A married 23-year-old North Carolina teacher has been arrested after police say she “engaged in a relationship with a 17-year-old student.”

Katherine Ross Ridenhour, of Concord, was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a student, the Concord Police Department said in a press release. They also view the female perpetrators as crazy or confused — not vicious — and their victims as “actually getting lucky.” Also, many state court judges are elected, so they want to announce sentences that they think voters would like to hear.

Great question, and not sure. Doesn’t seem like the equal rights movement had any effect on this “disparate penalties” situation, so i question whether the “me too” deal will change it either. I think people (judges) have deep-seated beliefs that a 15-17 year old boy nailing the teacher is actually the boy’s lucky day. When a 15-17 year old girl gets tagged by a male teacher, there are images of forcible rape and general creepiness.

It is all part of our social conditioning. Just not sure that these private sexual and social beliefs will be changing any time soon. If i were representing a male defendant I could make a hell of an equal protection argument that my guy also deserves the same gentle treatment given to his female counterparts.
