Shared some of this in another thread here but heard from an fsu guy on TMB about sharing it here. I realized many didn’t see it. Figured it should share it as it’s own thread if people may want to know.

I was involved in an accident on Friday. A lady pulled out in front of me while I was traveling about 60 miles an hour. I am happy she is OK. I was not nearly as lucky.

I don’t want to go into too many details, but I broke the hip sockets on both sides, the femurs on both sides, and suffered a severely comminuted wrist fracture . The right hip was completely displaced, which is absolute hell on earth. Not that rest isn’t.

Right now I am about eight hours out from my fifth and hopefully final surgery. On the plus side, I’ve had great care. They’ve done a lot to control pain. But it’s the worst thing I’ve ever experienced and it’s something I would never wish on anyone.

I am looking at at least 12 weeks from now before we can even consider any weight bearing. That means figuring out how to get back to Tallahassee for inpatient rehabilitation and then home to deal with the rest of my care. It is and will be hell on me and my wife. But it is not the end. I will get through this. We have realized just how blessed we are. The support system we have is not only incredible, but it is overwhelming. We will have all the help we need I am sure. We already have people figuring out which doors will need to be widened and where the ramps are going to go and all of the other things that I will need.

Guys, I really like some of you, and some of you drive me crazy. But I beg each and every one of you To be extremely safe with you and your family in every single thing that you do. Like the commercial says, life comes at you fast. You can be doing everything right and in three seconds it is all changed. I had planned to be Participating in the Tallahassee Winter parade Saturday night with my friends and crewmates. Now, my primary goal is to be able to walk that parade route one year from now. I never could’ve imagined life changing so fast.

*edit* I was wrong on the femurs. Thank god. Acetabulems are wrecked but that’s good news. Had not read this in a while and don’t want things unclear.

OMG, I am so sorry to hear about the crash and hope for the best.

Holy crap. Hope for a speedy recovery. Are you not in your hometown right now and need to be transported to Tally? I'm glad you have the wits to post. Please keep us posted and if there is anything we can do.
Get well my friend.
No, I was in Bay County returning to Tallahassee. There was no way an ambulance was going to be able to take me to Leon County from where the accident happened. They brought me right to the trauma center at bay medical, and have been getting me stabilized since Friday. It sounds like that should’ve been easy, but I had to get surgery on Saturday (after having a reduction of a full right hip displacement, something I suggest no one ever consider), then another surgery on Monday, and another surgery on Wednesday, and now I am trying to get stable enough to be able to go to inpatient rehabilitation in Tallahassee. Luckily, that is already worked out and I should be there Saturday or Sunday.

Prayers for you. Praying that Christ healing power and comfort be with you. His grace is sufficient. Im sure you are fully aware of that🙏
I am. It’s been more vague then I would like to feel, but I do know that. It was kind of fascinating tonight. They needed a whole team to get me rolled just to try to clean me up, and one of the staff I have not seen before and won’t see again asked what happened. I told her. She just looked at me and said “and do you know your purpose?“ I pretty much knew what she was saying, but she just looked me in the eye and said if you’re still here after that there’s something left that you’re supposed to do and I really hope you find it soon. I’m finding it. Just need to walk first!

Man. That’s really sad news. Praying for your speedy recovery.

Look, just keep posting in the GOR threads, and get ready to pay up for our wager, and that's all I care about..... ;-).
I am sure I will be very active in any relevant thread. Don’t have a whole lot much more to do for a while. I do need you to remind me what our bet is. Thus won’t turn me into a welsh!

Oh, I was just joking! I'm sure, one day, you'll look at this as a blessing. Prob not today though.

Sooner you can move, the better, I'd imagine.

I did not take your intent badly. I am doing everything I can to keep my spirits and humor up. It makes all the difference. You were absolutely right, but the moving Hass to be at a physically possible level. Right now we are talking millimeters a day, and as I said, a full three months of completely nonweightbearing. Although work we will do is on getting me to be able to move myself around a bed, role, and hopefully within a few weeks, be able to slide onto a commode or things like that. Some of this is complicated by the fact that they left arm is badly broken. My nurses before shift change just left and were mentioning that they think I am already kind of ahead of the curve. I think really from my hip standpoint I could get a lot more done, but the hole in my knee is just absolutely unbearable pain and I can’t bend it all the way. If we can get that healed up I think I can really work well with the hips.

Wow! Yeah man He loves you and definitely left you here on purpose. But like you said..”you gotta walk first”. Hang in there man!

Sorry to hear about the accident but glad you're on the road to recovery. I deal with people that have had a lot of bad accidents and as bad as it seems the motivated ones can make a pretty damn good recovery. Just keep pushing yourself. Hopefully that lady had a nice umbrella policy.

Jeez bud I'm sorry to hear, and I hope you are able to recover quickly. Luckily you are still with us and it sounds like you are in good spirits.

10 years ago from October I was in a bad car wreck as well. It took years of in-patient and out-patient rehab and therapies to get me physically and cognitively ready for the rest of life. Those were trying times for me, my friends and my family. I say that to tell you that in the decade since, I've had the best moments of my life and for my future. I'm sure you see a mountain in front of you, but please be patient, no matter how tedious and difficult things seem. Recovery is a slow path, but it will also be a rewarding one not just for you but for the people who you care about and who care about you.

Please send occasional updates. I'm wishing you the best, friend.

Wow that sucks. I’m actually doing well. We will have ups and downs but when multiple docs both say they’ve never seen this level of pelvis injuries and surviving, then telling you after each surgery that they are really happy with the results, and the PT is saying you’re ahead of many normal cases, I’m focusing on ups. It helps some with what I do bc I know a lot more what to expect. I will celebrate victories but I won’t let the down times get to me too much.
Didn’t know your history. So glad you got through it all. I’m lucky. Death, paralysis, tbi were all on table. Ortho stuff will improve. Could have been so much worse.

I’ll be around annoying folks a long time.

Thank you for your kind words.

You have the right mindset for sure! The downs will come, unfortunately, but don't let them consume you. You may not be able to do something you were hoping to do at a certain point in time. Just acknowledge it and try to do better next time. Chances are you will.

I won't go into detail about my incident on the public forum but if you ever want to chat about it either cause you are bored while recovering or need some encouragement then feel free to shoot me a pm and we can talk there.

You know…things like this make me think I need to stop complaining when I think I’ve had a “bad day”…had to work late, traffic, some silly thing didn’t go my way….thank you Dhersh for sharing this with me/us…

She was driving a dodge sedan I think. Passenger car. I was driving an infinity. I will be getting a big truck when I can drive again.

In other news I’m waiting on transport to Tally now. Won’t be fun but I need to get there and I don’t need to be in trauma center now. They might do more surgery.
