Are you Buying or Selling?

I'm buying. No way this staff calls another game like JSU. I believe ND and FSU are better than this past week's hangover games on a short week. I'm buying that there are leaders and players that want to ball. I'm buying that this young staff is capable of listening and learning. No more gimmicks, no more wildcat, no more garbage play-calling and switching QBs.

God help us if I'm wrong.

Unlikely Reaction

Calm! That was my demeanor after the loss, and I historically lose it after a Florida St. loss. This demeanor trend started early last year and has continued with the two latest losses. I actually am able to watch the games now without such of an emotional rollercoaster. Now, I realize this is a true indicator of just how far Florida St. football has fallen. I do know however, that old me will return if Florida St. ever returns to the elite level! FACT! 🙈

Truth: We're not as good as we were vs ND and not as bad as we were last nite

In hindsight, I've needed to remind myself: this is still a rebuilding year.

The players played lights out and up to their maximum capabilities vs the Irish last week.

Play well and mentally focused and play the BEST game u can, and yes, we are a very VERY GOOD TEAM.

We're obviously not there to do that week in and week out. Yet.

They weren't consistently good as they can be, and last night proved that.

Obviously, being a team of kids, the team was not mentally prepared yesterday.

A short week? Resting on laurels? Feeling over confident? Who knows.

But they aren't as bad as last night. Not by a long shot. No friggin way.

The ND game proves that.

Too many mistakes yesterday. Penalties. Drops. Mental errors. And yes, bad play calls from the coaches.

So many chances to put the nail in the coffin in the 4th quarter and they couldn't do it.

It IS rock bottom, but I'm just not wired to give up on these guys.

Honestly, think of ten plays last night, that go the other way, and that hail Mary doesn't happen

It doesn't sound like the players are giving up, why should we?

Arent we all fans?

Stat Bomb – Pro Football Focus grades recap (FSU-Jax State)

Here’s a short rundown of the PFF grades from the FSU-Jacksonville State game. PFF does not allow us us post grades for all the players, so we just cover the high and lowlights. But if you have a question about a specific player, just ask and I’ll be happy to provide that info.

Overall Team Grades:

Top Mark: Florida State did not surrender a sack Saturday night and posted an extremely high team pass-blocking grade of 93.1. That incredible considering the changes on the OL during the game and the fact that FSU threw for just 133 yards. The last time FSU had a pass-blocking grade of 90 or better was way back in 2014 in the game vs. Miami (93.2).

Low Mark: Run blocking was again lousy with FSU coming in with a failing mark of 49.3. The Seminoles did run for 202 yards but were stuffed several times in short-yardage situations.

Odd: With five total sacks, you would think the pass rush grade would have been higher, but it was just 64.5. Led by six pressures from Jermaine Johnson. FSU finished with 21 total pressures.

Passing:

McKenzie Milton – 65.4 passing grade / Strangely his grade was just 59.9 when kept clean but 74.7 when under pressure

Rushing:

Jashaun Corbin – 77.4 rush grade (78.0 was the highest offensive grade on team) / 81 yards after contact.

Treshaun Ward – 76.7 rush grade

Lawrance Toafili – 56.6 rush grade

Receiving:

It wasn’t a great day for the receiving corps. Wyatt Rector finished as the top pass-catcher but had just two targets (83.2 receiving grade). Camren McDonald was the top-graded starter with an unimpressive 64.7 receiving mark with three catches on six targets.

Keyshawn Helton had arguably this worst outing as a Seminole coming in with a 46.6 receiving grade, and a team-low 46.1 offensive grade on 43 snaps. Of course, he had a huge drop on the opening drive and finished with zero catches on three targets.

Blocking:

As noted above, pass-blocking was impressive. Four starters finished with marks above 80 -- Dillan Gibbons (86.8), Devontay Love-Taylor (86.4), Darius Washington (84.4) and Robert Scott (81.1). Only one offensive lineman, Deonte Lucas (69.9), finished with a grade below 74.

The line surrendered no sacks and gave up just three pressures on 42 quarterback drop-backs.

Run-blocking was awful for the second straight game despite decent rush numbers. Every lineman that saw action finished with mediocre marks with everyone in the 50s. Baveon Johnson had the top grade (59.9) and Darius Washinton with the low grade (50.8).

Another huge negative for the OL was being responsible for seven of FSU’s 11 penalties. Lucas led the way with three.

Defense:

Not surprisingly, Jermaine Johnson was tops among starters with a defensive grade of 81.1. He also led the defense with six quarterback pressures. Other defensive starters or major contributors that finished with a grade of 70 or higher were Amari Gainer (76.2), Robert Cooper (75.8), Jammie Robinson (71.0), Renardo Green (70.9) and Fabian Lovett (70.8).

Three defensive backs brought up the rear with very disappointing marks -- Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (60.4), Jarrian Jones (53.9), and Meiko Dotson (50.9). Dotson really struggled in coverage (47.9). Green (72.1) and Robinson (69.7) were the top two defensive back in coverage. Brownlee should have had a higher coverage grade (59.1) considering he gave up just three catches on 10 targets, but per PFF he was responsible for the 59-yard TD pass on the final play that lost the game.

The top tacker on the team was Kalen DeLoach (82.9), who finished with seven tackles. The bottom mark came from Brownlee (22.2).

The Sum of All Fears

Is the point we arrived at when Jax State crossed the goal line after we never thought we could lose, even on the final drive itself. There were probably 100 things we could have done differently where if just 1 had been done, we would have won. We flirted with losing to FCS team in the past, but we finally were bitten and now here we are 0-2 with a loss to an FCS team for the first time in school history, about 6-7 more probable losses, and what will be a recruiting killer. This could have all been prevented by 1 tackle, one play call, one catch, one less penalty…..this is The Sum of All Fears.

