Latson named to Wooden Award watch list

Florida State Women’s Basketball freshman guard Ta’Niya Latson has been selected to the John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 Watch List, announced on Wednesday by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on ESPN2.

Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2022-23 season thus far, the list comprises of 25 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor.

Latson is one of four players who make their debut on the list, joining UConn’s Aaliyah Edwards, Michigan’s Emily Kiser and Utah’s Alissa Pili. She is one of five ACC selections that also includes Deja Kelly (UNC), Elizabeth Kitley (Virginia Tech), Olivia Miles (Notre Dame) and Hailey Van Lith (Louisville).

The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2023 John R. Wooden Award Women’s Player of the Year presented by Wendy’s. Players not chosen to the preseason or midseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award.

Latson leads the ACC in scoring at 25.2 points per game, and also ranks in the Top 10 in the league in field goal percentage (sixth; 50.2 percent), free throw percentage (sixth; 84.3 percent) and steals (seventh; 2.2). She is one of the nation’s most efficient high-volume scorers in the country, averaging 1.05 points per possession.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award Program hosts the most prestigious honors in college basketball recognizing The Wooden Award Most Outstanding Player for men and women, The Wooden Award All-America Teams for men and women and the annual selection of the Wooden Award Legend of Coaching recipient.

Honorees have proven to their university that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the John R. Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden and the Wooden Award Steering Committee, including making progress towards graduation and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Previous winners include Larry Bird (’79), Michael Jordan (’84), Tim Duncan (’97), Kevin Durant (’07), Candace Parker (’07; ’08), Maya Moore (’09; ’11), Chiney Ogwumike (’14), and last year’s recipients, Aliyah Boston of South Carolina and Oscar Tshiebwe of Kentucky.

Latson Earns USBWA National Freshman Player of the Week for the Second Time

Ta’Niya Latson earned another honor on Wednesday, being named the National Freshman Player of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association for the second time this season.

The honor adds to a tremendous week for Latson, who swept ACC Player and Rookie of the Week after leading the Seminoles to road wins at No. 13 North Carolina and Georgia Tech.
