The next Sears?

put all of the capital into the Tandy computer stuff
Damn man, Tandy, that's a name I haven't thought of in years. Them along with Texas Instruments and Commodore were the big guys in the 80's, then poof, they gone.

Texas Instrument is every where in my field but I can't tell if people just still have their old calculators from college days. Those things last forever. I have 3 graphing calculators and all of them are still monsters after nearly 20 years.

they have actually made more money since he died, although their stock is tanking today.

This is w-o-w.

"Shares of Apple are off $3.22, or 2.7%, to $115.23 in afternoon trading Tuesday - meaning they've fallen more than 14% since hitting their high of $134.54 on April 28. Given the massive size of Apple's market value - this sell off is enormous in that it has wiped out $113 billion in paper wealth. The sell off essentially erases more than the entire market value of corporate giants including Nike (NKE) at $98 billion or McDonald's (MCD) at $95 million, separately."

I know people from college who worked at the Radio Shack HQ in Fort Worth. They all took off for greener pastures before the company tanked. Their corporate culture supposedly sucked and everyone there knew the place was on its last legs.

espin exec came out and said they plan on offering a free standing espin product in the next 5-10 years, decoupled from cable subscriptions.

but to your point, cable/sat companies have huge lobbies and dump millions into making sure laws are such that they are protected from real competition. it'll be tough to crack legislated grip they have on anyone who seeks to consume anything on the on tv or the internet. they'll fight and bribe this to their death.

That worked really well with the ESPN Phone from a decade ago. Wow, that failed horribly.

Carvel

It's getting harder and harder to find a Cookie Puss and Fudgie the Whale.

Add my vote to McDonalds. Way too much competition; dated product; snob factor (the walmart of fast food) ....not sure if they can reinvent themselves.

It is so discouraging to have those phone books at my front door every 6 months. I know there are plenty of folks out there that don't have smart phones, and if I wasn't lazy right now ("working") I'd find that stat of how many households in America have internet/hi speed internet. Seems like a giant waste of money and resources to continue to print and distribute phone books.

Hotel chains started removing them from hotel rooms and they noticed a large drop in business traveler clients. The questioned their clients and they found that they preferred the phone book bc they could search for escort services discretely and not be recorded on a smart phone search history or a work computer search history. They are now back in most business traveler hotels.

As long as there are still 4-10 yr old boys and girls and fat poors in Gainesville that want their mcnuggets and french fries, there will be Mcd's

That stuff is logged?

I was going to, but figured that was a forgone conclusion. The last time I went into one was to get my contact data switched over to a new phone due to a broken screen. They said that it was impossible, they needed the screen to be operational and I was SOL. Well I go home and jump on the laptop, google search, find Samsung's KIES program and transfer all my data over in less than 15 minutes. This is from knowing nothing at all about transferring to getting it done in 15 mins, and these guys are supposed to be the experts, psshh.

Their hdmi, audio, cat5, coax cables are pure crap and I can go to HD or online and find better, cheaper equivalents. There is one 10 mins away from here next to a Walmart and both times I've been in there in the last year, I was the only customer, with 2 sales associates acting like I'm their savior when walking through the door.
ha! those programs have been around since the days of the moto razr flip phones. I used to use them all the time. Then I imported the contacts into Outlook and I should never hopefully have to transfer contacts again.

would like to see a link for that. its inevitable, but they'll do it kicking and screaming. it will prevent another must-take network like the SECN. ESPN is also in litigation with Verizon over pared down packages.

radio shak - they are already 86.

motorola- funny you mention that Google took the best parts and sold the rest to nokia. Nokia was then bought by Microsoft.

the republican party is another one that could disappear.

mathis' post about bestbuy was pretty interesting, didn't know that but smart approach to changing consumer behavior - hopefully that buys them a few years. i actually go out of my way to buy crap there b/c i just like having them around - sorta how people opted for mom/pops while bigboxes were moving into town... bigbox retail has become 2015's mom and pop.

and totally agree on your last point re: the GOP haha

the company was split in two - motorola mobility, and motorola solutions. Google bought mobility. solutions is still around.

