Welcome to The War Room. I'll begin this session with the ground rules. Everything that is reported in the War Room must stay in the War Room. That's the way this deal works. Sometimes the info is sensitive enough that it simply doesn't need to be passed outside the Tribal Council. This is a special feature for subscribers only. The reason why it is posted on the premium board is because it's the only way to ensure that the info stays is exclusive to Seminole Nation. That means not to post on the Rivals national message board or any message board outside of the Tribal Council. This will only work if everyone helps make it work.

Additional Note: Everything noted in this War Room comes from a reliable source but keep in mind that if we had it confirmed or if we had people go on the record it would be reported on our front page and not confined to the Tribal Council message board. That being said, what's in this War Room is more than just a rumor but it's not quite solid enough to be reported as fact. However, because we want to let our readers know what we are hearing we want to pass it along. Just keep in mind that we aren't trying to make a name for ourselves like the dozens of bloggers and Twitter folks that float every crazy rumor that comes around.FSU and the SEC
A lot of you may have heard about what Chip Brown of OrangeBloods.com said about Florida State and the SEC. We heard a similar story recently and actually compared notes with Chip before he made his post.

To review, we've heard that Alabama is interested in getting Florida State into the SEC and has been for a while. Alabama never tried to push the issue because it's generally accepted that Florida and a couple of its silent partners had enough votes to keep FSU out. However, that may no longer be the case with the addition of Missouri and Texas A&M, and that there just might be enough votes to get FSU into the conference now (if it's actually pushed).

Keep in mind this was just somebody inside Alabama speaking out loud. It's jumping the gun to even say there is preliminary consideration for FSU coming to the SEC. I have no idea if there's any immediate plan to try to push the issue within the conference. Also, the situation with Maryland and the conference exit fee could have some impact were this ever to become a real possibility. FSU will look a lot more appealing with a $20-25 million exit fee versus $50 million.

Surprisingly the other school mentioned as the top pick to come into the SEC with FSU wasn't Clemson but Georgia Tech. This is apparently because of Tech's location in Atlanta, a huge TV market.Filling in for Maryland in the ACC
No surprise at all but I've heard the two schools being considered to replace Maryland in the ACC are Connecticut and Louisville. There are conflicting reports on which school is the most likely to get the nod but Louisville has actively reached out to the ACC to express its interest.

What the ACC ultimately decides could have a huge impact on the rest of the conference. There is a very strong sentiment among the football powers (FSU, Miami, Clemson, Va. Tech) to bring in a school that is strong in that sport and not another northern school that is known primarily for basketball.

This is especially the case for Clemson.

You may recall that ACC Commissioner John Swofford met with the Clemson Board of Trustees back in July at their request. I was told by a source at Clemson that Swofford was informed in no uncertain terms by the BOT at this meeting that the next time the ACC brings in a school it better be one with a strong football program. The not so subtle hint was that Swofford better not add another northern football weakling (UConn) or Clemson would start to look for another conference.

If the ACC does add UConn and not Louisville I suspect the football schools within the ACC will become more aggressive in looking to align with another conference.Additional ACC attrition
Maryland may not be the last school to leave the ACC for the Big 10. I've been hearing rumblings from multiple sources that the Big 10 is looking two add two more schools. Surprisingly Boston College and Georgia Tech are the two schools on the top of the list. And this may happen within the next couple weeks.

The Big 10 is looking to continue its expansion east to get a larger market share for its Big 10 TV Network. In addition to academics, Boston College and Georgia Tech appeal to the Big 10 because they are in huge TV markets - Boston and Atlanta. This is the same reason why schools like Maryland and Rutgers will join the Big 10 despite the fact that the aren't exactly juggernauts when it comes to major sports.

If this does go down within the next couple weeks expect the dominoes to fall quickly. I would expect schools like Florida State and Clemson to move quickly and do what it takes to get off the sinking ship that is the ACC.FSU and the Big 12
If the very slight opening for the SEC doesn't take hold, all signs point to the Big 12 welcoming in Florida State with open arms. As I've noted before, FSU and Georgia Tech would be the conference's first choice but if the Yellow Jackets head to the Big 10 Clemson wouldn't be a bad consolation prize.

