Mike Norvell

Opening Statement: Wishes everyone well, definitely excited about spring practice and wrapping up winter. Been a great couple months, physical developments have been absolutely outstanding both in the weight room, to strength, to some of the mental growth we've seen -- mental toughness. NCAA has allowed walk-thru's, has accelerated the progress going into spring. Leadership, approach to work is probably the biggest growth that we've seen, they're accepting the challenge. These guys challenge themselves daily, it's been exciting to see their response. Every practice is critical in physical development, physicality, understanding of concepts and scheme...the identity that will be formed will be critical. Continuing to explore options for media availability

How was mental growth been different: "how they walk thru the door". Confidence is built thru the investment of work. When you've seen you can overcome and get better, it's going to give you confidence for what you can face. To do it with a smile on their face, an edge, an intensity and when the adversity shows up, their response (has been great).

Anticipation for spring, transfers: the excitement for spring practice. I've never missed spring ball more than I have over the course of this last year. It's critical in establishing your identity -- we missed out on that. We're gonna get after it, it's gonna be fun to see guys compete and guys respond and build confidence in the situational work that they'll experience. Transfers: Remarkable, ability they're showing is good. We knew what we were getting but who they are, they fit -- they've gelled with their teammates. Getting them earlier was a critical component; we might add another

Milton and managing him: Joy to watch him. Putting a kid in this situation (injury, new school), he's wanted to go thru all aspects, show the team he is part of it. Tour of Duty, weight room -- remarkable watching him, his change of direction, work in the weight room, training room. Communication has been key in managing his workload. He's excelling in the things we're asking him to do but we're going to be smart with it. He looks great

More on Milton: He's been fully cleared. He's looked great (in Tour of Duty). I'm excited to see him get acclimated to the true speed of the spring. Watched his scout film at UCF, you could see how serious he took it, you could see his excitement. Now it's about timing, learning new language, new concepts, he's excited

Gains in the weight room: today is last day of winter so doesn't have final numbers but its' been an exciting spring to see the overall development of guys. They're not seeing this as something they're being forced to do, it's something they want to do -- investing in being successful. They're trying to maximize the opportunity of every day. Certain guys waking up in the middle of the night to make protein shakes to hit their weight gain goals. Jordan Travis is over 200 lbs and is moving well. Amari Gainer right around "230+ mark" but these guys are running faster than they've runned [sic]. Ja'Shaun Corbin has been a star of the offseason program, he's close to 215 and flying around the field, his leadership has been positive.

Plenty of screaming been going on the first couple of months, too. All the adversity created over the winter has been created by coaches -- you want to push and see a response.

Player rehab: Chubba will be back and rolling thru spring ball, all QBs will be non-contact; I've seen them all take hits. I like where the majority of our team is in their rehab process. He was asked about Meiko and Devontay but didn't mention them

Position changes: Ja'khi Douglas will start out at WR. I've been so pleased (with him). He will always be a guy that can go back in the backfield in that slash role. Defensively there will be some moving pieces, especially backfield, inside and outside where they're lining up but nothing major -- some tweaks

Chemistry of QB room: It's been great. They're working together, they're pushing together. I'me excited about their future and the competition. Watch them in walk thru's and Tour of Duty, they're there teaching, encouraging. Guys helping guide McKenzie and he's then trying to help guide younger guys. It's gonna be a special room.

Jordan Wilson: will be very limited in what he does this spring. He's remarkable. His size, speed, athleticism, physicality of what he brings at that size, I think that can be a huge boost to the position. We've seen Camm, Wyatt Rector pushing 240-245 lbs, former QB who's been remarkable in the offseason. Mentioned Preston Daniel coming along. Depth of that position will be night and day to what it was

Freshmen: 5 freshman came in and we hit on all of them. Work ethic, ability, relationship....they're remarkable. McClain, Burrell don't look like freshman WRs. McClain's speed and explosiveness, it will be fun to watch in the game. Burrell one of the strongest freshman coming in. Knowles: his change of direction, mindset. Farmer: he's played a lot o DE, he'll move inside full-time, he's pushing 270lb, moves unbelievably well. Estes one of the strongest guys on our team, exciting to see what he's done in the weight room. Will have an opportunity to compete. We're gonna look back at this class and we're gonna be excited about the HS kids we brought in

On transfers: Not one o the transfers was promised anything -- other than an opportunity. Opportunity to compete and help this football team. They were the absolute right fit for FSU, they didn't want a guaranteed role. A lot of these guys have emerged as leaders, that's an exciting thing as a coach. I can't make them a leader, they have to take the actions...these guys have worked.

Continuity of coaching staff: Huge in all aspects. Communication, expectations, the standard and push and development of what we're doing. Previous 4 yrs, 4 different offenses and defenses; to be able to carry it over and know there will be a base to work off of, now it's about fundamentals.

Jackson West: as good of an opportunity to help this team as anybody. Remarkable in his change of direction. Remarkable in the way he's done in workouts, mindset, approach....he's gonna be on the fast track. Unbelievable future ahead of him. We have a great chance to see early in his career make an impact

Wrap on Mike

Biggest difference: They have a better of idea what to expect. Now they have confidence we won't put something in front of them that they can't achieve. Now that they understand the system, they come in with more excitement. We've built more relationships and trust.

Excitement of spring: Last month has been closer to full strength, business as usual. Gives us what we lost out on last year -- time. Time to make progress. We lost in excess of 30% of our training days.

Transfers preparation for new system: Depends on program they're coming from and its focus, it's all across the board. I'll reach out to former strength coaches to see where they were at -- injury history, exercise modifications. We're super fortunate, the guys we brought in know how to train and came in with their best foot forward

Corbin: Corbin is a stud. Ultra, ultra reliable. Stays with himself and tries to make guys around him better in the process.

Mental toughness starts on how you're approaching that 1% for the day, how you walk into the IPF. It's teaching guys that what matters is the task at hand, getting them in the mindset is that the most important thing is the task at hand, the main thing is the main thing. If you can get them to do that, you get better. You have to control your mindset when things get tough

Guys that haven't arrived: we reach out within a few days of getting the NLI and then we build relationship and see how they're training, where they're at and what situation they're coming from. Coach Coleman handles that aspect. We have an app to communicate. Freshman Intensification Program handled by Coleman when they arrive, we like to get them up to speed with their class before plugging them in with vets. It's about identifying mental characteristics of the new guys

Can Milton be inspirational: 100%. Everyone knows who McKenzie Milton is. They're aware of his injury. They see where he's come from, absolutely it can be inspirational

The camaraderie of weight room clips on social media: It's been awesome to see. It's been a focus of ours -- building brotherhood. Being able to be as invested in your brother's success as your own. You can see that starting to take hold. If it can happen in the weight room, it can carry over into the locker room and gameday. You can see in those clips it's growing everyday

Guys who decided to return: they're truly choosing us, choosing this program. New level of buy in and ownership. It's been fun to see. Emmett Rice -- 201 when we got here, weighed in at 232, that shows buy in, that doesn't happen by accident.

Amari Gainer: 200 lbs when we got here, low 230s now. Guy that can probably play in the mid-high 230s on his way to 240s. 30+ lbs on bench, cleans. Hip mobility better

That's a wrap.
Corey loves you all
