Why do we assume SEC/B1G want to be superconferences?

Just asking why we all assume they will expand to include 48 or 60 or whatever. Maybe eventually but there has to be a solid monetary incentive. If they can both be super wealthy entities in competition with poorer ones getting the lion's share of regular season viewership and teams in an expanded playoff, why won't they just do that for a while and enjoy it? Why will they necessarily keep adding teams unless what they bring clearly outweighs having to split the pie into smaller pieces?
They can still play these other teams and earn money from them, right? Especially as the teams they might add will get less and less attractive as the big names come off the board.
I'm just questioning the leap everyone is making. Me included. My fear is that this will happen in stages like that and we would just have to live in the poorer group until it is a clear financial boon for the two heavyweights to become superconferences. Is that the case now? Maybe it is. I don't know. But maybe it's not.