Last spring the Big 12 had some interest in expansion but wasn't in a hurry and concentrated its efforts on Notre Dame. The Big 12 will be watching closely to see happens with Maryland's exit fee and the possibility of the ACC losing a couple more schools. If things play out as it looks, I suspect the Big 12 will come calling to FSU pretty soon thereafter.

Keep in mind with conference expansion/realignment to expect the unexpected. None of this is set in stone and there are other scenarios out there that nobody outside of the conference decision makers has even considered. But one thing seems certain change is inevitable. It's just a matter of when it happens.

Gene - thanks for the great update. Up until I read it, I had assumed that the ACC would find a way out of this situation I am much less sure of it now. With all the messages flying around the country, you were still able to throw in there a journalistic bombshell - that the Big Ten was most interested in GT and BC. And that the SEC was more interested in GT than Clemson. Wow. Someone had predicted two years ago that the SEC would go after GT to keep the Big Ten out of the South. Who knows - we shall see.
We are in the anything can happen phase I guess. Thanks again!

This is good news. If we can get into the SEC I'm assuming it would be the east. That would be a brutal but enticing schedule!!!!

Why would Bama want to add FSU to the SEC?

Everything seems to point to the ACC crumbling, the BIG 10 reaching out east, and the BIG 12 grabbing FSU and Clemson. I can't say the BIG 12 is all that exciting but it sure beats the dumpster fire that is the ACC.

    Wow!!!!
    Thanks for the update Gene!
I love Florida State and I am convinced our athletic future is dependent upon us exiting the ACC.
I am a little surprised the B1G doesn't make an academic exception and make a run at us.
They already did so with Nebraska.

I would love it if we could get to the SEC, but it will be very hard. I also like that Clemson is against bringing in a northern school, but why is FSU not against bringing in a school like UCONN? We are the one school that should oppose this.

Because Saban looks out for his boys, and he knows we wouldn't be in the west. And Alabama FSU could become an insane rivalry, we already steal recruits from each other

Alabama would love to have another SEC school in Florida to compete with UF for recruits. But Bama had wanted FSU in the SEC for a long time. They are trying to preserve an east-west balance that makes sense which allows them to play their traditional rivals. If the SEC goes after GT to keep out the Big Ten, then the "deal" among UF, USC and UGA - if it ever existed - is shot to hell. FSU is more valuable than Clemson under any analysis.

Am I correct that FSU needs ten votes to get in the SEC? If so even if FL, GA and SC voted against admission that would still leave eleven who voted yes.

Although I'd love for FSU to join the SEC, I'm not sure the move makes more sense for the league than adding a combination of UNC/DUKE/NCST/VATECH. UNC and DUKE would explode their basketball profile while also adding a new market geographically. Does that rumor have any legs to it?

If Bama can get us into the SEC than they are more powerful than I thought. Can you imagine us in the SEC with the added hate from schools knowing Bama influenced the move? Oh, please let this be real life!

I'd be happy with the Big 12. You'd have teams like Oklahoma, Ok. State, K. State, Texas, Baylor, T-Tech, West Virginia, FSU, and Clemson. That's a strong conference to me. I'd love to see us there if the SEC doesn't work out. We certainly will no longer be penalized with a conference schedule including many of those opponents.

I pray that the Big 10 takes someone else soon and Swofford adds UConn. I just don't see how we can consistently have 4-5 ranked teams on our schedule by staying in the ACC. Plus it isn't right for us to carry the decision makers monetary wise.

I was also wondering how many votes are needed for approval. I can see the $EC members being tired of gator arrogance as well as us.

And if an offer does come, and Barron TRIES to turn it down, I can see him run out of Tally after an acceptance.

Even if it happens fast, we'll still have that crappy schedule next year...earliest we'd be in the SEC or Big XII would be fall of 2014 most likely...

Maybe I'm foolish or short sighted but I really would like to be in the SEC.

I trust our President and BOT to make the right decisions.

