I went to Lake Placid to support a buddy who did the full Ironman last weekend. It was pretty cool. They had a 72 yo competing in his first ever. Old man finished with 10 minutes to spare, but he did it. Looked like he was done, nothing remaining.

I hate the gym, but like to get out and just do stuff. I've done a couple sprint tris years ago before kids. Kind of got the bug again after watching his race, so going to set a goal of a half or an Olympic for mid next year.

Anyone into Tris? Any tips on how to get over really hating running?

Between November 2016 and October 2017 i did 1 sprint, one Olympic, and 2 half Iron mans IM 70.3 FL and IM 70.3 Miami. I will tells you I have always hated running but after all the training associated with what I did during that time period I really took a great liking to running. My biggest advice would be to get a a bike trainer and look into an online training program (bike training program ) called Trainer Road ). My second half Ironman went so much better on the run because I was better prepared on the bike.

P.s. make sure you get in open water swim practice. The difference in a sprint open water swim and a half Ironman is significant. Swimming in a one person lane in a pool does not compare to the washing machine like craziness that happens in an open water swim

I'm just getting into them. I doing a half in Chattanooga next year. My wife has been doing triathlon for a few years. My advice, get a good bike, a coach, and training buddies. Lastly focus hard on your nutrition.

So.... looking at trying to do a sprint this fall just to do it. We are talking about a half in St Louis next summer as well. Bike, yeah, need a new one. Coach, DEFINITELY need a running coach, I suck. Totally see the upside to training buddies, I am sure there are plenty of groups out here. I expect to be irregular for a while in my schedule. Nutrition? Don't you exercise so you can eat whatever you want? :)

Man, I hope I can get to a point where I don't hate running. First run tonight, lots of work to do and need to get back into my PT regimen, knees only bother me when I run so its a reason not to. Now I am. I will look into the bike trainer program. Did you use that instead of the Garmin Forerunner watch? Or what did you like so much about Trainer Road? I need a new cycle computer for the bike, old cheap on died.

I LOVE the swim, wish it was longer and last. :) I saw pictures of the swim start they used to do at the Lake Placid, everyone in all at once. Definitely a washing machine. I did one sprint years ago in Destin, growing up and swimming open water is a huge advantage, didn't phase me at all. But the bodies on top of bodies was definitely something you can't simulate. I wish we had more open water here I could practice in, you are very right, pools just don't do it. Going to do an open water swim in 3 weeks, water temp is 68 right now. Test out the old suit and see if it still works.

I had a friend do the full IM last year in Panama City. I was drained from going to the Syracuse game, having the wife drive us to PC after the game and drinking along the running course until almost 10 PM. No way in hell am I doing all that over 17 hours.

I love bike riding, running and swimming. I’m just not competitive enough to care where I would finish in any of the races though. Thus I never did a triathlon. The guys that do these races are in incredible shape. I just do the three because I enjoy it.

On a side note, I watched some of the Tour de France over the last few weeks. Bike riding is cool. My son can’t figure out why I like watching it... oh well.

I did a couple sprint tris about 5 or 6 years back. My problem is the swim. I'm a sinker not a swimmer. Out of about 400 people at my first one, I was 5th slowest in the swim. I thought I was going to die. I've got a friend that does a few iron man tris every year.

I wouldn't try eating everything in sight. Eat clean, train hard, then drink beer

It's not uncommon for people to gain weight when training because they think they can eat whatever they want and will all "burn off".

My wife did a Sprint three months after she had our son, she's an animal. I'm standing there holding a three month old cheering while my wife is competing, what a loser lol
Seriously though, she swam in college and has always been a runner. She struggles on the bike, but being good at two of three means she generally finishes very high in her age group.

I tried a couple sprints after college but I sux at swimming even though I was a lifeguard in Daytona! Now I just race bikes like the TDF.

Good friend of mine did the Lake Placid too. He finished in the top 30 overall and qualified for Kona.

Wow, good for him! Quite the accomplishment! He must have been moving as a top 30 place would be about 10 hrs or so. That is moving. When my buddy was leaving the bike to run transition, I have pictures of him going out and one of the women leaders @ halfway through the run. The top competitors are impressive!

Your buddy going to do the Kona?

Yes he is. He has qualified for Kona before too, but didn’t do as well there.

Yeah he moves. We did a marathon relay together and he literally didn’t break a sweat.

Looking at the 2017 and 2018 times, it looks like less favorable conditions overall this year than last for some reason. He finished under 10 last year.

So this year was an updated course apparently for the bike and run. I heard a couple people say they felt it was a touch more difficult. The weather was almost perfect. Little drizzle about 2-4 but not terribly hot and mostly overcast.

Sprints are pretty cool; doing a full on Iron man is just painful and not really good for your body. The training alone is life consuming.

People get divorced for any number of reasons, but I have heard tales of people splitting because one partner is gone 16+ hours each week to train. No thanks.

Watched this documentary. It will leave you thinking iron mans are easy and everyone should be able to do at least one.

Worth the watch. It’s on Amazon Prime.

Had a friend who was an avid runner (he passed away a couple years ago); he ran every - and I mean every day. He ran at least 5 miles every single day for over 24 years (over 8800 consecutive days), including running full marathons in all 50 states.
I'm sure Tribe would know of him, as would most anyone who grew up in Pasco, Hernando, Sumter, or Citrus Counties & is over the age of about 30. He was a well-known high school coach (baseball, basketball, track, softball - pretty much coached everything through the years), and is in the Florida sports hall of fame for his coaching success.

Ernie Chatman. Oddly, he died of a heart attack at the relatively young age of 66, despite being in tremendous shape. I guess he should've eaten more fried foods & drank more beer while playing darts, pool and ping pong.

That is crazy.

I wonder if there could be a reverse effect on the heart if over exercised/working out the heart.

Maybe??

I've seen some studies indicating that is possibly the case.

I've heard a theory that it's linked to calorie consumption. To be obese for most of your life would qualify as a risk. However, to be fit/thin and consume/burn a lot of calories would also qualify.

Yes, absolutely. Over-exercise can lead to left ventricular hypertrophy and a decent number of very fit people die each year while running.

Just like a really serious weightlifter will probably have some scarred knees, so too with endurance athletes and the heart.

Yup, was talking to someone the other day in the medical world and there is real concern all these people who are getting hard into cross fit and other high intensity workout regiments are basically taking years off their body and many will start “breaking down” much earlier in life. I’m sure there will be a deeper look into this.

What I don't understand is why is there a gulf coast ironman after party at spinnaker beach club, knowing very well no one does all of that and then goes to the bar to drink jager bombs and any other type of alcohol afterwards

I don’t know about an IM, but the best part of my wife running a half marathon was the free beer I got after for her running.

I'm sure that it's different for triathlons, but most of the members of my former running club were hardcore beer drinkers. There was usually a keg and other things after the long runs.
