Another FSU Greek Issue

These guys are so young. How on earth do they get into that business at their age? I openly admit ignorance of the inner-workings to coke dealing. Like how did they get introduced to it? Was it something they found once they got to FSU or something they brought to FSU. Is this happening with other Greek and on campus organizations? Is it really possible to keep something like that quiet in this day and age what with so many people connected to pretty much everything at all times?

Another FSU Greek Issue:

I had an awful pita at lunch today. Think they used mayo instead of Tzitziki. But I digress.

There is zero, and I mean ZERO, decent Greek food in Tally other than getting pastries imported from Tarpon Springs at the Tally Greek food festival. I wait until I’m back in the Tampa Bay Area (but especially Mr Souvlaki and Hellas in Tarpon Springs) to eat Greek.

Eh, I will say I haven’t bothered trying Papa’s Diner yet and I have heard good things about it. But that’s good things coming from the same people who think Sahara, Captain Pete’s, Pitaria etc... are somehow decent.

Would be interested to know where this young man is from. Some of them arrive in Tallahassee already “involved,” and then their exploits progress (or deteriorate) from there. Sad.

Of the FSU undergraduates, 22% belong to a Greek organization, that’s 7,588 students for the 2017 school year.

2 ÷ 7,588 (active only) = 0.026% = Freaking Epidemic

Shut it all down. Burn it to the ground. The underprivileged need dates too.

Quality

There was a lot of blow being sold and consumed through the fraternity of my roommates... Not all were participating, but it was very known and accepted of the ones who were.

Who knows what is going on; but regardless it is evident the FSU administration is a aware of a number of issues that appear to have been going on long enough for federal LE to be involved. I never understood the frat thing, but I am sure for some people it is a great experience and has a number of benefits. One thing is certain this is not good for FSU and especially frats. While there is no doubt this is likely limited to a few people and at worst a few frats; however in America today these type of things tend to paint all with the same brush.

It sounds to me like Thrasher is just asking the leadership of the fraternities and sororities to start enforcing their espoused ideals. The current issues are examples of failed leadership by the local FSU chapters. They need to self-police. He is just asking fraternities to shape up their leadership and start governing themselves like they are supposed to do under their stated values.

For example, here's Pi Kappa Phi's "core values":

Common Loyalty
A commitment to Pi Kappa Phi that transcends any personal selfishness.

Personal Responsibility
The expectation that you live both your personal values, as well as those espoused in the Fraternity’s Ritual of Initiation.

Achievement
The expectation that you find your passion and excel.

Accountability
The duty to uphold and abide by the Fraternity’s standards of conduct and to use Ultimate Respect when confronting brothers who fail in their obligations to Pi Kappa Phi.

Campus Involvement
The obligation to become engaged in the college or university community.

Responsible Citizenship
The duty to lead and the privilege to serve others in order to better the world around you.

Lifelong Commitment
The obligation to remain involved in Pi Kappa Phi after graduation and to work perpetually to build the ideal fraternity.

And here are their "student creed values":

Common Loyalty, Personal Responsibility, Achievement, Accountability, Campus Involvement, Responsible Citizenship, Lifelong Commitment.

The ban on Greek Life puts the onus on the local FSU chapter leaders to submit a plan of action to the FSU administration that assures this crap gets under control and taken care of by the people who purport to be leading these local chapters.

Again, good for Thrasher.

I was incredibly active in my fraternity and the FSU Greek scene in general.

I was also 30 years old before I saw cocaine in person for the first time.

NMHC Annual Meeting in Boca?

If this was true, why didn't you make an anonymous tip to the police?

Man, the frat boys are going neck-and-neck with Fisher on who is having the most difficult fall season. Hate to read all of this.

Unless you know something about Fisher that I am not aware of, this is not a neck and neck situation, not even close.

I was incredibly active in my fraternity and the FSU Greek scene in general.

I was also 30 years old before I saw cocaine in person for the first time.

Anecdotal evidence is anecdotal.

That's crazy...I had the opposite experience. I'm glad to know that it wasn't everywhere.

