This has been a very good day in FSU history. FSU has never lost a game on this date.

Nugent won in '54 stomping Louisville led by Johnny Unitas, Peterson won in '65 and even Larry Jones won in '71. Bobby has won 5 times on this day including beating Ohio St in Columbus in '82, UNC in '04 and both national championship years shutting out GT 51-0 in '93 and blasting Duke in Jacksonville in '99.

One day on this date was special. It would be the the very first of many to come, many to come for the next 34 seasons.

On this day in 1976, Bobby Bowden recorded his first win as the head coach of Florida State. It was the home opener in his debut season with the Noles against Kansas State in front of a crowd of 30,353.

The Noles were already down 0-3 on the season, but each previous game had been on the road.

Being down 10-0 at the half, the Noles showed their Unconquered spirit they are famous for and held KSU scoreless in the 2nd half and put up 20 points of their own to pull out the victory 20-10. Jimmy Heggins, who would later return to FSU as an OL coach, anchored the defense with 21 total tackles in the game (16 solo) and grabbing an interception.

Quarterback Jimmy Black spearheaded the second half comeback. He tossed a 17 yard pass to tight end Ed Beckman that combined with Dave Cappelen's PAT knotted the score. After Cappelen hit a 41 yard field goal with 12:07 remaining, Black tossed a 26 yard TD pass to freshman Kurt Unglaub that gave FSU the lead. Cappelen also booted the second PAT.

The kicking game kept FSU in the game throughout. In addition to Cappelen's two field goals, head coach Bobby Bowden also pointed to the punting of junior Bill Duley as being a significant factor in the Seminole victory. Duley kicked five times for a 43.2 average. Three of those boots were returned for a total of two yards.

Florida State's passing attack accounted for 155 of the Seminoles' 343 yards of total offense. Black connected on six of 10 attempts and junior Clyde Walker had seven completions in 11 attempts. Beckman was their favorite target. He caught six for 95 yards.

This marked Bobby's 74th career win and would be the first of the 316 victories Bobby Bowden recorded wearing garnet and gold.

We often talk about the great coaches we've had at FSU and nearly all of them have found success on this day. Jimbo Fisher is no different.

Also on this date in 2010, Jimbo Fisher recorded his first victory on the road as FSU's head coach, beating Virginia 34-14 in Charlottesville.

The game marked the first time since 2004 the Noles scored at least 30 points 3 games in a row.

Jermaine Thomas rushed for a season high 122 yards on 16 carries and 2 touchdown's to give FSU their second (2-0) conference victory of the season.

Greg Reid recorded 2 interceptions that day to go along with his 5 tackles. Xavier Rhodes, Christain Jones, Nigel Bradham, Demonte McAllister, Markus White and Dan Hicks all recorded sacks (6) that day while Kendall Smith led the defense in tackles.
