 edge.

Strengths

  • Disciplined to work back under when rush hits pocket depth.
  • Instinctive hands chop/swipe outside hand to loosen the edge.
  • Secondary rush bolstered by power and active, running feet.
  • Excellent hand usage to help work across run blocker’s face.
  • Hard-charging playing style with desired field demeanor.
  • Has experience bailing off the line and dropping into the flat.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average short-area foot quickness.
  • Still searching for optimal counters when his rush stalls.
  • Motor makes him fun to watch, but his play lacks control at times.
  • Work to do if he’s going to set and control an NFL edge

With the 211th pick the 49ers:

716x384.jpg

Dwight McGlothern CB, Arkansas

The 49ers add 3 CB to the draft to try and shore up the backfield. Dwight is a former receiver who has good awareness but lacks elite speed so may need to be a zone defender.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 5-6

Overview

Ball-hawking cornerback with the eyes, instincts and ball skills to flip the field against careless quarterbacks. McGlothern can press a little bit and handle some man coverage. However, he might be at his best in zone coverages, where he can scan the field and play chess with the route combinations and quarterbacks. He overlaps coverage areas to make plays on the football and has Cover 3 cornerback written all over him. McGlothern is passive as a run defender, which will slide him down the board for some teams. He possesses average speed and athleticism, but the skills are there to label him a Day 3 prospect with upside.

Strengths

  • Long outside cornerback with eight career interceptions.
  • Sits down in off-man and zone waiting to pounce on throws.
  • Very decisive to trigger when the quarterback's eyes start lingering.
  • Length and instincts to play high-low route combos from low to high.
  • Prioritizes beating receiver to the catch point underneath.
  • Capable of shutting feet down quickly from shuffle to phase comeback routes.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks body control and footwork necessary for consistent press technique.
  • Collected flags in 2022 after panicking when beaten down the field.
  • Aggressive mentality will set him up for pump-and-go losses.
  • Needs to open and sprint with better timing on deep routes.
  • Moves away from lead blockers, as if he is looking to avoid the contact in run support.

With the 212th pick the Jaguars select Rasheen Ali RB, Marshall.

The Jags could use some quality depth added to their backfield. Ali was known for regularly getting the most out of his carries for a Marshall team without great blocking.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 5-6

Overview

Ali's tape is a fun watch. He's a loose-limbed runner with a blend of instincts and agility that create an admirable rate of consistency relative to the inconsistency of the blocking in front of him. He does a nice job of reading his blocks and shifting speeds to get where he needs to go, but his wiggle and run strength are just average by NFL standards. Ali doesn't appear to have enough acceleration or speed to rush away from speedy defenders, but he is a natural one-cut back. His touchdown production and third-down ability could improve his chances of finding work as an RB3.

Strengths

  • Knee-bender with ideal one-cut acceleration for stretch plays.
  • Instinctive and fluid to read and react to block development.
  • No issues toggling between patience and decisiveness when finding his way.
  • Spins out of or away from tackles to reignite the run.
  • Has a history of lining up wide or from the slot in empty sets.
  • Mirrors incoming blitzers and never flinches into contact.

Weaknesses

  • Will take shots under his pads before he's able to finish.
  • Fewer jump cuts and more finish when pursuit rallies outside to him.
  • Has good initial burst but average top-end speed.
  • Runs into blockers unnecessarily.
  • Modest elusiveness in his run after catch.

Tyrice Knight LB , UTEP

3-year starter at multiple schools with good instincts against the run, coverage is a work in progress.
Needs the right fit to learn better techniques to make the roster.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 6

Overview

Durable three-year starter with loads of tackle production on his résumé. Knight plays a floating, freestyling brand of football from the second level, looking for opportunities to knife in and make plays. While he racks up tackles, he fails to play within defensive structure full-time and will lose run fits and overflow action outside the tackle box. He has average speed and below-average man cover talent. His size and production will be looked upon favorably, but he might not play with the instincts needed to handle what he will see from NFL offenses.

Strengths

  • Tackle monster who piled up stop after stop for three straight seasons.
  • Allows his blocking keys to take him to the action.
  • Dives into gaps to end the run.
  • Unlocks and unloads from his hips as a wrap-up tackler in the hole.
  • Adequate open-field athlete for spot drop-coverage duties.

