FSU volleyball plays at Omaha Invite

The Florida State volleyball team (6-1) will hit the road for the second time this season for the Omaha Invite in Omaha, Neb., where they will face Nebraska-Omaha (4-1) on Thursday and No. 17 Creighton (5-1) on Friday. Thursday’s match will begin at 7:30 p.m. with Friday’s match against Creighton beginning at 6 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live omavs.com. This will be the first time in program history that Seminoles have faced either of these teams.

The Noles are off to its best start since 2017 and will look to add to a four-game winning streak. At their home tournament, the Noles impressed with a 4-0 record while dropping just one set. The Noles offense has been impressive so far this season. As a team, the Noles are hitting .318 which leads the ACC and is eighth in the country. Leading that attack is sophomore Audrey Koenig who has a team-high 71 kills this season. Khori Louis is also off to a great start with 62 kills and a .463 hitting percentage that ranks 15th in the country.

Nole Notes

  • Head Coach Chris Poole is in his 15th season as the leader of the Seminoles.
  • The Noles are off to its best start since 2017.
  • A win against Nebraska-Omaha would put the Noles at 7-1 which would be its best start since the team started 24-0 in 2014.
  • This will be the first-ever meeting with both Creighton and Nebraska-Omaha.
  • Poole will be looking for his 32nd win over an AVCA Top 25 team against Creighton.
  • The Noles currently lead the ACC and are No. 8 in the country in hitting percentage (.318).
  • Khori Louis is second in the ACC and 15th in the nation in hitting percentage with a mark of .463.
  • The Noles went 4-0 at the Seminole Volleyball Invitational last week with wins over Florida A&M, James Madison, Yale and Austin Peay.
  • Audrey Koenig, Khori Louis and Emily Ryan were each named to the Seminole Volleyball Invitational All-Tournament Team.
  • Koenig had a career-high four aces against Yale.
  • Koenig also leads the team in kills with 71.
  • Audrey Rothman was named the ACC Freshman of the Week on Aug. 29.
  • Rothman comes to campus as one of the top recruits in school history. Rothman was named the USA Today Girls Volleyball Player of the Year and the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year.
  • Sophomore Khori Louis tied her career high with 15 kills against Dayton.
  • The Noles added four transfers to this year’s team: Andjelija Draskovic (UMBC), Emily Ryan (UCLA), Alejandra Perez (Stetson) and Melanie Cuervo (Lynn University).
  • Draskovic and Ryan have started every game for the Seminoles this year.
  • Draskovic leads the team in assists with 146 while Ryan leads the team in blocks with 35.
  • The Noles will play six opponents ranked in the AVCA Top 25 starting with No. 17 Creighton. The Noles will also play No. 16 Florida, No. 4 Louisville, No. 7 Pitt and No. 5 Georgia Tech twice.
Scouting the Mavericks

The Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks are 4-1 with wins over Winthrop, Sacred Heart, Wichita State and Northern Colorado. The Mavericks lone loss came to South Carolina in three sets. Matt Buttermore is in his fourth season at the helm and is coming off the best season in program history. The Mavericks won its first Summit League regular season title and returned four starters from that team that finished 20-10 and 16-2 in the Summit League. Sophomore Shayla McCormick leads the team with 86 kills and is averaging 4.30 kills per set which ranks 30th nationally. The Mavericks are also led by Marriah Buss who is coming off a career high 24 kills against Northern Colorado on Sept. 3.

Scouting the Bluejays

The Creighton Bluejays have become a consistent top 15 program under head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. The Bluejays ended their 2021 season 31-4 with a Big East Championship. The Bluejays lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to Ole Miss. The Bluejays are ranked 17th in the AVCA Top 25 and are off to a 5-1 start and are coming off wins against No. 25 USC and Northern Iowa and a loss to No. 14 Kentucky. The Bluejays are led by VolleyballMag.com National Freshman of the year, Big East Freshman of the Year and AVCA Third Team All-American Norah Sis. Sis leads the team with 90 kills and 4.09 kills per set which is ranked 45th in the nation. The Bluejays will be the first team who will match up with Noles in height as the Bluejays have eight athletes over 6-1.
