The Florida State volleyball team (2-1) dropped its first match of the season Sunday to Cincinnati Bearcats (1-2) in four sets (24-26, 23-25, 25-9, 23-25) at the Fifth Third Arena.

“Today was a disappointing loss for us. We had too many errors at the net that gave them some free points. It was a good first weekend, but we will need to clean some things up moving forward,” coach Chris Poole said.

In set one, the Seminoles trailed early, but used a 7-1 run to take a 22-19 lead. The Bearcats responded with a run of their own to take the first set. Audrey Rothman was strong for the Noles with five kills in the first set while Emma Clothier added three kills.

The second saw the Bearcats get out to another hot start in set two to build an eight-point lead. Down to set point, the Noles battled off five set points to cut lead to one, but the Bearcats were able to get the final point to put the Noles away.

The Noles bounced back by dominating the third set from start to finish. The Noles jumped out to an early lead then went on a 16-1 run to win the set 25-9.

The two teams contested a very tight fourth set with each team trading leads. The Noles were able to tie the set up at 20 thanks to back-to-back blocks, but the Bearcats scored three out of the next five points to hand the Noles its first loss of the season.

Rothman was a bright spot for the Noles, as the true freshman led all players with 16 kills while Emma Clothier added 10 kills.

The Noles will have their home opener on Wednesday against Florida A&M for the first game of the Seminole Volleyball Invitational. First sere is set for 6 p.m. inside Tully Gym.
