Delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ryder Cup returns this week at Wisconsin’s Whistling Straits, the scenic Pete Dye design on the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s the 43rd playing of the team competition between the United States and Europe.
The U.S. Team is led by Captain Steve Stricker, who will helm his squad in his home state. The U.S. looks to avenge a 17 ½ -10 ½ loss to Europe three years ago in Paris. Three-time major winner Padraig Harrington is Europe’s captain this year.
U.S. ROSTER: Collin Morikawa (Rookie), Dustin Johnson (5th Ryder Cup), Bryson DeChambeau (2nd), Brooks Koepka (3rd), Justin Thomas (2nd), Patrick Cantlay (Rookie), Tony Finau (2nd), Xander Schauffele (Rookie), Jordan Spieth (4th), Harris English (Rookie), Daniel Berger (Rookie), Scottie Scheffler (Rookie).
EUROPE ROSTER: Jon Rahm (2nd), Tommy Fleetwood (2nd), Tyrrell Hatton (2nd), Bernd Wiesberger (Rookie), Rory McIlroy (6th), Viktor Hovland (Rookie), Paul Casey (5th), Matthew Fitzpatrick (2nd), Lee Westwood (11th), Shane Lowry (Rookie), Sergio Garcia (10th), Ian Poulter (7th).
STORYLINES: On paper, the U.S. Team is the favorite – its average world ranking is 9, while Europe’s is 30 -- but Captain Steve Stricker is hoping a return to the United States and the firmly pro-American crowd will help his squad hoist the trophy at the end of the week. Team USA has won just two Ryder Cups in the last 20 years and both (2008, 2016) were home games… This will be the first Ryder Cup since 1993 without Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods, although Mickelson is one of Stricker’s vice captains… It’s setting up as a battle between youth and experience, as the U.S. Team is sending six rookies to Whistling Straits, while Europe boasts Ryder Cup veterans in Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and captain’s picks Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter. Garcia has earned the most points of anyone in the history of the Ryder Cup and is looking to add to his total. The average age of the U.S. Team is 29.1, while Europe’s is 34.6… While there were a few health questions surrounding the game’s top guys recently, they seemed to be answered. World No. 1 Jon Rahm battled a stomach bug before missing the cut at the season-opening Fortinet Championship. Brooks Koepka withdrew from the TOUR Championship after hurting his arm on a tree root, but confirmed to Golfweek that he is good to go. A back injury caused The Open champion Collin Morikawa to struggle in the FedExCup Playoffs, as well… Will previous experience at Whistling Straits be a factor? The last major contested at the course was the 2015 PGA Championship, where five Americans finished inside the top 20 (led by Jordan Spieth, who was runner-up). There was just one European (Rory McIlroy) who finished inside the top 20 (although McIlroy did finish just one shot out of a playoff in the 2010 edition)… There hasn’t been a ‘close’ Ryder Cup in any of the last three editions. Will this be the year where it comes down to the end? Europe won by seven points in 2018, while the U.S. won by six in 2016. Europe won by five in 2014. In 2012, Europe triumphed by a single point after the ‘Miracle at Medinah,’ coming back from a 10-6 deficit in the final day.

COURSE: Whistling Straits (Straits), par 71, 7,390 yards (yardage subject to change). The Pete and Alice Dye masterpiece on the shores of Lake Michigan was inspired by the dramatic links of Ireland and boasts rugged, wind-swept terrain. It hosted the PGA Championship in 2004, 2010, and 2015 plus the U.S. Senior Open in 2007.
RYDER CUP RECORD: United States leads 26-14-2. However, Europe holds a 11-8-1 edge since the old Great Britain & Ireland team was expanded to include the entire continent of Europe.
LAST TIME: Led by Francesco Molinari’s 5-0-0 record, Europe defeated the U.S., 17 ½ -10 ½ and regained the Ryder Cup. The American squad got off to a fabulous start at Le Golf National in France – winning the opening session, 3-1. The U.S. was swept in the afternoon of the first day, however, and then lost the following session, 3-1. It went into Sunday’s singles down 10-6, and despite winning 2 ½ of the first three points, Europe was just too strong and had too big a lead to overcome. Europe won the Sunday singles 7 ½ - 4 ½ . Sergio Garcia’s singles win made him the all-time points leader in the Ryder Cup, while Molinari, winner of that year’s Open Championship, became the first European to earn the maximum five points at a Ryder Cup.

G&G glasses

If we began this season saying it is Year 1 for Norvell and judging by the blowouts from last season. He is showing improvement. Yes we are 0-4 but other than Wake. We have been a play or two away from winning. Just last season we were wanting closer games. Now we get closer games and ppl act like they can't see improvements. The team is still young and with a few more playmakers maybe next season is where we see the turnaround. Since this is Year 1 of a true off-season and the improvement of playing with effort should help lead to learning how to win going thru next off-season.

