Images of fans not wearing masks at FSU football home opener draws criticism
Jim Henry
Tallahassee Democrat

Doak Campbell Stadium was at limited capacity Saturday for Florida State’s football game against Georgia Tech because of COVID-19 safety protocols.

However, images of many in the crowd of 17,538 not wearing masks as required has led to criticism across social media regarding the school’s ability to enforce the policy.

Georgia Tech rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat FSU 16-13 in the teams’ nationally-televised opener on ABC.

While the defeat ruined coach Mike Norvell’s debut, others were upset that many fans appeared not to adhere to wearing masks while in their seats.

It wasn’t the look college administrators and politicians probably wanted to see as the deadly coronavirus pandemic continues to disrupt lives. Several college football games have also been canceled because of COVID-19 outbreaks.

"We were disappointed with some fans, particularly some student fans, at the Georgia Tech football game who did not comply with our policies regarding social distancing and wearing masks while in their seats," FSU Athletic Director David Coburn said Sunday in a statement to the Democrat.

"There was ample room for all fans to remain safely distanced. We have three weeks until our next home game, and we will re-double our efforts to both inform our patrons and improve compliance with the new rules.”

My fiance and I repped the COVID for 32301 during August. After my experience and the lingering after effects I suggest wearing a mask. It's not bright to catch this virus. It sucks waaaaay worse than the FLU.

Who cares? If you’re not overweight and/or have underlying conditions, it’s basically a common cold. If you fit into those categories, stay at home. Don’t ruin it for everyone else.

I am neither fat nor have underlying conditions and COVID nailed me. Also, by your line of thought, healthy people are allowed to catch it, spread it, and then suffer from it. They then get to possibly expose others whom you say should stay home. There are major logistical gaps in that line of thinking. What if a person has to be on-site to work? What if a symptom-free carrier brings it to work. The scenarios feel endless as this thing is easy to catch and spread. It's also a bear to deal with once you have it.

For an 85 yo woman with lot of health issues who attends our church it was no more than a cold. For my 31 yo former student in great health it has destroyed his life. Went in the hospital on July 4th and is still there. Has coded 4 times and the Drs have told the family he has reached the point where they feel he will survive but he will have a very limited quality of life and will probably be on O2 for the remainder of his life. Tough news for a welder just starting his career. So Noleindixe consider yourself as one of the lucky ones.