Probably done to distance themselves from the dying segment. I made fun of said dude (who's relatively high up in their food chain, basically their hatchet man) for selling pagers and he went off on a rant about how they've dominated the market share in the past five years in various spytech (mainly surveillance and communications) and have done well in pushing forward an agenda in the public space to push for increased body cameras and surveillance equipment ON cops. Don't think all of the media push on civilian killings came from nowhere, Leos have been killing innocents since before there WAS such a thing. That push came from big biz, that push for body cams means billions of taxpayers dollars re routed to companies like Mototrolla.

Microsoft bought the phone part of Nokia. They still have their maps service (about to sell to Damlier iirc) and their networking. They are still dabbling with devices, too, as they just unveiled plans for a VR camera. They have also said they will re-enter the phone market whenever their non-compete with MS is over.

I don't see movie theaters going away. Still a lot to be said for seeing a movie on the big screen, especially the blockbusters.

So if people are spending less time going to the mall, movies, sporting events, bookstore, walmart, target, etc...

Where are people going more? Restaurants, fitness, vacation, bars, parks?? I have no idea what you humans are doing all day!

It's just MORE proof Idiocracy is not a movie but a prophecy.

I found it funny you had Taco Bell in your sig thanks to this movie and Demolition Man.

Wasn't there something about Burker King being huge in Europe, and them having a guerrilla campaign in the U.S. (Random spots of the king at sporting events) in an effort to bring them back here?

Radio

Rock bands
Manuel Driving
Vinyl is making a comeback of sorts. Or did you mean songs grouped together as an album regardless of the medium?

Manual driving could be truly going away. The google car keeps getting in accidents and none of them are its fault. It will take some time to get past the fear of being out of control, though.

A lot of newer, premium-ish, cars already have lane assist that keeps you in your lane, hands-free. Also, distance control that controls the accelerator to keep you a driver specified distance from the car in front of you and park assist that automatically parallel parks for you. Most of the features of a self driving vehicle are already on the road, it's just a matter of integrating everything.

Also, a road with all self driven cars or all human driven cars is much safer than one that's 50/50. If I were an auto company, I'd be trying to partner (google/apple) or buy as many companies in the self-driving tech space as possible.

In a world of self-driving electric vehicles, traffic and emissions will be greatly reduced.

Songs grouped together in a collection to describe a mood or time in a persons/generations moment of life.

The art of an album aka, collection of songs. This also goes along with rock bands.

I think music is going to explode over the next 10-20 years with a collection of one hit wonders that will in itself be like one massive album. But instead of bands being responsible to create, it will be solo artist collaborating as whole to define a generation.

For an example, when I want to reminisce that's my high school days, I can pop in sublime or an 311 album. The next generation won't do that...they will filter the playlist they want to listen to by year and use that to take them back to that moment in time.

I know that's deep...but music is much easier to make and take to market with the technology and Internet that is available now...which is probably a good thing. Think of all the Kurt Cobains of the world that were never discovered. Now they can be.

Are they going to ban motorcycles? Plus, a lot of people like to drive. It will be interesting.

This thread made has me thinking of this scene from season 2 of Silicon Valley....one of my favorite scenes of the season.

So you're saying the next generation will pioneer what I'll call a digital "mixtape".
Because that's already happened, years ago. If I want to think about college (late 90s), I can either pop in a mix tape, burned mix CD, or a spotify playlist I put together.

This isn't necessarily a revolutionary thing, unless I'm misunderstanding you.

I'm going to say Sprint. And in a bigger sense, the entire contract postpaid model of mobile. I think bring your own device is the future. I know Verizon is still the gold standard or whatever, but I think Verizon and Sprint are going to struggle without quality MVNOs.

While it's just a portion of a big company, Bonefish Grill is going to have to make massive changes to survive.

Really? Every Bonefish I've been to is jammed every night

they're certainly not in trouble like Sears & the others mentioned in this thread, but their same store sales have not been good for the last few quarters (and were terrible in the most recent quarter released). I'd imagine they will get things ironed out (they really need to because Bloomin Brands is very much counting on that line to be their growth engine over the next 5+ years).