Weaknesses

  • Needs to improve his blocking-scheme recognition.
  • Plays with too much guesswork pulling him out of position.
  • Below-average instincts and will lose track of play design.
  • Freestyler who will lose track of his run fits.
  • Fails to punch and control blocks before they control him.

With the 214th pick the Bengals select Tory Taylor P, Iowa.

Brad Robbins had the third lowest average by punters who played a full season in 2023. He also ranked in the bottom third in pinning returners inside their own 20. If Cincinnati wants to compete with the big boys in a highly competitive AFC, these stats need to improve.

Taylor became a folk hero in Iowa City for an offensively-challenged Hawkeyes squad with his ability to flip the field regularly with his booming kicks.

Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint WR, Georgia

Big and strong receiver, with good hands, needs to work on routes, a project for the end of the roster or practice squad

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Priority free agent

Overview

Long-limbed receiver who might not have the skill set or traits needed to uncover against NFL competition. Rosemy-Jacksaint played with improved ball skills in 2023, which allowed him to tap into his size and length for catch wins. He doesn't have the speed to separate, and his routes are way too labored and sloppy at this stage. While he has the ball skills to compete at the catch point, he will really need to add polish to his game in order to find himself in consideration as a productive pass catcher.

Strengths

  • Has good size with long arms and big hands.
  • Catch focus and hand-eye coordination help to avoid easy drops.
  • Contested-catch success was an example of improved ball skills.
  • Has leaping and length to stab throws over the top of opponents.
  • Makes an honest effort to land and sustain run blocks in space.

Weaknesses

  • Likely to struggle with clean releases against NFL press.
  • Lacks convincing deep speed to keep cornerbacks from sitting on route breaks.
  • Routes are disjointed and lack separation burst from breaks.
  • Drifts instead of sitting when working zone beaters underneath.

With the 216th pick the Cowboys select Delmar Glaze G, Maryland.

Dallas needs bodies for its offensive front and hope to have found a gem here near the end of the sixth round. Glaze started over 30 games between both tackle spots in the highly competitive B1G, but his physical traits will likely have him playing guard at the next level.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 5

Overview

Swing tackle prospect with some promising NFL traits but tape that comes up lacking against some of the better competition he faced. Glaze has started at both tackle spots but is inconsistent with his pass sets and change of direction. Rushers with speed can beat him to the top of the rush and cross his face for easy inside access once he starts oversetting. He has good hand strength and should improve in protection if he can use more direct, inside hands in his punch. He’s fairly fluid in space and fits the criteria of an inside/outside zone blocker with lead-pull potential. A move to guard might give him the best chance to become an NFL starter in the future.

Strengths

  • Wingspan covers nearly seven feet.
  • Strong hands allow him to stall out rusher when he sinks them in.
  • Works hand resets and unhinges lower half to find anchor.
  • Holds his post and works to drive vertically on double-teams.
  • Decent lateral quickness and can work up on combo blocks.
  • Continues working feet around the reach block to seal off the lane.

Weaknesses

  • Beaten frequently by inside moves due to chronic over-setting.
  • Will struggle to cut off edge speed at the top of the rush.
  • Lacks ideal core strength to neutralize opponents as a base blocker.
  • Lacks aggression into contact at times.

Matt Lee C, Miami

A 4 year starter who has a sturdy build with good hands, who needs to work on technique to be more powerful at attack. Good addition to the online room.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7

Overview

Lee's lack of mass and NFL size will be a stumbling block from a perception standpoint, but the tape doesn't lie when it comes to his talent in pass protection. Lee is a technician with good play strength whose anchor supersedes the number on the scale. He keeps his head on a swivel and was rarely beaten in 2023. He's not much of a knee-bender, so drive blocking attempts will stall out, creating lane closures inside. Lee is an average athlete with above-average core strength and protection technique, and he might be able to overcome concerns about his size once he makes it into a camp.

Strengths

  • Pass protection technique and success rate are above average.
  • Plays with inside hands and above-average core strength.
  • Absorbs contact and is rarely ever jolted off-balance.
  • Good job of resetting hands and opening ankles/hips to anchor.
  • Stays square and lands with decent pop in his gallop step in the run game.
  • Continues to move his feet to stay connected with a moving defender.

