FSU volleyball plays host to FAMU

The Florida State volleyball team (2-1) is set to play four games this weekend at the Seminole Volleyball Invitational. The Noles will face Florida A&M (0-3) on Wednesday at 6 p.m., James Madison (3-0) on Thursday at 6 p.m., Yale (0-0) on Saturday at noon and Austin Peay (1-2) on Saturday at 5 p.m. All games will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra with Shawn Davison (Play-by-Play), former Seminole coach Cecile Renaud (Color) and Alex DeCapua (Sideline) on the call.

The Noles are coming off a 2-1 showing at the “Tribute to #10” tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Seminoles defeated Illinois State and Dayton in four sets while dropping the final match of the tournament to Cincinnati in four sets. The Noles will be facing three opponents for the first time this week in James Madison, Yale and Austin Peay. The Noles will meet the Florida A&M Rattlers for the 28th time on Wednesday night. The Noles own a 26-1 advantage with Florida A&M’s only win coming on Oct. 19, 1982.

The Noles are led by freshman Audrey Rothman. Rothman currently leads the team in kills (34), digs (30) and aces (6). Rothman was named the ACC Freshman of the Week on Monday by the conference.

Scouting the Rattlers

The Florida A&M Rattlers are coming off its first SWAC Championship in school history in 2021. The Rattlers are coached by Gokhan Yilmaz who is in his fifth season for the Rattler. The Rattlers opened the season with losses to NC State, Sam Houston and Kansas State at the Kansas State Tournament. Reigning SWAC Player of the Year Dominique Washinton led the way for the Rattlers with 36 kills in three matches. Brooke Lynn Watts, a transfer from Murray State, also added 17 kills for the Rattlers this past weekend.

Scouting the Dukes

The Dukes of James Madison are coming to Tallahassee 3-0 after sweeping its home tournament last weekend with wins over UAlbany, Robert Morris and Kent State. The Dukes were led by Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week Miette Veldam who tallied 53 kills in 12 sets over the weekend. The Dukes are coached by Lauren Steinbrecher who is entering her 13th season with the Dukes and boasts a 217-114 record. Thursday will be the first time that the Seminoles and the Dukes will play each other.

Scouting the Bulldogs

The Yale Bulldogs will open its season this weekend at the Seminole Volleyball Invitational. The Bulldogs will face Florida A&M and James Madison on Friday prior to its match with the Seminoles on Saturday. Coming off a 17-6 season, the Bulldogs were picked to finish third in the Ivy League. Head Coach Erin Appleman enters her 20th season with the Bulldogs and is one of the most successful coaches in Ivy League history. Appleman has led the Bulldogs to 10 Ivy League titles and seven NCAA Tournaments. Appleman returns her top hitter from the 2021 season in Bonnie Bostic. Bostic tallied 192 kills in the 69 sets for the Bulldogs.

Scouting the Governors

Austin Peay comes to the Seminole Volleyball Invitational 1-2 after a win against Louisiana Tech and losses to Clemson and Presbyterian at the Big Orange Bash in Clemson, S.C. The Governors are a balanced team with four athletes tallying over 20 kills in their three matches this past weekend. Leading the group was senior Mikayla Powell with 33 kills, 16 of which came against Louisiana Tech. The Governors are coached by Taylor Mott who enters her 10th season at the helm. Mott led the Governors to its second-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017.

Nole Notes

  • Head Coach Chris Poole is entering his 15th season as the leader of the Seminoles.
  • The Noles will look to extend its eight game winning streak in home openers.
  • The Seminoles return four starters and their starting libero from last year’s team that finished 20-10.
  • FSU returns 76 percent of its kill total from last year and 80 percent of its block total.
  • The Noles started the season 2-1 with wins over Illinois State and Dayton.
  • Freshman Audrey Rothman led all Noles with 34 kills, six ace serves and 30 digs in the first three matches.
  • Rothman was named the ACC Freshman of the Week on Monday.
  • Sophomore Khori Louis tied her career high with 15 kills against Dayton.
  • The Noles added four transfers to this year’s team: Andjelija Draskovic (UMBC), Emily Ryan (UCLA), Alejandra Perez (Stetson) and Melanie Cuervo (Lynn University).
  • Draskovic and Ryan each started the first three games for the Noles. Draskovic tallied 72 assists while Ryan recorded 26 kills and 12 blocks.
  • Clothier and Ryan each had 12 blocks over the weekend to lead the Noles.
  • Rothman comes to campus as one of the top recruits in school history. Rothman was named the USA Today Girls Volleyball Player of the Year and the Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year.
  • Wednesday’s match between the Seminoles and Florida A&M will be the first time the two Tallahassee teams will play since 2018. The Noles have dominated the series, 26-1, with the Rattlers only win coming on Oct. 19, 1982.
  • Florida State will have its first ever meeting with James Madison, Yale and Austin Peay.
  • The Noles will play six opponents ranked in the Preseason AVCA Top 25 including No. 17 Creighton, No. 13 Florida, No. 3 Louisville, No. 10 Pitt and No. 5 Georgia Tech twice.
