10/10/81 we were in South Bend and in the midst of the most daunting Murderers Row schedule, possibly ever:
@ Nebraska
@ Ohio State
@ Notre Dame
@ Pitt
@ LSU
All on the road, and all consecutively. Nebraska was Nebraska. Ohio State was Ohio State. Pitt was at their absolute peak and in the midst of a 31-1 stretch. Both ND and LSU ended up with down years but both were much better the previous year, and the whole idea of playing this behemoth of a 5-week schedule seems asinine now, but that's what we did. And we went a very respectable 3-2.
After it was over, we still had to face a Miami team having their best season ever, a Southern Miss team having their best season ever, and mercifully, a visit to the Swamp.