Weaknesses

  • Weighed in at just 288 pounds at the East-West Shrine Bowl.
  • Could struggle against bull rushers with plus length.
  • Fits up run blocks without much knee bend.
  • Can't generate the drive power to clear out traffic in the middle.
  • Has trouble locking in and landing on targets in space.

Illinois Football GIF by Fighting Illini Athletics

Julian Pearl OT, Illinois.

Baltimore brings in another big boy to compete for an o-line roster spot. Pearl is nimble but needs to improve his functional strength in order to make an NFL team.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 6

Overview

Pearl is still learning the position and appears to have room for physical growth, as well. The athletic pieces are in place, but he's lacking the functional upper-body strength to withstand NFL challenges, and that must be corrected before he's ready for any snaps. Pearl is an athletic move blocker capable of creating creases in space, but the pass protection needs a big upgrade for him to develop into an NFL swing tackle.

Strengths

  • Long frame with potential to get bigger and stronger.
  • Slides quickly in pass sets and operates with punch hands at the ready.
  • Uses 7-foot-1 wingspan to stuff long-arm rush attempts.
  • Plays with good lateral quickness and open-field agility.
  • Keeps digging out down blocks with good foot chop.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average play strength to press defenders out of his frame.
  • Needs to bring his feet with his hands at the top of the rush to protect the arc.
  • Anchor is likely to be an issue against NFL speed-to-power challenges.
  • Starts to reach and grab when he fails to trust his technique.
  • Must be careful not to overstride move blocks.

Brevyn Spann-Ford TE, Minnesota

Good hands, can get to contested balls, needs to work on a lot of areas to make roster

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 7/PFA

Overview

Big tight end with the frame of an in-line Y receiver but the playing style of a move tight end. Spann-Ford showed some improvement in his run blocks in 2023 but sustaining them and blocking with accuracy in space is still a work in progress. He’s a little heavy-legged on zone-beater routes underneath and lacks instincts to create separation against man. Spann-Ford struggled badly with drops and contested catches this past season, but teams might be intrigued by the potential matchup issues he could create as a big slot target.

Strengths

  • Creates size mismatch from the slot.
  • Able to take tighter turns getting into route breaks.
  • Maintains his best play speed inside the pattern.
  • Snap quickness to find lateral positioning as zone blocker.
  • Uses size to wash down second-level linebackers.

Weaknesses

  • Needs to become more physical as a point-of-attack blocker.
  • Induced into whiffs while attempting to make blocks in space.
  • Struggles to free himself from physical man coverage.
  • Plodding and gradual when sinking and opening into zone holes underneath.
  • The 2023 tape is filled with drops.

Eric Watts EDGE ,UConn

A guy who "looks" like a Pro edge needs to get coached up in the league as he has some flashes
that will get him drafted in later rounds

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 5-6

Overview

Watts is loaded with measurables that teams search for but still light on consistency and skill level as a three-down option. He will flash some edge when popping and pulling blocks or mixing it up with opponents, but he needs to become more proficient at beating blocks in front of him whether as a rusher or run defender. He’s high cut and plays a little too tall, which hurts his ability to impose his size and length with much-needed leverage. There might be upside to develop as a pass rusher, but it could come with even more weight on his frame and from an inside alignment. Watts’ traits will likely get him drafted but he might need a practice-squad year off the bat.

Strengths

  • Prototypical defensive end with ideal height, weight and length.
  • Rangy to spoil rush attempts crashing in from backside.
  • Improved stack-and-shed take-on technique later in season.
  • Length to create strip sacks when working around the arc.
  • Salty field demeanor shows up on tape.
  • Opportunity for NFL teams to weaponize traits into a pass rush.

Weaknesses

  • Pass rush is more snap-and-go than a conceived plan.
  • Rush lands down the middle, making it easier to stall him.
  • Hip tightness prevents a deep dip to leverage bull rush.
  • High center of gravity limits contact balance at point of attack.
  • Needs to play with better command in challenging run blocks.

With the 222nd pick the Commanders select Cedric Johnson Edge, Ole Miss.

Washington gets another body for camp to compete for an edge-rusher spot. CJ possesses the right traits and now must have them translate on the field. (He did rack up 19 sacks during his time in Oxford.)

