Has there been a noticeable economic effect on the economy of Tallahassee with FSU going 0 for September???

people spend less money on football.. Once Fans are getting used to loser team, they would care less, watch less.... I still feel FSU need to make a changing the coaching staff....they need proven DC/OC

Lots of schools fill the stands during tough seasons
Yes but I live in Tallahassee and have season tickets and I feel like it is a chore to go to games. I don’t want to sit in blazing heat to watch us play (and lose to) bad ACC football teams. It not entertaining. Wish they were doing LSU in tally and Baton Rouge. Glad they are brining UGA and Bama here in the future. We need games like that

Im in Tallahassee as well and going to the games is more of a chore now, an obligation to the sunk cost of boosters and tickets. I can tell you the combination of COVID and FSU sucking has obviously had a bad effect on everything. In fact COVID has hidden FSU suck effect because there is an expectation of less numbers regardless of FSUs sucsess. The biggest thing FSU could do right now is hire a real big-time football AD.

To answer the OP’s question- it has to have had an effect. The stadium was around half full yesterday.

I also live in Tallahassee and, with 4 kids (3 in sports), it is a chore sometimes to make it to a game…especially knowing we’re probably going to lose..but there’s something to be said about loyalty…I’m sticking with these guys…and I’m not even an alum…

It's getting a lot more comfortable on the bandwagon these days. More and more room every week. :)

I’d imagine the economy will find a way to adapt without them.

Empty hotel rooms and low business traffic can't be good for the local economy......
Honestly, I couldn't care less about the City of Tallahassee economy. It's not like we get any "traffic support" on gamedays from the local police, and for 30+ years I was shaken down by opportunistic hoteliers. Maybe a nice "dip" will make them realize that they need to be more collaborative with FSU football and its fans. But probably not.

It's a big cruel world out there, and what comes around goes around.

Michigan, notre dame, Texas, quite a few actually. However with that being said I don’t really blame people for not going to games. Living in Clearwater it’s a all weekend affair to go to one. Florida states problem is there so far away from the metro areas of the state.
When I read you live in Clearwater (home of one of my favorite airports) it reminded me if flying into Tallahassee wasn't so expensive, it would create a positive impact to the local economy.

Drove over from Jax yesterday and breezed right in to Lot 5 about 2 hours before kickoff. Left after MM’s desperation attempt was picked off and made it to I-10 in minutes (unheard of prior to 2017).

I’m sure Covid + Poor product has had a substantial impact on the local community.

Do the math for a hypothetical family of 4:

*9 hour round trip drive.....how much is your time worth?
*leave work early on Friday; means you must later catch up
*$750 to $1,000 for hotel room (2 nights)
*$1,250 for 4 CC tickets (including pro rata booster donation at lowest possible level)
*$400+ for meals
*$100+ for booze
*$100+ for incidentals
*$100+ for gas

The population of people willing to CONSISTENTLY do that to watch a completely underwhelming product is pretty limited.

I live in Wakulla, so basically Tallahassee. I own a rental property in Tallahassee and work with 4 local retailers here. For my business I cover the entire state of Florida, so I've got a pretty good feel for what is going on in multiple market areas.

There are kind of two Tallahassees, the one that revolves around the university and the one that is a medium sized city with a lot going on unrelated to FSU. Many alums only see the FSU part, it’s all they knew when they were in school so they think that it is all there is to the city. Truth is, Tallahassee has not been just a college town for many years, it’s not Gainesville or Auburn. There are 300,000 people here, 90% of whom have no real economic ties to FSU football.

I can’t really speak to the FSU football related part of Tally, but the rest of the economy is booming. My retailers did well in 2020 and 2021 is even better so far. One of them, who has been in business since the 1970's is having a record year. I could sell our rental property next week for 60% more than I paid for it in 2017. There are quite a few new restaurants and stores opening up and unemployment seems very low. Lots of traffic. Lots of people are fleeing all the problems and hassles of South Florida and moving here (unfortunately) seeking better quality of life. The Tallahasee economy is just fine, outside of, perhaps, a few businesses around the stadium.

This. The truth is Federal Covid relief bailed out a lot of businesses that were struggling as a result of the Willie decline. It will be interesting (but not fun) to see what happens now with those. My understanding is that the hospitality sector is still hurting a bit, but thankfully many businesses were able to open back up while other states were still in lockdown, which somewhat hedged the football-related economic hit you'd expect from less people coming to the games. Tallahassee is currently undergoing an economic transition away from sleepy government/college town to a more populous and diverse city. There are both positives and negative aspects of that transition. Tallahassee is losing the southern charm (and natural environment) that many of us love, but is simultaneously less economically vulnerable.

Even when the team has disappointing results, I am still going to the games and supporting them. No, it has not had an effect on the economy. However, I have seen an expansion and what I would call the poor fans, fake fans, and superficial fans. Those have increased, perhaps even dramatically so.

I felt the same way about magic tickets in orlando. Sounds like going to games for you is a chore no matter if we are winning or losing. I actually enjoyed watching our kids fight back ( the beginning was depressing i agree ) .

I still drive over from Jax - or take the Jax Seminole bus sometimes. Hotel rates in Tally are more like hotel robbery.
I don't come over for every game because it's expensive and unless I'm meeting up with friends - my grown kids are involved elsewhere - I have no one to hang out with. I love Tally and all the growth, too.
That said, I'm still a Booster and season ticket holder and I love my Noles.

I'm not going to the game this weekend...got two tickets available in Sec. 35!

^^^^This. Waiting to turn on Tennessee Street after a game is insanity. Don't understand why the roads cannot be shut down and allow for stadium traffic to exit... as for the hotels.... two night minimum along with prices to get a hotel room that you don't need an asbestos suit to sleep in is nothing short of financial sodomy.

The entire Big Ten
Really? I would disagree. Indiana, Rutgers, Illinois, Purdue, Minnesota, Maryland, Northwestern hardly get close to filling their stadiums when they are good let alone when they are going through a rebuild. The top tier teams yes always fill their stadiums but to make a blanket statement like that is not accurate.

Good point. I'm sure they're hurting. Be interesting to see the numbers on the overall losses in hotel revenue, and restaurants. I bet there sobering.
This is true. But really those businesses can’t staff for full houses anyway. It’s rough economic times either way.

Did you imagine it was anything other than a commercial transaction? I am sorry that you feel so ripped off. Your choice on how you feel though.