Also, i wouldn't be waiting for the SEC to come calling. We still don't have the votes. If this thing is going to work, it's going to be a move to the Big 12 with several of our southern friends.

This is great water cooler talk, but the SEC, in my opinion, is not going to allow FSU into the conference. The Big 12 other than money, is not that appealing to me at least. They do stress football which is good for FSU but traveling all over the southwest for games? Hard to envision unless FSU buys its' own jet or something.

Is this a 2013 or 2014 deal with the schedule? It feels great to potentially be wanted. I was afraid our admin was going to leave us with our thumbs up our butts...which still could happen if the BOT won't step-up.

Pretty amazing update..Maryland leaving The ACC was a clear indicator to most that The ACC has zero future in the world of college football..they look to be like The Big East has been the past decade..the place other conferences come to poach teams

Dot has got you all stirred up with false hopes now. It's good for business I guess. Moving to the SEC is a long shot, and the Big 12 never invited us before to have us turn them down.

At least this update is realistic and doesn't have Duke and UNC going to the SEC and Clemson and UVA going to the Big 10.

I don't know why people are surprised at Bama's power. They wanted FSU in 1991 (as did Auburn and LSU and Vandy) and the SEC champ game was supposed to be in Birmingham (which it was for several years). FSU would be supported by those three schools as well as UGA (they would have to if they let in GT) and Tenn. (Dave Hart is AD)
People keep saying that the SEC should go after new markets - but the SEC was told by CBS months ago when they tried to get more money for adding Missouri and the Aggies that matchups matter more than the location. So who thinks NCState would provide more viewers playing UGA than FSU?
Well, it's all speculation at this point. And certain actions will occur which will cause reactions - and that is when predictabitlity is impossible. Could be fun (if it ends well)

A lot of posters here who think they know everything are going to owe a lot of owning up after calling several of us idiots, clueless, etc for saying that we can get out of this conference and still get in the sec or big 12. I know who you are and you know who are but I won't mention names. Hopefully it happens sooner than later. As I have been saying for months it's time to leave this dog shit conference! Very curious as to who is going to step up for FSU and make it happen. I think Jimbo needs to make some comments at some point if no one else will. It woul be his biggest way to get the fan base back on his side because right now he has a lot of haters including me.

My hunch is that Bama would take a look at FSU and have to think that it's entry into the SEC-East along with our recruiting strength against UGA and uf would make it likely that we would take top recruits they might get, thinning out the pool among the three of us and making their path clearer to take the SEC crown on a regular basis. It weakens those two schools in their eyes on an overall basis and makes us more likely to vote with Bama on conference issues.

We've never had bad relations with Tuscaloosa, going back to the days of Coach Pete and Vaughn Mancha, a legendary AD at FSU and a former Alabama All-American. Just a smidge of history there, but those folks are hide bound when it comes to tradition.

Of course, this is all speculation as to why on my part. If anyone pooh-poohs it with other factoids I've not considered, no skin off my nose.

Hoping these rumors of FSU going to the SEC or Big 12 are true. No one can say with a straight face that being in the ACC doesn't cost us a few recruits every year. These recruits either prefer to play in a better conference or won't even consider FSU because of the affilation with the ACC. A move to either conference means we could boast a much tougher schedule and entice many of those who want to not only play for a top power, but also play against the best talent out there. A win-win for us if we go to either conference, in my opinion. Either way, we need to leave the sinking ship that is the ACC.

I enjoyed the read and the notes from Jimbo's presser yesterday certainly fit the possible opportunities. Go Noles!

    Gene,

Any thoughts or ideas about the rumors concerning UNC and Duke looking at the SEC? I've been hearing since the PAC12 made their play for a 16 team super conference that UNC, UVa and UMd were the most attractive teams from the ACC due to the TV markets they bring similiar to the B1G looking at BC and GT. This seems like the ACC's thoughts in adding BC, Cuse, and Pitt for the TV markets not their FB prowess.

I've read several places the B1G would look at UNC and UVa to go with UMd as both I believe are AAU members which also make them attractive to the SEC. I don't care where we go just do whats best for FSU and the ACC seems to be slipping into Big East irrelevance.
