Kidney Stone - How bad is this going to be?

I just left the hospital with a kidney stone that has about made it's way to my bladder. They said it's a big one. I read that the pain from before was it making it's way to the bladder. On a scale of 1 to 10 how bad is this going to be coming out?

It hurts 100x more going from the kidneys to bladder. Matter of fact it barely hurt at all going from bladder to toilet (although it took like 3 weeks) it was more of a surprise than anything. I guess it had just been bouncing around my bladder for weeks waiting for the perfect moment to escape. That part was easy for me, the hard part is over champ. I also went to the hospital for the first part because I thought my appendix burst or something.

OP, it really depends on how big it is. Size matters! :D If it made its way from the kidney to the bladder and you are here to tell about it, you should survive. Once it makes it to the urethra, it should come out during one trip to urinate. Just grin and bear it. Oh, and a little blood and burning is normal.

they said it is a pretty big one but i had about 4 waves of pain that came in about 8/10. Sounds like the hardest part is over and the pain meds will help out.

What are the causes of kidney stones? And what about people with narrow urethra :)

Make sure to save it in a jar to show the grandkids one day.

Was on a conference call in my office at my desk while another particpant from my office was sitting across from me. He looked uncomfortable before the call but didn't say anything. It was a large deal and I assumed he was under some pressure. By the midddle of the confrence call he was no longer sitting, he was lying across the chair. I muted the call to asked if he was ok and he proceeded to nod while grimacing. About 15 minutes later he ended up crawling out of my office. He later said he almost blacked out. I think it took a week to pass. We have some great stories.

I guess this thing isn't done with me yet. That last wave felt like I was being stabbed in my side. But that feels like heaven when the pain starts to fade away and you go back to a low dull pain. Hope this thing gets moving soon.

I used to work with an ole boy who suffered from them on a regular basis. He said it was like pissing a sand spur...

Yes, as mentioned above, the pain is from the kidneys the bladder. You are on easy street now.

If it's that big, why didn't it knock you on your ass before it made its way to bladder?

And I've had a half dozen of them. They are torcher (torture) for sure!!

If you have had 6 stones and you are still young...you have a problem than needs to be addressed. I'd suggest going to a nephrologist for your kidneys.

I've had two...one was a "fast mover" and was over and out in 10 minutes. The other put me in the ER and I passed it a few days later.

If your insurance is decent you can look into getting them lasered every year or so.

I think they lied how close this thing was to the bladder. Today has been waves of pain and discomfort. I just puked and feel like hell. I really underestimated this damn thing.

I've had 2. The first one I couldn't pass and had to have the surgery Shock Wave Lithotripsy done wasn't bad, you have a stent put in to help all the broken stones leave the body. The 2nd wasn't as bad as the first. Took about a week and a half to come out no pain until it got right to the end and felt like a little poof popping out. The doc gave me some meds that opens your bladder more to pee a lot to help push it out.

Mine was 10 years ago. Had to go to the ER ... twice. It wasn't the size of mine that made it so painful, it was the shape. Apparently it has a sharp point, so as it made its way down ...

Furthermore, I didn't pass it, nor was it lithotripsy. They has to go get it. Not surgery since there was no incision. Think the long pole with a controllable end piece that you use to retrieve a light bulb that is very high in the ceiling.

Best of luck my friend.

My dad was sick and had a sharp pain in the side of his belly my sophomore year at FSU. My dad isn't very touch feely at all, and was definitely glad when I got out the house and went off to college. When I spoke with him from the hospital, I asked him if he wanted me to come home he said, "yes" I knew something was really wrong. Well come to find out what he thought was killing him dang near was kidney stones. So I have never had them, but if they made my dad sound/act like that it must have been bad.

Thats good advice and all, but Im laughing at the thought that you think I havent seen a specialist yet. But yes, Im all over it. It's been 10 years or so since my last one. Knock on wood, I hope I am done having them. But they are very unpredictable.

Got about 3 hours of sleep after the pain meds kicked in then was up all night. Just found out it's a 6mm beast. I feel like little Nolester87 will never be the same after this.

I thought they used sound waves in a water tank to bust them up. Obviously I've never had one.

I had an ultra sound a few years ago that showed I have a few, but to my knowledge I have not passed them. Since then I drink water and lemon like it's going out of style.

Good to hear. I'm particularly sensitive to kidney issues. My daughter had kidney failure while in the NICU (she was a micro preemie). Once she recovered, we learned recently that she has mututaion with her kidneys where she does not re-absorb calcium. So here kidneys are covered with small stones. She's now on medicine to help get rid of them. None of the stones are particularly big. But she's got that preemie pain threshold that she just says...ouch and moves on. It's amazing.

Oh man, I hate that for your daughter, that is brutal. My kidney stones sound similar to what is going on with her. They were small and I only was able to catch one of them. It was super tiny, maybe two or three times bigger than a grain of sand...and I assure you that was enough to put me on my arse.

We didn't figure it out it was kidney stones until the second, maybe third time it happened. There wasn't much they could do for me other than give me morphine and pain killers. I would stay doped up and wait for them pass. Normally took less than a week. Never had to do lipotripsy (sp) or anything. Only thing I changed was my diet. I started laying off milk and soda, and I now drink a lot of water. Again, knock on wood, but it's been a good while since I passed one.

Hang in there brotha....keep hitting the morphine clicker. It was the only thing that ever completely elevated the pain for me. Made me feel weird as hell, but I didn't feel the pain.

We have had nephrologist since she was in the NICU and she has semi-annual ultra sounds. Our last nephrologist is the one that diagnosed her properly. The problem with that many stones is that it can reduce kidney function over time. We did a 24 hour urine sample test and her calcium level was 18. Normal is sub-4. Doctor called is in right away. So, now she is one water pills and takes them like a champ. Interesting, even though it is a genetic mutation, it can fix itself. This tiny girl really is amazing. Ok, enough of Dad's gushing.

Oh wow...how old is she now?

She is 3 1/2. Pretty tiny. I don't know if we have gotten to 25 pounds yet. But doing really well. No real appreciable learning delay. She weighed 1 lb. 14 oz at birth (26 weeks)

Wow man, that's amazing. I'm glad she is doing well today. I couldn't imagine. We found out we are expecting again. I'm praying everyday for a health baby. But if something were not to go right, I hope my little one is a brave and strong as your girl!
Thanks for sharing!
