Any Orthos in the LR?

So about 4 weeks ago, playing soccer, my right knee buckled and twisted in a non-contact manner. I felt and heard the dreaded popping noise.

I went to my ortho the next day, and he ran his series of tests saying it was likely nothing major with some internal derangement, a stretched PCL/MCL, and some meniscus damage.

Flash forward 4 weeks and I was feeling nearly 100%. I had been back in the gym. Started strengthening it and began jogging a week prior.

So last night, I was jogging at the local park and in mid jog, I felt it give out again. It buckled and popped and the pain was immediately pretty terrible

The exact region of pain on my right knee now is completely different than where it was originally 4 weeks ago. The pain is quite bad and it's located behind the knee on the outside of my leg that radiates down my leg into/near my calf area when I put any pressure on it.

Been on bed rest today and going to see the ortho again tomorrow as he isn't in on Thursdays. Just wanted to see what -- if any -- here thought I could have done last night.

Sounds like this might make a hat trick. May be a strain, sprain, or tear of the LCL if your knee was overcompensating for the MCL weakness. At least your ACL hasn't been damaged yet (knock on wood).

Disclaimer: I am not an orthopedic surgeon, but I did once read a hilarious thread where a poster claimed he was a prominent doctor at Duke University.

Remember the days when an MRI was known as exploratory surgery?
I certainly do. I used to work for a ortho group here in Tallahassee for many years. It is amazing the advancements in scanning technology over the years.

I heard the dreaded pop about 7 years ago-- it was a torn ACL. I will never forget that noise and me falling over in a heap.

I guess the pop could be something else but as others have mentioned you should go back and get the MRI. In the mean time, ask for a good knee brace-- there are some good ones out there that will help stabilize it. If its a tear you are in for a long haul of surgery, recover and therapy. Good luck. Keep us posted...

I would change to another Ortho. The fact he basically blew you off with "it's nothing major" and sent you home without even an X-ray says a lot.

No necessarily, an X-ray would not show ligament damage and the drawer tests are diagnostic tests to rule out a tear.

Well he still blew it and let the op go home and hurt himself even worse now. With all the ligaments around the knee, why not order the mri to be safe? I wouldn't go back there.

Oldest daughter went down in college showcase tournament. Taken to ER, ER doc says MCL sprain at worst. MRI, complete ACL rupture.

That's what I'm saying. Op was sent home with a false sense of security and most likely needs surgery now. I wouldn't let that Ortho get paid for it.

I've had more than my share of the arthogram (sp?). My worst knee injury resulted in the doctor taking half of my iliotibial band and routing it through the knee like a shoestring to replace the ACL, MCL and PCL. Pretty bizarre, but still works 30+ years later.
