So, I've seen the first Avengers flick, all be it 6 years ago, missed the second one, and I wouldn't mind catching the third one. Is the backstory such that you'd be lost? Or, is it essentially all of the Marvel super heroes battling an evil dude and that's all you need to know?

Necessity to see Ragnoronk and Black Panther first? Been thinking I should hold off until I catch up on those two, but haven't given thought to the easiest way to catch them soon so I'm not way behind on the talk about Infinity War I.

Don't think it's a necessity although you may be missing on some of the details you will see in this movie. I haven't seen ragnarok, so I am sure I missed something that this story picks up on related to Thor. And I will eventually watch Ragnarok, so I am sure when I do, I will be like OK so that part of this movie makes sense now.

So I am not sure it is a necessity to understand the story line from a high level. Although it is probably optimal if you want to understand the details behind what you see in this movie of what's going on or why they do certain things.

should be easy to find and watch prior to seeing the new one, civil war is a must see

I got through Ragnarok last week and Black Panther this past Wednesday. Both decent but underwhelming considering the hype. Middle of the pack MCU films.

I always figured that the Algonquin round table of posters that we have here would not have difficulties picking up the story of a comic book movie even missing one or two films. The same probably cannot be said for our friends on the Gator message board platform. Presumably there are several threads over there to help their members

Oh, I know there's enough interwebz resources out there to get caught up, but I'm the type to have to actually SEE the movie to get the full effect.

Just saw Infinity Wars and had no problem keeping up through the Black Panther bits even though I didn't see Black Panther.

I am pretty much clueless on these movies and saw Thor on a plane recently and had no idea what was going on, but enjoyed the mindless entertainment for what it was. Definitely felt I was missing some back story but it didnt take anything away from the overall film.
Are the xmen in this film or are they in a different universe or whatever its called?

Different universe.

I think you don’t have to see them all but do need to see some key ones to appreciate it. At a minimum, Guardians of the Galaxy I, Captain America Civil War and Thor Ragnarock would help a lot, and all are great films. More ideal path would be Thor, Avengers,, Avengers II, Guardians of the Galaxy I, Captain America Civil War, Thor Ragnarok, and Black Panther.

Saw it last night with son. We loved it. Nothing even close has been ever done in cinematic history in what they did with the marvel universe starting only 10 years ago with Iron Man. 19 movies, all tying into one another and closing on 16 billion total gross and 4 billion . And all with a huge number of A list actors of their time. This latest just set the new all time opening record.

My wife has not seen Black Panther, but had no issues following along with those parts.

Boy did they pull an Empire Strikes Back with that ending. Glad we only have to wait a year to see how the story goes.

The end of Thor Ragnarok flows right into the beginning of infinity war. Much of the action takes place in the same location as black Panther .. I'd recommend seeing those

So maybe try and take in Black Panther, then Ragnarok for the transition?
It would help, but isn't necessary.

I think seeing Thor is more important than Black Panther just to explain what's going on when the movie starts as it literally picks up right at the end of Thor and keeps going.

Black Panther would be nice since so much of the movie takes place there, but you're not going to miss too much if you don't (Although Black Panther is an amazing movie and you should see it anyhow).
