I know folks here won't agree (especially those that live in So Fla) but we need Miami to return to what they were back in the early 2000's and 1990's/late 80's. If the canes were a consistent top 10 team a lot of the ACC's problems go away because you have a strong Miami/ FSU/ Clemson (the real football schools) doing what they are supposed to be doing and creating a stronger perception for the conference. Not only that but the games against the canes, when they are good, is that much better. But that is not what this thread is about.

My question is what the heck happened to them?
Back in the early 2000's they were a premier program with Butch Davis as their coach. He leaves and they promote Larry Coker (mistake #1) and then Randy Shannon (mistake #2)--- during this time a player gets murdered and the program falls & never recovers. But what are the underlying causes of this?

Some say it's money-- they can't hire top notch coaches-- being a private school that makes sense.

But others say it was Donna Shalala, who during her term as president, basically made sure Miami would be a respectable program off the field. This usually equates to being mediocre at best, on the field, which UM has been.

Others say it's the ACC entrance criteria for student athletes. That this was a game changer for many of the elite south Florida athletes that would have normally gone to scUM.

All of those make sense... but is there anyone close to the situation that really knows what is going on down there? Are they basically dead for good? Kind of looks that way.
