cooking things on the grill?
I marinated boneless chicken breasts, cut them into good sized strips, and put them on the grill tonight. Despite limiting my fire to one half of the grill and putting the pieces on the edge of the fire, I had a hard time not burning them. They were still delicious, though.

My son is a wizard at grilling but I seem to be hit and miss regardless of what sort of meat I've got on the fire.

My salad was killer, though.

Yup. My ex wife once tried grilling chicken on the grill, and she was looking at the Celsius temp, not Fahrenheit. Talk about burnt! The chicken looked like it pissed off a Mexican drug cartel.

You might be surprised at how many men can't grill edible food--don't let them fool you. I know a guy that can't even light a gas grill and his wife did everything when we went to their house for steaks. We haven't been back to their house since. Of the cookouts I've been to where real food (not just burgers and dogs) is involved I'd say maybe 50% of the men could cook or smoke a good piece of meat.

I have been baking at a professional level for 2 decades...and yes, I can still grill, saute, braise, make soup, et. al. The one thing I have never gotten right is texas-style chili. Strange gap in my skill set.

This is true. However, the vast majority of even those men will not admit they can't grill.

Goldmom men did invent fire so it goes to reason grilling is a natural birth skill. Maybe it is not fair but women are also good at many things men aren't. Like cleaning, going to the grocery, making kids lunches, laundry etc.

Grilling takes practice. Especially if using charcoal, open flames do not act the same all the time. It changes with the temperature, the wind, the humdity, the the fuel you are using, what and how much you are cooking,, etc. There are a lot of variables. Men simply practice it more.

The comparison with baking above is spot on. Good bakers can pick up on the nuances in the dough or batter in the same way as a good griller with the flames. (Bakers also have a different mentality than cooks, but that is a different issue.) There is no natural advantage to men or women being bakers. Like grilling, it takes practice.

Not a huge fan of chicken on the grill though...if I'm doing chicken outside its on the smoker, thighs only, low and slow (Myron Mixon has a great smoker recipe using the large muffin pans)

Though the beer can chicken is always money on the grill (and you get to drink half a beer)

I'm with you with the exception of low and slow for chicken on the smoker. There is no internal connective tissue you're trying to dissolve so there's no benefit to low temp over a long period of time.

Ok. Now I'm with you. I'm usually closer to 300 degrees. I brine the chicken (thighs only too) overnight then dry, brush with oil and season. The skin is not soggy and the meat is juicy.

I marinated boneless chicken breasts, cut them into good sized strips, and put them on the grill tonight. Despite limiting my fire to one half of the grill and putting the pieces on the edge of the fire, I had a hard time not burning them. They were still delicious, though.

My son is a wizard at grilling but I seem to be hit and miss regardless of what sort of meat I've got on the fire.

My salad was killer, though.

Goldie, It has nothing to do with being a man or woman. It has to do with practice and more men have time on a grill than women. My wife is one of the best cooks I know, and she is absolutely the best baker I know. With that said, she is not good on the grill, and that has to do with she just doesn’t do it much.