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5

Overview

Johnson passes the eyeball test with flying colors, and there will be teams who gravitate toward his NFL body type and play strength. With that said, his tape fails to consistently hit the mark. He's strong at the point of attack and will set firm edges but needs to become more intent on ridding himself of blockers and making more plays. As a rusher, he has strong hands and some tools to work with, but he needs to develop go-to moves and counters and attack the pocket with greater urgency. Johnson has upside but might never be more than a solid edge backup if his rush doesn't improve.

Strengths

  • Built like an NFL edge, with broad shoulders and thickly muscled legs.
  • Sets firm edges with leveraged knee bend and powerful, jolting punch.
  • Can play through contact and maintain a steady base beneath him.
  • Lower-body power to sink and counteract redirect blocks as a rusher.
  • Has potential to become a much better bull rusher with work.

Weaknesses

  • One-speed pass rush lacks burst and creativity.
  • Struggles maintaining rush space, allowing tackles into his frame.
  • Doesn't activate hands frequently enough at the top of the rush.
  • Tends to attack blocks and stay engaged rather than making a tackle near him.
  • Read-and-react awareness falls below average.

1229326863.0.jpg

Travis Glover OT , Georgia St

Glover has risen up draft boards with impressive performances at the Hula Bowl and his pro day. Just started playing football as a junior in highschool so has room to develop. First thing coaches will notice is his size, listed at 6'6" 318 lbs.

Draft profile

Strengths: Glover’s game is built around his 6’6”, 317-pound frame which makes it extremely difficult for defenders to get around. Even when beat, his length, which features 34.75” arms, often helps him buy extra time in protection.
His size truly shows up in the run game as he plays with a mean demeanor to often bury those in his path. His length and grip strength again flash in this department to help open up rushing lanes

With the 224th pick the Bengals select:

200.gif

Darius Muasau LB, UCLA.

The Bengals could stand to add to their linebacking depth and here they grab the high-motor Bruin. Muasau has good instincts and is willing to hit anything that moves, but his technique will need shoring up in order to stick.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 6

Overview

Linebacker with muscular build and an unrelenting desire to chase after the football. Muasau plays with a phenomenal motor and has the instincts and recognition to get the jump on blocking schemes. He plays with good initial quickness but lacks extended pursuit speed in space. He will take shots downhill to spoil the action, but teams will have to live with missed tackles and inconsistent leverage in his pursuit. Muasau can handle some basic short-zone coverage but could get in trouble if the coverage expands into larger spaces. He has the potential to make the back end of a roster as a late-round pick or priority free-agent addition.

Strengths

  • Tremendously durable and productive as a tackler.
  • Coaches will love his instincts and play recognition.
  • Instantly flows to play direction, racing running backs to the lane.
  • Stout and powerful when challenging lead blocks in the hole.
  • Sticks his nose into the trash inside and roots out running backs.
  • Triggers quickly to smother leak-out backs after the catch.

Weaknesses

  • Has a hard time getting rid of climbing linemen in run game.
  • Overly eager and will run himself beyond cutback lanes.
  • Allows too many runners to escape from his clutches.
  • Below-average range as reactive tackler laterally.
  • Doesn't gain quick depth on spot drops and lacks man-cover speed

1749247871.0.jpg

AJ Barner TE , Michigan

Chargers might have a keeper drop into the 7th round. Barner has the frame, good hands and will mix it up, although lacks elite athleticism. Needs to work on route and mehanics, but should be TE2 when camp opens.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5

Overview

In-line tight end who continues improving as a run blocker but is unlikely to offer much as a pass catcher. He was a captain at Indiana before transferring to Michigan, and scouts say he attacks practices and weight training with a single-minded obsession to get better and compete. He's technically sound in the early stages of the run block but needs to improve with his positioning to create better lanes for the runner. He can handle some pass protection but needs to keep improving. Barner's role might be a little limited as a blocking Y tight end with below-average pass-catching traits, but he should earn playing time in the future.

Strengths

  • Dots defender's frame with crisp under-hook punch.
  • Timing and athleticism to succeed with combo blocks.
  • Improved with foot chop and block finishing as run blocker.
  • Took time, but showed vast improvement in pass pro.
  • Provides quarterback a big target as zone-beater.
  • Smart scrambler to uncover for moving quarterback.

Weaknesses

  • Will base up the block rather than work it left or right.
  • Hasn't learned to reset his hands for improved sustain.
  • Inconsistent locating his landmarks as zone blocker.
  • Heavy feet with limited range of influence as pass catcher.
  • Average success rate on contested catches.
