FSU 70 Duke 88 The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
The Good
For nearly seventeen minutes, the very short handed Seminoles played Duke pretty evenly. After an initial 4:05 where the 'Noles were a bit out of sync forcing Leonard Hamilton to call his first timeout trailing 12-7, FSU regrouped and actually held a lead for a few minutes. With 3:25 left in the half, the 'Noles trailed by just one, 40-39. Even after Duke went on a 12-2 run to take and eleven point halftime lead, FSU managed to cut it to eight in the early minutes of period two.
Effort was worthy of an A. Just too many good players on the Blue Devils.
Player of the game. Jalen Warley who took over point guard duties. He had an impressive line of 15 points (a career high), 7 rebounds, and dished out 6 assists against just two turnovers. That against a team that is coached to force you into making mistakes. The FR held his own.
Honorable mention to Tanor Ngom with 11 points showing some strong moves in particular on pick and roll plays. Matthew Cleveland led the team with 16.
FSU shot the ball well. Although Hamilton was not 100% pleased with his team's offense (when is he ever?), the 'Noles were 50% from the floor operating fairly well in the half court. The 'Noles scored 44 points in the paint showing they were able to drive the ball on Duke. Unfortunately Duke was a tad more efficient from the arc, 11-28 compared to 6-19.
Plays of the game. Wyatt Wilkes knocking down a pass that was collected by Cam'Ron Fletcher who made a nice outlet pass up the floor to Cleveland for the layup and 20-16 FSU lead. Wilkes with the hustle to swat Wendell Moore's sure thing breakaway slam. Although Wilkes fouled on the play, Moore made just one of two FTs saving a point making Wilkes' sprinting back worth the effort. Warley zipping the ball from the baseline out to Wilkes who made a nice step to the side to avoid the defender and then knocked down the three, 40-39. Warley's dribble drive avoiding the defender attempting to block the shot. Cleveland with a nice reverse layup off a crisp pass from Wilkes out of the timeout, 12-9. Ngom's turnaround jumper banking it in, 16-15. Cleveland driving in from way outside to give FSU its first lead, 18-16, off the layup plus the foul. Warley's coast to coast layup pushing the ball up showing good speed, 48-41.
The Bad
14-12 overall, 7-9 ACC good for 9th place in league standings with FSU still stuck on just 2 wins in 24 tries against the Blue Devils.
Injuries strike again as RayQuan Evans was the latest player to go down with an injury. He suffered a shoulder injury when a Clemson player landed on him going for a loose ball. That makes all five regular starters to be out all at the same time. Has that ever happened to any other team? It made for Hamilton putting out his 10th different starting lineup of the season. Instead of the New Bloods, just call FSU the Black and Blue Bloods (credit to Gene Deckerhoff for that one).
John Butler was well rested for the second half as he took a seat just 1:16 into the game after picking up his second foul.
Back to back threes by John Baker fueling a 12-2 run giving Duke a 52-41 lead at the break. And once Duke gets a double digit lead, they rarely lose it.
Cleveland in the second period with some of the worst decisions a player could make. Such as launching a three from the left corner after Butler moved to the perimeter leaving no one under the board to get a possible rebound. Fouling when he was outnumbered 3-1 on the Duke fast break, 65-49. Being caught up in the air with nowhere to go with the ball other than to throw it to a Duke player and off to the races for another layup, 67-49. The shot clock down to three and instead of shooting the ball, he passes to Justin Lindner. The walk on recognized the time left and heaved the ball up. Unfortunately no rim and a shot clock violation.
The Ugly
Hamilton having to call time out at the 15:55 mark not waiting for the TV timeout as the start looked all to similar to the UNC game.
Memo to Tanor: The three point shot from out above the key is NOT your forte. That was evidenced by the ball not coming close to the rim.
And speaking of not hitting the rim, Cleveland with an air ball .... an air ball on a FT that wasn't even close to being online with the basket.
Rebounding. 41-23. Enough said.
I am assuming the $900 to $2,800 people paid to get a ticket to K's last two home games is worth it. But man, that is a chunk of change.
