POST-PRACTICE UPDATE

As I posted earlier, Jimbo confirmed that Ryan Hoefeld will start at center. He said it's been "amazing" how much more confident and competent Hoefeld is compared to a year ago. Said "the light came on" and talked about how cerebral that position is. Said he probably would have been the starter in the first few games if he wasn't recovering from the spring knee surgery.

From a team perspective, Jimbo said he's been happy with the whole week of practice. Liked what he saw today. Said the team was sharp in film room and on field with assignments.

As for the weather in North Carolina, Jimbo said they're taking a lot of precautions, such as bringing 30-40 footballs (and football dryers) to make sure they don't get too heavy in the rain. Said the key to playing in those conditions is focus and mental toughness.

They also are checking on weather in surrounding areas, where FSU coaches are out recruiting on Friday. Don't want to put coaches in harm's way or get them stranded somewhere before the game.

Regarding Mario Pender, Jimbo said his family has been up to see him in the hospital (mother, brother, girlfriend, others). Said he's had some down moments emotionally in the hospital, but "he's a survivor." Said he's been impressed by the way Pender has fought through so many obstacles.

Fisher said Vickers and Patrick have practiced well in Pender's place. He also said that Lorenzo Featherston's knee has held up and he should be able to play some Saturday.

INJURY REPORT

OUT THIS WEEK -- Cole Minshew is out with a concussion. Mario Pender is out with the collapsed lung.

OUT FOR SEASON -- Abdul Bello, Ryan Green, Tyrell Lyons and Jalen Wilkerson. All have had season-ending surgeries.

EARLY UPDATE

The weather might be awful this weekend in North Carolina, but it was a beautiful and warm day at the practice fields. FSU was practicing in shells as they went over final preparations before leaving for Winston-Salem (well, actually Greensboro, where the team is staying) tonight.

As they did earlier in the week, the RBs worked with wet footballs. Today, they spent a lot of time catching wet footballs as receivers coming out of the backfield. It was rough going for a lot of them. Although I do think it's harder to catch a wet football when you're dry ... seems like players get a little more acclimated when they're soaked too.

Didn't get much time to watch the OL because Trickett took them into the IPF while the rest of the team was outdoors. But during the part we saw, Ryan Hoefeld was the starting center. I think it's a safe bet that he will be starting Saturday. So you'd be looking at Johnson, Are, Hoefeld, Bell and Kelly.

Chad Mavety appeared to be practicing fine and was with the second team at guard. I did not see OL Cole Minshew or TE Jalen Wilkerson.

That's about it for now. Will have more when we speak with Jimbo after practice. Should be by like 6:20-6:30.
