Caught this documentary on HBO this weekend.

I had no idea Nuclear Waste was just dumped in random landfills.

The group they followed, Moms of STL were pretty unlikable, but the story was pretty interesting. I looked up and there are Superfund sites everywhere, found 4 near me. Nothing Nuclear, but old munitions sites. New Jersey has 115 in the state.

It struck home to me, seeing he connections between cancers and exposure to things you didn't even know where there, and how easily the stuff can spread via natural waterways. Crazy stuff.

New Jersey is a Superfund Site. In the early 90's not only were they near the top of the list in number of sites, but they also had something like 9 of the top 10 worst sites. It was an ongoing joke when I was at Rutgers that NJ was known as PA, NY or a big Superfund Site.

Apparently nothing has changed.

Grew up near Love Canal. Was always on the news...didn't realize until I grew up that it was a national story.

When I was about 20, went to a friend of a friend's girlfriend's house in Love Canal. Declared safe, about one in ten houses had someone living in it, the rest abandoned. Super eerie.
