Taking the Mrs. to Asia next year for 2 weeks. We have only been to Beijing, Hong Kong and Phuket over on that side of the world.

I'm considering Japan (most of the visit), Taipei (a really good friend lives there now and will be our guide) and then Cambodia (Angkor Wat). Curious if people have been to any of these countries. We've done extensive travel in Europe and South American and I'm just convincing the Mrs. to check out Asia more.

I was in Japan for 10 days last year visiting my sister and her family. We went to Tokyo, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Mt. Fuji. We took the bullet train between cities and then urban rail all around each city. Awesome time. Incredible history and tradition, everyone was friendly.

I've done Thailand, Cambodia (Siem Reap), Vietnam, Malaysia, China and Japan. Just really depends on what type of travel you enjoy. I loved Tokyo and Kyoto and Mt. Fuji. But Vietnam and Malaysia were amazing for the adventure. Thailand for the service and China for the people watching.

You can easily spend two weeks in Tapai and Japan. Getting in and out of Cambodia is interesting, and in my opinion would not be worth the flight from Japan. But, it is an amazing place.

Amazing photos. How did you get around Vietnam and Cambodia? How would you recommend traveling over there first? Start in Japan as I can get direct there from Seattle or Detroit (flying Delta) and then make my way to other countries? Again, last time I was there it was Beijing direct from Detroit, then Beijing direct to Hong Kong and then Hong Kong direct to Phuket so it was relatively easily travel. I'm open to other countries but really want to check out Japan. Cambodia was simply chosen to see Angor Wat and go a bit off the grid.

Air Asia makes it pretty easy (and cost effective) to get around, though you usually have to fly thru one of their hubs (DMK - Bangkok or KL). There are a bunch of other regional carriors (Nok Air, among others) that are worth looking at.

Reserve a guide for Siem Reap - I have the number of a really good one, I'll have to dig it up - but no need to plan that more than 2 months in advance.

Vietnam it just depends, it was either cabs, buses or trains. The overnight train to Sapa was, um, interesting. If I had to pick between Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, or Malaysia, I would go to Vietnam again, and again. It will be quite the culture shock going from Japan to Vietnam though, it's a huge difference. Sapa is incredible. Halong Bay was very cool. Hanoi is an experience.

In Cambodia we hired a driver/guide each day for like $15. We enjoyed Angor Wat, but it was seeing the countryside in Cambodia, and meeting the people in and around Siem Reap that was the real treasure.
