Time to learn & take action

Its like the movie just keeps repeating but gets worse each time. We hear the great coach speak and get optimism this time supported by great recruiting and a well played game against a top 10 team. Then the dumpster fire starts up again. Should we we as a fan base be surprised? I think we should not. This program is not our old program anymore and in its current state it will not be fixed or left for dead based on one game. Yet we all knee jerk. IE after a loss to ND this team can win 10 games!!! or after the worst loss in school history Fire Norvell!!! This team is not as good as it looked against ND or as bad as it looked against JSU. Here is what I see

Offense: QB situation is tough you have the bionic man in Milton trying to tap into what we he was 3 YEARS ago but equipped with a at best average receivers group. ( do we throw to our TE's?) Its like a rebuilt race car with a engine that sputters. Looks like it should go fast and does at times but cant be consistent. Then you have JT that can run great, improvise well, but can't make a throw consistently or see open receivers like Milton can. That said you do have several good running backs and a improved OL. We scored 28 with JT vs ND and not so much with MM and receivers that cant get open against JSU. Can we learn that as much as we want to see a high flying pass attack with MM that we don't have the weapons for it. We need to lead with the running game and use it to open up passing opportunities.

Defense: Improved vs last year but still needs work. That 4th quarter was like watching 2019 and 2020 again in one quarter. Bad play calls, lack of discipline, and poor effort in the 4th quarter. The players need to know that if they want to get to the NFL they will not be successful if they play like that. We need to see the defense have the effort they did for 3 quarters Saturday and against ND each week but they also need to improve each week. It does not matter who the opponent is the guys in the mirror are their most challenging opponent. Can they learn to stop the dumb penalties, stop dropping interceptions and make full effort on each play through 4 quarters.

Staff: Stop being in love with your analytics to the point that you loose perspective are just doing silly stuff. IE we were defending against the tie with 6 seconds left not worrying about that QB who just lead a 97 yard touch down drive. No way he can make a throw that would win the game. Or lets bring the house on 3rd and 17 against ND. Or even better lets get cute with the QB's at the start of the JSU game and get some stuff on film. Can we learn to please pick a QB and go with it and build a good game plan and use the other one for opportunistic plays.

Norvell: You have had tons of sound bites around climbing, accountability blah blah blah... We want to see you display the accountability not just talk about it and also just be quiet until you are winning games

Fan Base: We are still a team that can win 6 games and take a step. I hope we can all still rally behind this group and encourage them to take that step knowing there will be more pain before there is glory. I will be in the stadium Saturday against Wake yelling GO NOLES!

Feeling better about the defense

Adam Fuller was interviewed on Front Row Noles and I really liked what he had to say. A couple of highlights:

  • Difference between this year and last year is they know their guys, and they now have the right guys in the right spots. Especially in the defensive backfield where they have some depth. Said last year they just had to band aid it together and felt they had no choice but put guys in tough positions.
  • They have been able to install much more of their defense and guys understand their job.
  • Said that Lovett is in the best shape of his life and it shows. Cooper is very strong and making some plays, needs to be a little more consistent.
  • Leadership is beginning to emerge.

Treat the Wake Game Like...

Like a total business trip. The staff obviously treated the Jax St. game like a glorified scrimmage, and it backfired. Big time.

Pick one QB and stick with him. Give them a healthy dose of Corbin and Ward, like we did against Notre Dame.

Stop the run and pressure Wake's QB, like we did against Notre Dame.

Punt the ball when you're "supposed to", and win the field position battle.

I don't care if we beat Wake by a point, but need to stick with what we do well, line up and beat them. Tremendous effort. Every play.

Oh yeah, and less than 10 penalties would be good too. Big test this week, and something tells me they'll answer the call.

Need a Disciplinarian…

It’s literally that simple. Helton drops a pass that you couldn’t have handed to him any better, he gets another 2-3 deep balls called for him. Jones makes some godawful plays, they leave him out there. Lucas… Dotson… I mean the list goes on.

We need a coach that is yanking kids for their on the field performance and getting in their faces. A lot of this is an effort and enthusiasm issue. This team played with zero “want to” last night outside of #11.

Nobody responds to a putz. Need the fear of god in the kids, every damn play.

offense was the problem

so the offense had a bad night and in the 4th quarter the other team had 7 points .. the defense had played lights out

the offense had two main issues
1. drops - huge game changing drops .. big play and td drops
2 penalties that put is over and over 1st and 20 first and 15 and killed drives

our problems was not he defense
not the ol except penalties
not the MM - qb
not the rbs
not the running game

honestly if we cut the penalties in half we would be 2-0
if we caught the ball last night we win by 35

Open Letter to Norvell

Coach, this is going to be a long, difficult road. It's likely you knew that when you took this job, but now you know for sure. You've been successful in your prior jobs, and over time with your focus, energy and passion you'll be successful at FSU.

You inherited quite the situation here. You have a fan base that is used to winning, but players who are not. You are the 3rd HC in 4 years, and I'm sure it's proving difficult to get the players collectively focused on breaking habits and playing winning football. It's obvious many of the guys are playing hard and doing their best, but until that translates to the entire roster we are going to experience what we saw against Louisville and Pitt. Most of the upperclassmen are probably ready to move on with life, and it's hard to blame them.

Tune out the noise and keep focusing on the future. Those of us who have closely followed FSU over the past 4 years know that this will take time. I'm excited to see what you can do with a couple of full recruiting cycles and spring practices. I know you will work 24/7 to recruit football players who want to play winning football.

