Churchill, Mullarkey named cross country All-Americans

FSU sports information:

Alyson Churchill and David Mullarkey captured All-America honors at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning at the Panorama Farms by finishing in the top 40 in their respective races.

Churchill placed 22nd in the women’s 6k with a time of 19:53.9, while Mullarkey placed 40th in the men’s 10k at 29:50.8.

Churchill’s finish was the highest for a Seminole since 2013 when Colleen Quigley crossed the line in sixth place. The Tallahassee native’s performance is among the top 16 in program history at the NCAA Championships.

Churchill ran every step of the race among the top 25 runners.

“That was a fantastic day for Aly,” FSU head women’s coach Cody Halsey said. “She was 79th at this meet last year and finished 57 spots higher today. We were really proud she went for it from the gun. We knew Aly was one of the best athletes in the NCAA and today she was able to showcase that on the largest stage. You can’t ask much more from your athlete, show up on the day and leave it all out there. This was the highest individual finish for Florida State in the last 10 years and that feels really good. We are excited about the future!”

In just his first NCAA Championships, Mullarkey becomes the 11th Seminole in program history to earn All-American honors in cross country.

The No. 26 men’s team finished in 27th place with a total of 620 points.

“It was a tough day for us,” FSU head men’s coach Bob Braman said. “We had two that were sick and it unplugged any chance of a top 20 finish. I am really proud of David. All-American in his first NCAA XC Championships. Overall, it was a great season for the men. We put ourselves back into the national picture in cross country.”

Cooper Schroeder followed Mullarkey in the 10K, crossing the line with a time of 30:51.8 in 163rd, followed by Matthew Neill in 132nd (31:12.4) and Abdirizak Ibrahim (31:49.6) in 203rd. Zach Cloud was the fifth and final scoring runner for FSU, placing 212st at 32:01.5. Ahmed Ibrahim clocked 32.14.2 for 216th.

FSU puts up Jordan Travis Heisman billboard near ESPN HQ

Ta'Niya Latson scores 35 points, helps FSU rally to edge Florida

Florida State stormed back in the fourth quarter for a big road win behind a career-high day from Ta’Niya Latson.

The sophomore guard scored 24 of her 35 points in the second half as the Seminoles defeated Florida 79-75 on Friday in Gainesville. Latson shot 8 of 10 from the floor and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line after halftime.

ESPN - Why Jimbo Fisher Was Fired

These quotes are impressively accurate. The exact same guy we had here. Didn't A&M know what they were getting?

"Fisher was fired Sunday morning late in his sixth season at Texas A&M with more than $76 million remaining on his fully guaranteed contract. He was undone by an offense -- his offense -- that didn't keep up with the trends in college football, ranking 101st nationally in scoring during a disastrous 5-7 season in 2022. He was undone by a stubbornness to change, waiting until Year 6 to even hire an offensive coordinator. He was undone, sources say, by his ego and his insistence on making each and every decision."

"Meanwhile, Fisher's singular focus on running his program his way didn't endear him to many people on campus. Fisher was the decision-maker on everything, and if you questioned why something was done a certain way, you were likely to be met with an angry response, sources said."

"In the end, the Aggies decided it was no longer worth throwing good money after bad. They decided it was worth $76 million to send Fisher out the door a day after a 41-point win."

Question: Has anyone ever been hated so much they were paid $76 million to leave?

Basketball FSU 68 the gatros 89 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

FSU 68 the gatros 89 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (and I mean ugly)

The Good

Just because there is something good in everything or so they say, Cameron Corhen and Jamir Watkins with decent offensive games. Corhen had a double double with 18 points and tied for game high honors with 10 rebounds, 9 of them on the offensive end. Watkins, on the strength of 7-11 (not to be confused with a certain convenience store) at the line scored 13. Near the end of the half Watkins had IMO the lone highlight for the 'Noles when he crashed down the lane, received the pass from Jalen Warley for the tomahawk slam. It was a real momentum builder as the basket closed the gap to within thirty, 50-22. WOO-HOO!!

Unbelievably in a game played so poorly in just about all aspects, the team only committed 10 turnovers.

Warley with 5 steals out of the team's total of 12.

At least the FSU women beat that OTHER team in their game played earlier at the O-Dome.

The Bad

With the lopsided loss, FSU ends its lengthy winning streak falling to 2-1.

Darin Green's streak of making at least one three pointer ends at 26 games after shooting 0-3 from the arc. It was a horrid night for the sharp shooter connecting on just 1 of 9 of his attempts.

And then there was rebounding or lack thereof. FSU was beaten badly on the boards by a 48-33 margin. The stunner in that is 17 of FSU's total were offensive boards (well, when you shoot 26% there are bound to be a lot of rebounds). The 'Noles managed just 17 second chance points however.

On the strength of those 12 steals, FSU forced 20 turnovers but could only score 12 points off the gatros' miscues.

The Ugly

Coming into the game, FSU had lost two straight to the gatros (their ...) aka crocs of XXVI. Make that three in a row. That was no way to celebrate the diamond anniversary meeting. That wasn't one step backwards. That was several steps.

