The No. 23 Florida State volleyball team (19-8, 11-6) rallied late to take down the No. 15 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (20-6, 12-5) in five sets (25-13, 15-25, 21-25, 26-24, 15-10) at Tully gymnasium on Friday night. The Noles snapped an eight-game losing streak against Georgia Tech and picked up their fourth top 25 win of the season.
The Noles started set one strong, jumping ahead 7-3 early. They maintained their momentum through every point, keeping at least a three point lead between them and the Yellow Jackets. The Noles used some great defense and a very efficient offensive attack to cruise to a 25-13 win in set one.
Set two came with early back and forth points. However, the Noles were left trailing 11-5 after some offensive runs by the Yellow Jackets. Despite defensive efforts from Johanna Sova late in the set, Georgia Tech went on to win 25-15.
The Noles got off to a good start in set three and jumped out to a 14-11 lead and eventually led 18-15, but Georgia Tech used a 10-2 run to finish the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Florida State jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Yellow Jackets used an 8-0 run to take a commanding 15-8 lead. Georgia Tech extended its lead to 17-10 before the Noles started to claw their way back as they cut the lead to one at 19-18. Georgia Tech maintained its lead and had a 23-22 lead. The Yellow Jackets looked to have match point, but the call of the ball being in was overturned to tie the match at 23. Georgia Tech secured the next point to get match point, but a kill from Khori Louis, an ace by Audrey Koenig and a hitting error gave the Noles the set and the momentum as they headed to the fifth set.
Set five was nothing short of a fight as the Noles jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but Georgia Tech continued to battle back to tie the set at nine. The set turned as the Koenig recorded a kill, and on the next play, the Noles used a phenomenal defensive effort to keep the play alive, and Taylor Head put down the kill to end the long rally to send Tully Gym into a frenzy forcing Georgia Tech to take a timeout. Head added another kill out of the timeout then a red card was given to Georgia Tech to give the Noles another point for a commanding 13-9 lead. Koenig added one final kill to give the Noles match point, and a setting error gave the Noles the upset.
Koenig recorded 18 kills for her school record-breaking 24th consecutive match with double digit kills while also adding 13 digs. Khori Louis got back on track with 15 kills on 26 attempts while also recording four blocks. Kenna Phelan recorded a career-high 30 assists for the Noles.
Head led the way with 23 digs and was one of four players to record double digit digs for the Noles. Joining Head was Koenig with 13 digs, and Loren Robertson and Emery Dupes with 11 digs.
The Noles will continue their weekend with a match against Clemson at home on Sunday for Senior Day. First serve is set for 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
