The 2014 Zurich Classic
of New Orleans will feature a good blend of up-and-coming players with
some of the old lions of the PGA Tour. What it won't have is Masters champ Bubba Watson or any top 10 golfer in the current world rankings.
Justin Rose, the world's 11th-ranked player and reigning U.S. Open champ, is the top competitor in the field.
There
are only two other golfers entered in the field who are ranked in the
top 25, Keegan Bradley (18) and former Baton Rouge resident and
University High graduate Patrick Reed (24).
Major
winners Ernie Els, currently ranked 41st in the world, and Vijay Singh
top the list of veteran players who will compete in next week's
tournament, which begins April 24-27.
Notably missing are Watson, a
Zurich regular and the 2011 champ, and Jason Dufner, the 2012 winner
who also had the Zurich as part of his regular stop in years past.
Watson,
who jumped to fourth in the world following last week's Masters
victory, is taking time off following his victory in last week's
Masters. After winning the 2012 Masters, Watson still took part in the
Zurich. However, there were two weeks separating the tournaments that
year.
Dufner, ranked 16th in the world, is opting for appearance
fee money to play in the European Tour's Volvo China Open next week,
which also includes top 10 players Henrik Stenson and Ian Poulter.
The
Zurich will have several players on a hot run, including Reed, who is
currently third in the FedEx Cup rankings and has won twice on the tour
this season.
Two golfers who finished in the top 10 of the Masters
are entered, including Rickie Fowler, who tied for fifth place, and
Kevin Stadler, who tied for eighth.