Also getting walked off from the other team’s 40 makes losing to an FCS team feel like 1,000 times worse. I still can’t believe that happened, absolutely stunning.

"What We Have Here Is A Failure To Communicate."

That happens when the fans and posters actually sound like they would have made a better coaching decision than the coaches!

Ever find yourself screaming and yelling at the TV prior to a play about where a player or players should be lined up? I had to quit watching games with a guy (former player) that got so worked up I thought he was going to have a heart attack! LOL! True story!

I've flipped to Warchant from 247 after 14 years. Am I past my prime as a poster? It's likely, so I don't bring as much to the table as I once did. I'm 40 now, and recruiting doesn't do it for me anymore, but high quality writing, an off-topic board, and I like the fan engagement platform that's being built here.

Anyways, happy to be here and looking forward to a season that literally can't get worse...right?

Recap/quotes from Mike Norvell's coaches show (9/13): McDonald, Thomsen

Next up is tight ends coach and deputy HC Chris Thomsen.

“There’s so many things that our offense demands that our tight ends do.” Blocking on the perimeter and the backfield. Said Camm has done a great job of absorbing the information. Praised him off the field too.

Said he probably knows Norvell as well as anyone on the staff. Said when he got the job it was a no-brainer to join the staff. “The investment in the student-athlete that he makes is what made me want to join him.”

Said player’s have to bring their own energy on the road. “Playing a day game is really good, you don’t have to sit around all day long and wait for the game to get there.”

Thomsen spoke about the draw of FSU: “Always following coach Bowden and the program. Just the attraction of experiencing Doak.”

Since he was a coach over Norvell as a player, said he would've liked to have made him run stadium steps, but never got the chance. (If this sounds random, he was asked this): "He was one of those guys that never was late for anything, didn't miss class, he wasn't a guy you had to discipline. I never got a chance to do that to him."

That is all from tonight everyone.

---------------------------

Next up is tight end Camm McDonald.

McDonald said the FSU logo recruits for itself. “ I’ve been watching them since I was young, I watched them win a national championship so it was really a no-brainer.”

Said his house was only 25 minutes away from the Rose Bowl. “That Seminole magic stuck with me the rest of my life.”

Said a lot of times the tight end is the smallest player on the line in the box, so they have to be the most fundamentally sound. Credited Coach Thomsen.

On crowded tight end room, said that shows how valued the position is within the offense.

Said TE Wyatt Rector “represents the room at a high level.”

Spoke about his charity Rise and Progress. “I’m not gonna say its for me, but its service to my heart as well, its fills me with so much joy and offers me fulfillment. I feel like that’s my purpose in life to serve God and serve others.”

------------------------------------------------------

We are live with Mr. Deckerhoff and Coach Norvell.

Norvell opening thoughts: “Disappointing outcome there Saturday night. A lot of things that showed up throughout the course of the game. Struggled to get going offensively, lacked explosiveness that had been evident the week prior." Said offense couldn’t move the ball downfield consistently, short yardage situations gotta capitalize.

Norvell all in all, thought the defense played well. Other than last two drives. “Heartbreaking loss.”

On both losses on final play of game: For us, its about how we finish…For us it has to be start to finish. We have to play at a higher level.”

Lack of explosive plays vs JSU: Said they didn’t capitalize on opportunities. Making sure that they finished. Explosive in run game is something they have to be.

Talked about both QB’s: “Both guys have diverse skill sets.” They have to give them time to push the ball down the field.

On TE’s, said it “was good to see them have some production.” Camm McDonald “has really grown and developed since they’ve been here. Developed as a run blocker.

11 penalties and 9 in second half: “Trusting the fundamentals, hands and feet in the moment.” Said a few of them were focus penalties. Said they are putting them behind the chains offensively. Officials are out on the field at practice and “that needs to translate onto the field.”

On defensive line and Jermaine Johnson: Norvell also mentioned additions of Keir Thomas and Marcus Cushnie. Growth of guys already here in Fabian Lovett, Dennis Briggs, and Robert Cooper. McLendon and Fuller. They are playing with confidence as a unit. They’ve taken ownership.

Said they have to find a way to make sure they’re moving the chains in short yardage situations.

On comments today in PC, focusing and finishing: “When you get to the moments in the game where the pressure mounts, and maybe it gets to you…We saw Saturday night guys almost tried to do too much. Played outside of themselves, and lose a sense of the details.” Said it is something that they have to continue to develop.

Said they went to work at practice. “Guys were flying around.”

Said there was a sense of urgency for what they need to do. “There’s nobody in our program right now that is very happy about where we are. Everybody is hurting, everybody is sick about some of the things that have happened up to this point. We can correct it. There are things that we absolutely are going to improve on.”

Said this team’s heart and character are going to show during challenging moments. Said this team “cares about each other, they care about their coaches.”

On Wake Forest: “Extremely well-coached.” Probably one of the most experienced teams in all of college football. Said special teams will play a key role in this game.

Said Wake’s fundamentals jump off the film, rarely do they beat themselves. Hartman can make every throw, is so in tuned to what he is being asked to do.

That's all from Norvell. Next up is tight end Camm McDonald. Norvell called McDonald "very impactful in what he does on the field but also what he does off the field."

On TEs coach Chris Thomsen, who coached OL at Central Arkansas from 2003-04: "He was a player's coach in regards to taking the time to invest in others."
