I am will start a new segment on why FSU should hire a certain coach. Today we will dissect Brennan Marion the OC from UNLV.
Why Brennan Marion - He is 37 years old. FSU needs a coach who is not only young but relates to the type of players FSU is going to recruit. He grew up in Hampton, Virginia. Outside of Dade County, Houston Texas, New Orleans, Atlanta....Hampton, Virginia has produced some serious talent. Marion has grown up as one of those guys from those areas. He is basically a self-made coach. One that has had to work hard as nothing was given to him. He created his own identity with the GO-GO Offense. I had a friend hit me up today and say FSU can't win with that gimmicky offense. His offense is far from a gimmick. No different than Hal Mumme Air Raide which Mike Leach took to another level and you see Miami using it. You see USC using it. You see the Washington Redskins using it. Marion offense has been around for years. It has concepts of the option offense. If you watched UNLV last night -Marion uses concepts of what Norvell has used at FSU. They may show different formations but the ideas are the same. Mike likes to use counter plays. Marion used a ton of Counter runs last night. They work when EXECUTED. I like Marion offense because he believes in it and so do the players who run it.
UNLV vs San Jose State- The two teams played last night...UNLV had a pick six, they had two drives start in the first half where San Jose State stuffed them one leading to a missed kick. What did Marion do? He stayed patience. He had a bigger, more physical offensive line and in terrible weather stuck to his strengths. HIs core beliefs...RUN THE BALL. UNLV did and they took the game over. There are times during the season or a game where things just don't go your way. It is when you face adversity how does your team perform. UNLV came through a lot of bad and won....
Why not Marion - I am a fan of Marion and his offense. He also checks the box of being an elite recruiter. He is going to improve the roster. Being a coach in the SEC - He knows what SEC talent looks like. Fuller and Atkins never recruited at that level. They knew about finding gems and developing them. FSU is not a program you should be DEVELOPING. You find and recruit ELITE talent. PERIOD. My concern is will he have the time to turn this around. I though Kendall Briles was a very good coach but he got one season and the plug was pulled. While Marion has recruited at a high level inside the state of Texas and Cali, he has yet to do so in Florida.
Final Thoughts: Marion is in my top group. He is 1A or 1B on my list.
