Not technically into the community, but I've perused some of this stuff. I'm on board with the premise. Starting our family very young and needing to get three kids raised and through college limits what we've been able to do, but we're 45 and our youngest just started high school, and we're hard focused on being able to basically quit our careers as they stand when he gets done with college in eight years, by 55.
I started retirement savings too little too late (needed every dime for too long), but have been accumulating at a pretty decent rate the last 7-8 years, and my wife has just gotten back in the real work force in a pretty big way.
I'm not going to compile a pile that will guarantee life of luxury, but the main tenets of what we're trying to accomplish are:
1) Debt free. We're not carrying any meaningful debt besides mortgage, nor letting our kids accumulate undergrad debt
2) Modest lifestyle. Our needs are fairly pedestrian. We'd like to do a little traveling, but generally do not have expensive tastes in entertainment or lifestyle.
3) Doing some kind of light work. Not trying sit around all day, we'll still do SOMETHING, whether it be contract/consulting in our fields, or driving Lyft, or something. I just don't want to be a 60 year old in the rat race. Hell, I don't want to be 45 year old in the rat race, but patience.
4) Small additional income stream. Property or other investment that will generate a little bit. We've got to get on this part in the next year or two.
My plan was always to sell our home in 10 years, and take the proceeds to buy a small place outright so no mortgage or rent. If we do that, our expenses are shockingly low compared to life now with three kids, two in college. It would not take much to get out of the rat race and still get by. I'm not sure if that will pan out now...I like where we live, and I'm not sure I'll find something I'd be as happy with, and it won't be anywhere near paid off.