That looked like a team that did not belong on the same floor. They looked rattled from the start. Not to pick on just him, but Baba Miller had one of his worst games unable to handle the gatros' bigs. No one appeared to handle the atmosphere well.

The silly fouls. I do not think I have ever seen a game where one team picked up four flagrant fouls. De'Ante Green was ejected for a flagrant two foul and Fletcher ejected as well for leaving the bench. I am not sure what that means for them as far as playing in the next game.

At least this time it wasn't the heartbreaker like last season when the 'Noles led by as many as 19, was up by 17 at the break, and ended up losing by 9. No, the slaughter was right from the beginning. Calculating time with holding the lead was rather easy to calculate.

As far as the first half is concerned, that was basketball???? Couldn't shoot. From anywhere . Couldn't defend. Tyrese Samuel had a field day in the first period often with no one around him as he dunked the ball. The back to back offensive fouls was a nice touch as well.

Shooting the ball. At least in the first period. The Seminoles shot a pathetic 26% from the floor. Included in that was a even more pathetic 1-9 from three point land. FSU did redeem itself somewhat shooting 46% in the second stanza mostly forgetting about shooting from distance.

When was it over? Some might say right after the tip off. Me, I would say after a layup by the gatros to make the score 29-8. It equaled the final margin of defeat which coincidentally was 21 points. Every thing else in between that layup and the final buzzer was just filler because the Seminoles did not have even an inkling of the look that this game would become competitive. Unless you call decreasing the deficit to just under 20 points which the 'Noles managed to do a couple of times in the second half.

In pre-game, Leonard Hamilton expressed his concern about Central Michigan shooting at a high percentage (52%) and how that needed to improve tonight. Unfortunately his concerns were justified as the gatros blistered the nets at a clip of 64% in the first half and finished the game at 52% (What a coincidence!!).

I am going to pin at least some of the blame on the TV announcers who said this should be a hard fought "fun game". Fun for who? Certainly not FSU.

The foul on Riley Kugal by Fletcher with .1 of a second left in the first period. Aside from Fletcher displaying horrible defense on that play by leaping at Kugal (you never should foul a jump shooter at the three point line), the refs taking nearly four minutes to decide whatever it was they were deciding .... which appeared to be nothing.

Up Next

FSU resumes the Sunshine Slam tournament when they take on UNLV at the Ocean Center on Monday in Daytona. Tip off is at 5:30 and to be broadcast on CBSSN. The Rebels are also 2-1 and on a two game winning streak. They currently have four players scoring in double figures and appear to have a balanced inside and outside scoring combination.

Football Recruiting Jeramiah Smith

I know we’d all love to pull him and our site has or is close to forecasting him to flip to us. The rivals guys just put out their projection that despite us being a real threat, they see no way he doesn’t sign with OSU unless a massive coaching change happens there. Do the Rivals guys have more intel than ours or are they just giving their 2 cents?

FSU volleyball defeats Chicago State

FSU sports information:

Florida State (21-8, 14-2) captured the win Friday evening defeating Chicago State (13-8), 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-16), continuing their six-match win streak.

FSU maintained control over Chicago State with a clean sweep. As a team, the Seminoles finished with a .253 hitting percentage and a .411 kill percentage.

Florida State started with a three-point lead to begin the match. It wasn't easy for the Noles, as the Cougars rallied after service errors by FSU and brought the score within three, (16-13). FSU would hold steady to capture the first set 25-22. Seminole outside hitter Audrey Koenig led the team in the first set with four kills, middle blockers Kiari Robey and Khori Louis contributed three kills each, and freshman Kenna Phelan had five assists.

The second set started off strong with a six point lead thanks to kills by freshman right-side hitter Maddie Snider and Louis. Even though FSU had an advantage in the set, Chicago State fought back to put the score within two (16-14). A kill by Koeing would extend the Noles’ lead and eventually go on close out the second set 25-21.

The final set was initially a close battle, but FSU went on to build their lead to 14-7. Florida State would not let up, taking the set 26-16.

Freshman Kyleene Filimaua contributed 11 digs and six assists. Koeing lead the team with 11 kills. Robey had seven kills with five blocks. Andjelija Draskovic and Phelan both finished with 14 assists.

Mike Norvell dismisses speculation, calls FSU 'special place'

Some thoughts from Norvell to the question about other jobs, and we've also added some context about Texas A&M's hiring window (very tight) as well as Norvell's contract:

Mike Norvell called Florida State a “special place” on Monday when asked about his name being thrown into the mix by national outlets for the opening at Texas A&M.

Norvell says he pays the discussion little attention but also pointed out that the conversation has turned 180 degrees — from one two years ago when he discussed with recruits the speculation from the outside of how long he would be FSU’s head coach to now those asking how long he would stay given the program’s recent success.

Special goal from Dudley lifts FSU soccer past Texas A&M, into Sweet 16

A remarkable individual goal from FSU freshman Jordynn Dudley was enough to lift the Seminoles past Texas A&M and into the Sweet 16.
