Stat Bomb – Pro Football Focus grades recap

Here’s a short rundown of the PFF grades from the FSU-Miami game. PFF does not allow us post grades for all the players, so we hit the high and lowlights. But if you have a question about a specific player, just ask and I’ll be happy to provide that info.

Overall Team Grades:

Most of the overall Pro Football Focus grades were higher following FSU’s 31-28 win against Miami. The 74.9 team grade was the fourth highest of the season.

Top Mark: Run defense (85.9) and tackling (85.0) were both excellent. Florida State held Miami’s running game to just 43 yards and 1.9 yards per carry.

Low Mark: Florida State’s only below average PFF team grade was run blocking. The ‘Noles finished with a disappointing low mark of 47.3, the worst since the Louisville game. Even with the below average mark, FSU did manage to rush for 160 yards (3.3 per carry).

Odd: The defense had its highest overall grade vs. a Power-5 opponent checking in at 76.6. This was likely due the defense forcing three turnovers.

Passing:

Jordan Travis – 86.8 passing grade. This was Travis’ second highest grade of the season just behind the North Carolina game (90.4). / He finished 18-for-26 for 274 passing yards. He was sacked three times.

Rushing:

Jashaun Corbin – 56.7 rush grade / 68 yards rushing on 15 carries (4.5 YPC). His grade was docked because of the fumble.

Treshaun Ward – 70.2 rush grade / 9 rushes for 25 yards and one TD (2.3 YPC)

Receiving:

Ja'Khi Douglas (71.8) – Four catches on five targets for 90 yards.

Ontaria Wilson (70.3) – Four targets, three catches for 52 yards.

Andrew Parchment (60.9) – Targeted three times, two catches for 32 yards.

The Seminole receivers did much better after this catch in Saturday’s win. The wide receivers, tight ends and running backs racked up 118 total yards after the catch on 17 receptions. That’s a very respectable 6.9 YAC per reception.

Blocking:

Starting guards Dillan Gibbons and Devontay Love-Taylor both had excellent outings blocking for the pass. Gibbons turned his second highest pass-blocking grade of the season at 85.8. He didn’t surrender a single pressure on 33 passing plays. Love-Taylor has now had back-to-back games with a pass-blocking grade of 80 or higher finishing at 80.0 on Saturday. He surrendered just one pressure on 33 passing plays.

Center Maurice Smith was the only starter to finish with a below average pass-blocking grade at 37.1. He surrendered two pressures and was called for a penalty.

As noted above, the run-blocking grades weren’t great. Dillan Gibbons was the only starter to finish with a run blocking grade of 60 or higher at 60.4. Robert Scott (42.9) and Devontay Love-Taylor (46.1) both struggled in this department coming in under the 50 threshold.

The OL flagged for two penalties on Saturday.

Defense:

Three FSU defenders finished with PFF grades above 80 – starters Omarion Cooper (88.9) and Jermaine Johnson II (82.2), and backup Jarrett Jackson (83.2 / 13 snaps played). Frankly, Johnson’s score should be in the 90s. Not sure what else he could have done to play better. Shame on you PFF!

The only players to finish with a defensive score below 55 were Kevin Knowles II (53.4) Fabien Lovett (50.4) and Amari Gainer (46.7). Gainer was docked for poor coverage (43.3) giving up four catches for 50 yards on six targets. Knowles was targeted a whopping 10 times and gave up eight catches for 111 yards (52.1 cover grade).

It was an excellent tackling day for the Seminoles. Three players finished with grades above 80 - Akeem Dent (84.5), Kevin Knowles (82.1), Keir Thomas (80.4) – and nine of the 11 starters finished with marks above 70. Only Jarvis Brownlee Jr. (67.6) and Kalen DeLoach (58.5) fell below this level.

Omarion Cooper stole the show in coverage. The true freshman had a season-high 89.3 coverage grade. Miami really went after Cooper but he answered the bell giving up just two catches for 17 yards on eight targets and had a pick. This was the highest coverage grade by an FSU player vs. a P5 opponent this season. Akeem Dent also had a good day with a 75.3 PFF cover grade. As noted above, Gainer (43.3) and Knowles (52.1) both struggled in coverage.

Jarrett Jackson (79.9) and Jermaine Johnson (77.4) had the top pass rush marks for the defense. Again, Johnson’s score makes no sense given that he recorded three sacks, and had multiple pressures.

Keir Thomas was far and way the top defender vs. the run turning in a team high PFF grade of 90.0.