Several freshman were arrested in either the fall of 86 or spring of 87 for the same thing. One of the ones that got in trouble, not sure if he was buying or selling, was from our dorm at Gilchrist hall. The kid was great on the guitar and could play anything from memory and was an all around good guy. It was a damn shame he got caught up in that mess.

Saw cocaine once in person. A high school friend came back from the marines with it.
I did hear stories from my daughter (fsu '17) about one of her acquaintances who had been partaking.

I was president of Phi Delta Theta back in 1997, and was involved in most aspects of Greek Life back in those days. I can tell you that I never once saw cocaine while I was a student at FSU. I also didn't run with the crowd of folks that did it. That's not to say that none of our members ever used cocaine, but they certainly didn't do it in the house, or if they did, they kept it well hidden. Had they ever been caught by me, they would have been gone. Period.

Like most things, I think fraternities are a microcosm of greater society. When you're talking about a group of 100+ men, there are going to be some that don't think the rules apply to them. We had guys that were there just to party, and plenty that were there to take advantage of the leadership and networking opportunities as well. Overall, most of the guys that I was in school with have gone on to great success in life, even the ones that I thought were complete knuckleheads. We have doctors, lawyers, businessmen and just about everything in between. Overall, I am very proud of all of them and the lives they have built for themselves. My very best friends in this world are guys I got to know at Phi Delt.

I saw cocaine around FSU occasionally as a student, but the first time I went to a party at UCLA and saw a literal mound of cocaine on a desk, Tony Montana-style, blew my mind.

You were my El Presidente. Yea, most of the guys that I keep up with from FSU are Phi's and it's true, a few toaked on the Devil's lettuce, but that's about it. Except the time that Doug got ruffied and ended up in the Talbot "Sandy" D'Alemberte's bed, remember that?

We had like 140 guys by the time I left school, that is a big group of knuckleheads to police.

Alternate anecdote...

I was not really involved in greek life when I was in college, and I saw lots of cocaine (as well as weed, acid, mushrooms, etc...).

I'm not sure that it's got anything to do with the fraternities. A few kids - no matter the group - are going to do what they're going to do.

I'm by no means "pro-greek", but a couple of kids selling out of the frat house doesn't mean the whole system is rotten. Even when combined with the kid that died, it seems like an over-reaction to me. Suspend the one frat where all this happened, and maybe implement some additional awareness seminars or something, but to me this overshoots the landing.

Apparently some of you have never hung out with doctors or Dolphins in Miami. I’ve done both.

Yeah I’m not sure where all of these Mormon and Amish posters were hanging out and doing but I saw it in multiple places while at FSU. The only common denominator was it was always people who were from Miami or New Orleans.

Just off the top of my head, 1) I know a couple of people on the rugby team I knew who did cocaine on the semi-regular all three from Miami, 2) a couple of flutes in the Marching Chiefs did it before at least a couple of games, 3) a girl I dated for a short time in Smith Hell from New Orleans would try to coerce me into partaking of her stash, 4) at least one of the assistant editors at the Flambeau when I was writing there would try to get me to take a bump after hours with her and she was from Miami, 5) I was in a public speaking class with a LBer we all know and who went to the NFL and for his “factual speech” about himself he told everyone in class he would take a bump before each game and vomit to get up and if he thought he was too up he’d smoke a joint to moderate....again in class in the open, 6) I saw it in multiple frat and non frat parties at FSU especially those who had musicians involved and I just assume all Miami or Nawhlins people doing the supplying.

And I’m a total teetotaller other than enjoying a responsible level of beer, wine and liquor. I’m the opposite Bill Clinton, I never purposefully smoked even a joint but my football playing roommate had our room in such a constant state of thick cloud I’ve been hotboxed high plenty back in the day. So I question the honestly of some of the pearl clutchers. Because as boring as I am as a person and never once purposefully took even things as mild as tobacco and marijuana, I have seen PLENTY of coke and pill use/abuse. I knew some people who admitted using lsd and heroin but never saw it in person.
