Webb Simpson wins in playoff at Waste Management

Two-time FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy and defending champion Webb Simpson lead a star-studded field seeking some valuable early-season FedExCup points at TPC Scottsdale in this year’s Waste Management Phoenix Open.
FIELD NOTES: McIlroy will tee it up in Phoenix for the first time in his career. It’s part of a busy stretch for the two-time FedExCup winner, who is in the midst of playing nine events in 12 weeks… Fellow FedExCup winner Justin Thomas is looking to improve on his T3 finish in Phoenix from 2020… Simpson is one of four PLAYERS champions in the field, along with McIlroy, Si Woo Kim (who recently won The American Express) and former WMPO champion Rickie Fowler… Arizona State alum Jon Rahm is looking to keep his stretch of solid play going. Rahm has notched three straight top-10 finishes on TOUR and was T2 heading into the weekend at the Farmers Insurance Open… A trio of promising young players received sponsor exemptions. Zalatoris, who has already earned special temporary membership on the PGA TOUR, has three top-10s this season, including a T6 at the U.S. Open. He also leads the Korn Ferry Tour’s Regular Season Points List. Davis Riley is No. 3 in the KFT’s rankings after winning twice in 2020. John Augenstein, the 2019 U.S. Amateur runner-up, will be making his second pro start after missing the cut at The American Express.
FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 500 FedExCup points.
COURSE: TPC Scottsdale (Stadium), 7,261 yards, par 71 (yardage subject to change). Due to COVID-19 safety protocols, one of the most well-attended events on the PGA TOUR will reduce its capacity to just 5,000 fans per day. The Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish design opened in 1986 and every Phoenix Open since 1987 has been played at the par-71 layout just northeast of downtown Phoenix.
STORYLINES: Long-time participants at the Waste Management Phoenix Open will likely have to adjust to the lack of noise in 2021, especially around the par-3 16th hole… One notable absentee for 2021 is three-time winner and one of Arizona’s most famous sons, Phil Mickelson. A fourth victory would make Mickelson the winningest champion in the tournament’s history… Simpson looks to defend a TOUR title for the first time in his career… Brooks Koepka looks to break his streak of three straight missed cuts on the PGA TOUR… Can Tony Finau capture his second TOUR victory? Finau shared the 54-hole lead at The American Express earlier this month and lost in a playoff last year at TPC Scottsdale.

72-HOLE RECORD: 256, Mark Calcavecchia (2001), Phil Mickelson (2013).
18-HOLE RECORD: 60, Grant Waite (4th round, 1996), Mark Calcavecchia (2nd round, 2001), Phil Mickelson (2nd round, 2005, and 1st round, 2013).
LAST TIME: Despite a bogey on the par-5 15th, Simpson made two birdies in a row on the 71st and 72nd to slide into a playoff with Finau. Simpson rolled in a 17-footer for a birdie on the final hole of regulation to tie Finau -- who had a one-shot lead entering Sunday after a sizzling 62 on Saturday -- at 17 under before adding in one more birdie on the first playoff hole. It was Simpson’s seventh PGA TOUR title, and first of two in 2020. Thomas, who shot a Sunday 65 (the round of the day) finished T3 alongside Bubba Watson and Nate Lashley.

Ed, you're bound to hit a streak of luck soon (whether its through a Gypsy woman, magical hardwood twig, crafty game-board-crystallized 8-ball, or just plain reach in to the spinning barrel lottery-number draw). I'd offer a tip or something, but my selection choices suck almost as bad as my real-life golf game...I got nothing (for ya)...

Liz - time for me to select my guy...kind of like the first year I joined a fantasy football league and took the Bears Defense with my first pick. What the heck did I know except that 'Defense wins Championships'. Thought it made sense. Trying to find a spark and maybe it'll turn out okay. Or it could be Vesuvius...ya never know.

I understand, Noler. First year I played Fantasy Football, I knew nothing about it and took a kicker with my first pick (think he kicked for Detroit) assuming he'd score a bunch of points. Now you see why I try ANYTHING (be it a Ouija board, divining rod, gypsy medium, etc.) rather than on my own intuitions.

Ed - it was sad, as I then took a kicker (see how that logic abounds!), then a RB, QB and finally receivers & TE. I was mocked unmercifully by a Co-workers husband (he was an arrogant gator, what should I have expected...?) who was in the league and I heard it left-right, up-down, front-center-and sideways. It was h-e-double hockey sticks...My one solace was that Bama spanked Timmy and his crew that year in the SECCG, and not much else was heard except excuses.

Maybe this week is our week...ever the rain-drops-on-roses & whiskers-on-kittens optimist. ;)<oh...should I turn in my man-card now...?>

I wasn't sure, so I had to look it up. The Sound of Music? Yes. Man card voided.

Oh wait. I love ABBA. Let's call it a push, shall we?

One of my rehab therapists used to be neighbors with George Foreman. She said he's a HUGE Abba fan. Don't think anyone's taking his "man card".

*Koepka
Berger
Palmer
McIlroy

*BK is my man and I'm obligated by loyalty to pick him no matter how poorly he's playing.
A smart man would only pick him when he is healthy and playing Majors. Never let me be confused with a smart man

Yep, George'll whip that arse if you mess with his 8 Tracks...of course these lyrics might be leading you, Ed, to your next PGSF pickin'-machine...beware the muse who utters this:

If you change your mind, (take a chance, take a chance...)
I'm the first in line
Honey I'm still free
Take a chance on me
If you need me, let me know, gonna be around
If you've got no place to go, if you're feeling down.

got you a -3 on Thursday, not a bad start

I'm blaming the TV guys. They did the sure thing curse when they said Justin Thomas had not missed a green today. That was on 16 and he just barely was on the green. But on 17 ........ tee shot to a fairway bunker, bunker shot to a green side bunker, green side bunker shot into the water on the other side. When the crash and burn was over, Thomas carded a triple to go from -4 to -1.

I am blaming the TV announcer's curse for even bringing up the GIR thing in the first when he was on the tee at 16. Don't these guys know about The Curse????

I would love to see Steve Stricker be in the mix and win this weekend. Always been one of my favorites. Was nice seeing him play well yesterday.
If he continues to play well all season, perhaps he'll use one of his Ryder Cup captain's picks on himself...Could you imagine the crowd support he'd receive at Whistling Straits (provided there's a crowd, of course)??
