Lacking a professional board of regulation, coaching is governed only by an "honor among thieves" mentality and driven by pressure from a fan base that will flip on you in a heartbeat. So buckle up for what's about to happen over the coming six months as the worst of human nature will be revealed.

The House vs NCAA seeks to put some guardrails on the Wild West of NIL and the transfer portal but doesn't go into effect until July 1, so rather than abide by the spirit of the upcoming settlement, the "profession of coaching" is rushing out to frontend load their rosters with early entries before the guardrails are installed on July 1, which will set caps on how much money a school can revenue share with players, and to determin the true "fair market value" of an NIL media agreement.

Should NCAA v House be finalized on April 7, 2025 it will force every NIL agreement to be pre-approved by an independent third-party clearinghouse (Probably Deloitte) who will run a fair market value for each athlete using an algorythm. If the NIL deal is larger than the athletes value, the agreement will be rejected and must be lowered to fair market or the player and school could lose eligibility and the school lose some of its revenue sharing cap (We expect this to be challenged in the courts sooner than later.).

Knowing that is coming in July, coaches are offering inflated NIL deals to prospects and players on other coaches' rosters this December before they have to be cleared by the clearinghouse and so they won't count against the school's cap.

My understanding is Mike Norvell has requested a war chest not just to go get players but to protect the players on his roster he needs to keep.

Coaches, who have every reason to worry from year to year that their fan bases will flip on them, can't worry about the "spirit of the rule" or professional ethics as they depend on 17-year-olds to save their jobs. Professional ethics is for real professions like medicine, law. accounting which are governed by a regulatory board.

Coaches have joked about 'honor among thieves' but wait until you see what will happen in the next few weeks as there will always be an opposing coach willing to pay more, even for a 3 star prospect you covet. And there will always be an opposing coach willing to overpay for a player on your three-deep roster you need to keep.

Pressure to recruit from the fan base is driving the value of every player and prospect, because coaches are always under pressure to steal a player from a fellow coach's position. As a result, look for the next six months to be an "Oklahoma land grab" as you will see the worst of human nature unfold in anticipation of the first guardrails on the Wild West going up on July 1.

Yeehaw!