Roster flipping

Flipping a roster is hard, let alone in a pandemic. But one place Norvell has done a great job is in the RB room. Remember we made a bowl game in 2019?! We played 2 guys — Sheffield & Ward. Both actually played well considering everything. But Norvell built that room almost instantly, adding Corbin, Webb, Toalfili, Wren, & Jakhi. Lost Webb & got DJ. And of course Ward is from the Taggart days.

RB’s the most impressive roster flip in my opinion. But other segments have seen flips. QB, 3 of the 4 guys are his. Besides Pokey & Helton, the entire WR core is Norvell’s. Besides Camm & Rector, I think the TE’s are all Norvell guys. OL is split; DLT, Gibbons, & R. Scott are Norvell’s, but the rest of the starters and contributors (Baveon, Smith, Washington, B. Scott) are Taggart’s & Jimbo’s guys.

DE, 2 starters & 1 key backup are Norvell’s, other backups are Taggart’s. DT is a mix, LB is mostly Taggart’s group (Lundy is the main Norvell player), CB’s are a mix & S is mostly Taggart guys with 1 or 2 Norvell guys.

We need to see more flipping of the roster and certainly hit on a better percentage of transfers. Besides RB & DE, though, we haven’t been incredibly successful with roster management.

The Great Corey Clark

Thank you for asking the tough question and you alone may have just saved the upcoming recruiting class. Norvell’s response was exactly what I have been waiting to hear from him. Tired of all the coach speak and that was an impassioned and animated response that recruits and fans can latch onto. Well done Corey!! I think Norvell will look back at that moment and will personally thank you.

WR's

We know what we have with some of these guys-

Parchment is supposed to be better than he is, but...Kansas.
Wilson is undersized and average.
Helton is really undersized, but quick.

But where are the other older guys?
Where is Jordan Young? Bryan Robinson? Poitier- is he that raw?

McClain will be a good player with more experience. I think Williamson will too. Burrell is injured. BUT those guys are very young. We really are missing Destyn Hill.

10:50 — During one-on-one drills, we saw some really impressive catches by Parchment, Poitier and Wilson.

Brendan Gant did a good job of ripping the ball after a receiver made a catch, and Norvell really was excited about it.

Quashon Fuller, Robert Cooper and Marcus Cushnie have all had nice moments.

——-

10 — They did segment work outside for a bit and then ran a couple series of 11-on-11.

Milton had a nice series. He hit Treshaun Ward with a short pass for a huge gain, then he hit McClain for about a 20-yarder. Both runs on that series got stuffed by the defense.

Chubba’s series got off to a tough start. One run got stuffed and then he threw a pass to Parchnent, but it got blown up by Shyheim Brown. DJ Williams then saved the day with a nice long run.

They ran one play from goal line, and Corbin plunged in for the score.

9:20 -- FSU practicing in full pads, but there are a bunch of guys in green non-contact jerseys. That's not all that unusual this time of year, as everybody is nursing something, but it's a good bit more than usual.

During the two-minute drill inside the IPF, Milton's series was OK. He hit a couple of short passes and they had a couple of decent runs. Nothing spectacular. Then Milton took a coverage sack on a third down ... Norvell was really ticked at a receiver after the play. Not sure what he did wrong, but it apparently doomed the play.

Chubba also had a series and hit his only pass, a quick throw to Treshaun Ward. Ward later broke off a long touchdown run.

Soccer coach Mark Krikorian is out watching practice, which he does from time to time. Always good to see him. Great guy and obviously an incredible coach.

We'll have more in a bit.

Good morning!

Heading out to practice. Will have updates beginning around 9:30 am.

Miracles - TV Ratings and USC

"Total viewing of all NFL and CFB through last night’s MNF game is up 58% over last year and 4% over 2019. TV usage in general down double-digits over the last two years."

"CFB TV ratings update: two more games topped the seven million viewer mark, bringing the three-week total to five. Last season, it took until mid-October before a single game topped the six million viewer mark."

Compelling live sports moves the TV ratings needle like nothing else in this day and time...

Big media companies like Disney, Fox, Comcast, Amazon, Apple, as well as the Sports Gambling sites are going "all-in" on college football. For college football to maximize its revenues though, it must arrange the best and biggest matchups through conference realignment. ESPN and the SEC are gong to continue to expand to grab the biggest piece of an ever increasing pie. I am hearing USC will soon be contacted through back channels by the SEC (they have already been informally asked by the B1G to join them). USC can decide which way expansion goes next with ESPN or FOX and they will be allowed to bring three of their PAC 12 friends with them. "The Alliance" is only a temporary placeholder until the B1G and FOX renegotiate a new TV contract, which could include additional new B1G members that move the needle. It is a battle between ESPN and FOX right now to make the next big move in realignment.

I remain confident in what I have posted about a new Tier 1 college football division coming in 2025. As most of you know by now, I have spent the majority of my career in the "media" business. Just sharing what I can. Again, I have no desire to argue with fellow Seminoles and everyone is free to believe what they want.

For me, seeing all this play out is even more fascinating than the actual games. There will soon be brighter days ahead for FSU despite its on-field issues.
