Grub Hub decided New Yorker's needed a break on their lunch so they offered $15 off of any order made in the New York City area between 11am and 2pm. Restaurants across the city were inundated to the tune of 6,000 orders a minute, which “absolutely blew away all expectations” said Christopher Krautler, a spokesperson for Grubhub.

The kicker is Grub Hub did warn restaurants about this but there was not way to anticipate the demand that was to come. In this debacle, everyone lost.

This is worse than a few years back when Oprah gave away a free KFC meal to the entire country. KFC's got so flooded with customers that they had to have everyone sign up for it, then you would get a date range where you could go and get it.

An email warning restaurants about this isnt the same as having prior discussions with participants and allowing those who wish to opt out. This is what caused the issue. Restaurants were not prepared for the influx of orders nor did Grub Hub really know or even predict how many there would be.
