Despite the first half struggles, I was encouraged by the win as a whole! Firstly, the offense had no rhythm at all until the second half. At all positions there were errors, drops, false starts, bad throws, miss blocks, etc. These things will clean up over the season, and as the team gels we will find rhythm. Growing pains, I'm not worried...bro.
Secondly, this defense looks like it can hold its own. I feel it's more dynamic than last year's D's, and also more reliable. I didn't think I'd see Sweat out there as much, and Derwin James flew in for that sack - awesome! USF's 3rd down efficiency wasn't because off drop balls or false starts...it was us.
It's going to take a few games to get going, but when this team clicks, I think it's hard to stop. Mavin's going to catch that TD pass over two defenders. Derwin will debone someone this season. Though, I'm a little worried about Martinez against elite DT's, but overall encouraged....especially since we have DALVIN THE GREAT running the ball. So all to all you DUFFS out there - go drink one!!
