• COURSE: The Old White TPC, 7,287 yards, par 70. Named for the Old White Hotel that stood on the property for more than six decades, Charles Blair Macdonald’s 1914 design is the first of now five courses at the Greenbrier. Several holes draw upon famed layouts in Macdonald’s native Scotland, notably No.8’s sloped “redan” green patterned after North Berwick’s 15th. Also, No.13 draws upon Prestwick’s “Alps” and the 15th imitates “Eden” at St. Andrews. The Old White’s 18th was the site of Sam Snead’s final hole-in-one in 1995. The PGA TOUR arrived in 2010, promptly going into the record book as Stuart Appleby’s closing 59 propelled him to win the first Greenbrier Classic. After last year’s massive floods, Keith Foster oversaw a restoration that preserved the routing plan and hole concepts.

• FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 points.

• CHARITY: Neighbors Helping Neighbors, an initiative launched in May 2016 and pressed into action with the region’s devastating floods just a month later. With 13 tons of canned food already on hand, the project also provided clothing and cleaning supplies to residents impacted by the floodwaters. Later, NHN partnered with other agencies to help repair and rebuild homes.

• FIELD WATCH: Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, who own summer homes at The Greenbrier, and THE PLAYERS champion Si Woo Kim head a roster that features four of the top 30 players in the latest world rankings. … Stuart Appleby, who used a Sunday 59 to capture the inaugural Greenbrier Classic in 2010, and John Daly were given sponsor exemptions into this year’s field. … Davis Love III and son Dru are both entered, the first time they will tee it up in the same TOUR event. Dru Love made his pro debut at the U.S. Open. … Alan Cooke, a senior at West Virginia, will play on the unused exemption he earned by winning last year’s West Virginia Amateur.

• 72-HOLE RECORD: 258, Stuart Appleby (2010).

• 18-HOLE RECORD: 59, Stuart Appleby (4th round, 2010).

• LAST YEAR: Extensive flooding scrubbed the 2016 edition, leaving parts of the Old White TPC under three feet of mud while hundreds of residents were forced from their homes. The Greenbrier Resort itself was used to house and feed some 700 flood victims, before turning to its own repairs and restoring its five courses. The 2015 tournament was captured by Danny Lee, who emerged from a four-man playoff for his first PGA TOUR victory. The New Zealand pro shot a 3-under-par 67 to join Kevin Kisner, David Hearn and Robert Streb for extra holes. Kisner and Streb were eliminated on a replay of No.18, and Hearn’s drive on the second extra hole wound up behind a tree and allowed Lee to claim victory with a par.

• STORYLINES: Mickelson tees it up for the first time since his stunning breakup with caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay, ending a 25-year partnership that brought 41 PGA TOUR victories and five major championships. Mickelson’s brother Tim will man the bag for the rest of the season. … Though Watson has never failed to break 70 in three previous visits, he’s still seeking his first top-10 finish. He tied for 13th two years ago, which followed a share of 16th in 2014. … The Classic has been a come-from-behind haven since its inception, still with no 54-hole leader able to close out the final day. Three of the six winners have come from at least four shots back – Jonas Blixt (2013), Ted Potter Jr. (2012) and Appleby (2010).

• SHORT CHIPS: Up to four British Open berths are available this week for players among the top 12 finishers not already qualified for Royal Birkdale. After Sunday, just one berth will be left for the top non-qualified finisher among the top 5 at next week’s John Deere Classic. … Wednesday’s pro-am also will serve as a tribute to the flood’s first responders, with representatives from local police, firefighters, and the National Guard selected to serve as caddies. … Among the pro-am celebrities set to tee it up: Saints coach Sean Payton, college coaching icons Don Nehlen (West Virginia) and Bob Pruett (Marshall) and “Duck Dynasty” stars Willie and Jase Robertson.

good luck to everyone this week

I was not aware Phil has never made the cut here in three attempts. He is three under after round one.

A notable omission. Is this the first tournament minus Bones?

Yes first tournament without Bones and as Bill also pointed out Phil was 0 for 3 in cuts here , not to mention he flies out for Scottish Open as soon as this wraps so I just didnt see a good round, unless you count tinkering with your swing as a good round...
of course early returns look like I was wrong yet again..damn it

although Streb abd Delaet played pretty good today, which means they are doomed tomorrow

In typical Phil fashion, goes out and fires a way to late 64 to move into the top 20...

Streb and Schauffele tied at 13 starting on back nine

Good final round today, lot of guys fighting for first win and a shot at The Open. Munoz struggled with the flat stick and that gave an opening to Xander Schauffele who shot a 67 with a birdie on his 72nd hole to take the win. Like this young mans game.

In the PGSF, fsu67810 continues on his hot streak with a great pick of Xander Schauffele to secure victory this week.

Congratulations to fsu67810

Got to say that was not real thrilling golf today. It looked more like a contest to see who didn't want to lose it vs one where players were trying to win it.