The thought of a quick turn-around was exciting, but we now know that isn't reality. We look forward to seeing improvement, even if it's not obvious each and every Saturday in the fall. We look forward to seeing a full team having fun playing football again. It will happen, and Go Noles.

Wake Up Warchant or Smash Talk?

and other podcast with Jeff, Corey and Ira. I notice viewers can send texts and questions during broadcasts, but how do you do that? Ditto broadcasts on You Tube? By the time I watch, it’s not live so assume it has to be during live recording. You also keep asking us to hit the like 👍 button, but again I don’t have that option during the podcast that has been posted on You Tube. Ditto taking phone calls and fielding questions. I’d like to participate.

Way too much emphasis on preseason hype in cfb........how it hurt this week

First, no excuse ever to lose that game. But, I think early in the season, the mental approach to each game is impacted way too much by how teams think they played based on misjudged competition. In our case, I was freaked out by ND almost losing to Toledo at home. They are not a top 10-15 team right now. Might be later in the year, but not know. Therefore, our players, coaches, fans, etc. had a false sense of security and our own hype of being back at the worst time. We lost focus, though we hung and could have beat a top 10 team, and it played a big role in the outcome. This seems obvious now, but it is not just FSU, it's happening across CFB in the first two weeks. We had no legitimate reason to just "show up" given the last few years, but it cost us and turned a massive positive in the public narrative to a national embarassment. I hope our coaches, players, fans take this and pull it forward for a long time that each game stands on its own and we are not at a point as a program to just show up.

Now I think we will bounce back and have a great game against Wake and win as the opposite will happen. They are favored, have only played cupcakes, and we will play mad. Take the points. It's all about mental psyche early in the year.

Just saw the telecast.

I hope our fans realize the quality leader we have in Mike Norvell. It shows up in everything we do. The way our team fights, the way our players support each other, the energy that is palpable throughout our program and fan base. It's Norvell.

I was in the stands Sunday night. Watching the telecast I found myself getting emotional because of the pride I was feeling for this university and our program. What a feeling. And this is just the beginning! Big things are ahead, Noles. We need to be all in, because our players and coaches are definitely all in!

Go Noles!

Still Riding with MN?

Thankfully, I was out camping in beautiful weather this weekend and I wasn’t able to see the dumpster fire that posters have been explaining the past couple of days.
This thread is geared toward the group in our fanbase that want MN to be judged with the same measure that was used on WT.
Simply put, I agree with you and your sentiment. Saturday’s loss is the worst we have ever had. It reminds me of 08’ when we almost lost the an FCS team, forgetting the game atm, and a couple of other times where we have come close to choking.
This loss is directly on MN and he took responsibility. He seemed extremely hurt and understands the position he has placed himself in. I don’t necessarily care how he feels per se, but it shows some sort of authenticity that the WT pressers didn’t show…
To get to the point, even though I am not completely sold on MN, I don’t think this loss is that monumental like it would have been a few years ago… We are all pretty much used to disappointment as fans of FSU football.
I know you will hate me reminding you all of this, but we don’t have the ability to get a replacement at this point. MN is here to stay. Attempt to focus your blame on coaching staff and less on the players. Attempt to forgive and make FSU football inviting to young recruits. Don’t forfeit your booster dollars. We don’t have a choice. We are trapped. The best we can do is sit around and watch mediocre football until the ship is turned around or until we can afford to find another coach. Either way, we are most likely stuck with MN for 5 years. Let’s just try to not be a toxic fanbase andhope for the best, while suspecting the worst.
Please find other hobbies and remain positive, as dark as these past 7 years have been.
Thanks

Go Noles

3 words on Travis

Stop. Just. Stop.

I get it, great teammate. Hell of a running threat but is just NOT a good QB.
Stats for the game
47% completion rate
39.9 QBR for the game
2/3 TD to INT ratio

Well you want to say well it was just a bad game
His career stats
52% completion rate
9/10 TD ratio

Not sure how anyone can think over the course of a season he is the answer. This really isnt a bash thread either. I actually like the guy. Seems like a great guy, teammates love him. positive attitude. At this point, he should be a change of pace type guy to come in for a series or 2 at QB and then have him run some other packages at other positions WR or RB or whatever.
I would love for him to 1 day become a great passer but not sure he ever can

How did Mullen do it?

Honest post. The chat on here was dumpster fire. Recruiting was a mess. Not a great coach. It felt like it would be a long time…. But he came in and they have been good and very good almost from day 1.

Meanwhile we cannot even progress. That “since 2013 post” sums it up. It is quickly becoming a decade. We have to wonder if we will be able to win every game except the ones we know we will lose. I sincerely think CMN will make things change, but I still wonder why it is baby or backward steps here and down south they made it happen fast.

Jax State is a MUST WIN

Listen…don’t act like we are too good to worry about Jax State and act like there is NO WAY we can lose. We all saw Samford, ULM, and first part of Jax State game last year. Truth is we have not been a good program for years now and every year we are optimistic just to be disappointed.

If we are being honest with ourselves the odds are we lose to Notre Dame Week 1. That means week 2 vs Jax State is truly a must win for Norvell if he plans on being here a while. Jax State shouldn’t beat us sure but they had the benefit of playing games in the fall and in the spring this year. That is a big advantage. Add in the pressure on Norvell and this team to win if they do end up losing to ND and anything could happen. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen but I’m also saying let’s not make the same mistake again like we did with Samford and ULM……this 1 game…more than ND…more than WF in week 3 could set this program back even more…..
