It would take 500 years for a teacher to make what Cam Newton will make in a year. (A little less for Ryan Tannehill)

It would take 45 years for a teacher just to make what Muschamp is making as an unsuccessful head coach back to DC ....

And to make this a Noles football thread, it would take 125 years for a teacher to make what Jimbo makes in a year. At least Jimbo mentors our youth, gives them a pretty decent career path, morals and values and a family.

And for those of you who say what's the point? The point is this is all going downhill pretty quickly. I mean when you dont even have to win anymore to get a huge contract, what's the point? I feel like these guys are getting paid huge money to just stay out of trouble, be .500 and do some community outreach. Just boggles my mind.

Good luck trying to get ticket prices, memorabilia and apparel to come down. It's only the beginning.

Go ahead, rip it apart. Go Noles.

Why hate? It doesn't affect you. If that is what someone thinks he is worth than that is what he is worth. Teachers know what they get paid when entering the workforce. They don't bring in millions of dollars.

With that said, his career is at best 15 years.

One could argue that if teachers were paid more, we would attract better talent to the profession thereby producing better students and leaders and as a result a more productive and innovative workforce ... And BILLIONS OR TRILLIONS MORE over the span of just a few years.

It does affect us. The salary cap for each team is growing and when a regular ol QB who has done virtually nothing for a team gets rewarded like this, it means its setting a bar. It means tv, merchandise, ticket prices are all on the rise and where do you think that money comes from? Us, the fan. That's why Im shocked. Im not "hating."

And they are only paying him that because they have it. They have it because of tv contracts. Tv is paid for by us fans. Not owners. Stadiums are paid for by us, the fans.

When I can't go to a football game for less than a $100, there's something wrong. When I cant buy a polo for less than $70, there's something wrong. And when I can't watch a game on t.v. because of blackouts, there's something wrong. At least they are lifting that soon.

This is America, regardless of what you say, the fact is that it is always performance based. Cam Newton has performed well enough that Carolina felt he was "worth" that amount. Same goes for Miami and Tannehill. Muschump is gone for a reason, he didn't perform to standards and now is back to being a DC, and making less money.

The point is that these guys didn't just get handed millions of dollars for no reason, and if they slack off they will lose it. This is true in any profession and IMO that is how all employment compensation should be structured, capitalism not socialism man!

If they are going downhill so quickly they will be replaced so quickly.

It's the Diamond/Water paradox. Even though water is obviously important to human activity (life cannot exist without water), the price of water is relatively low. Alternatively, diamonds are clearly much less important to human existence, but the price of diamonds is substantially higher. In other words, the utility obtained from water is obviously very great, while the utility obtained from diamonds is substantially less. However, because it is so plentiful, the marginal utility of water is relatively low. An extra ounce of water provides very little additional satisfaction. Diamonds, are less plentiful, and their marginal utility is relatively high.

You, as a teacher, have marginal utility. Cam Newton does not. That's why he makes more than you. No need to be upset about it.

Youre right Richard and I know supply and demand. 6'6" 235 lb QB's dont grow on trees and Cam's arrow does appear to be pointing up and I'm also a huge fan of capitalism and America and prosperity but this is getting ridiculous.

Here's another comparison. It costs $20 to feed, house and cloth a kid in Africa for a month. That means you could feed, cloth and give a home to a million kids in Africa for the amount Cam Newton will make in a year. Does that seem fair? I loooove football and the NFL and our American way but it just seems its getting out of hand. I make good money too so this is not about the haves and have nots.

I remember when a gallon of gas was less than a dollar.

Yes noles517! You are exactly right! I am really glad you brought this up. When teachers; those who are in charge of growing our youth mentally and morally, are that marginal compared to a guy who throws a football to another guy (and not marginally better than his peers), there's something wrong.

I have three kids here in the US, the only way we could make it through one day on $20 is Ramen Noodles and pitch a tent in the neighbors yard...

You misunderstand the definition of Marginal in the economic context. It's not what you think it means. What do you teach? Because I'm concerned for our youth.

As this debate has no place on the TC (a place for FSU sport discussion) I would suggest, Mods, that this thread be moved to the locker room where I might "teach" JBartek some things (pun intended). Thanks in advance, mods.

lol another good point about gas Richard. I get inflation, I get its a 3% annual raise on average. This is exactly my point. Cam Newton hasnt done what Brees, Rodgers or Flacco have done (win a super bowl) and he is rewarded with a contract that WAS given to winners of the big game. That's why Im shocked and genuinely worried where this is all going.

This argument, coming from a teacher, is great. Teachers are undeservedly retained/promoted all the time because of duration, tenure, etc. Not because of merit. Pot calling kettle black, IMHO.

As long as people are willing to attend games and buy concessions and products and watch the games on TV even with increased prices, it will continue to happen. Get a bunch of people to stop watching and stop attending games and stop buying NFL merchandise and you will see them lower prices.

Except in California. Everything costs more there. ;)

So don't be a teacher....

Exactly, there are 32 starting NFL QB's in the entire world........there are millions of teachers.....simple supply and demand

This is one of the more laughable teacher arguments I have ever heard.

What would really upset me is if Cam got a $20mn contract to be a teacher.

"OK kids, get your laptops.... What do you mean they're missing?"

jbartek, i agree with point you're trying to make - though i maybe the only one.

dollars being paid to a variety of folks (actors, athletes, kim k, many ceos) are just absurd, and while the market can and does bare it out since the companies paying them are not going out of business en masse, that still shouldn't stop us from doing a reality check once in a while and asking ourselves, "hey does this make sense?"

for the free reign free market crowd out there, do understand that there are a LOT of things the free market might bare that are not allowed because it's been determined to be a detriment to the general well-being of society.

jbartek also brought up some player contracts booming at a rate that far exceeds inflation, another valid point - but for the most part I chalk that up to dumbass GMs and owners - it's a shame we don't have a relegation system like the EPL where idiotic owners can watch as they piddle their teams into a secondary league where their franchise value goes to crap and no one gives a crap about their team.

Teacher should've spent more time in the weight room & less in the library.

I have taught my kids a lot, so I am a teacher. But I am not paid for them; I have to pay for them. Like it or not, teachers are a dime a dozen.
