What's your go to system? I am mainly concerned about protecting the photos I have on my Mac. I have a backup drive and use the time machine function but have never had to actually back anything up or retrieve lost data so I am not 100% sure it would work if needed.

What I'm thinking of is a portable storage drive (in my mind, it would act like a huge thumb drive) that I could periodically download pictures to and that could be stored offsite, say at work. Just need to find something simple.

What are some solutions you all have come up with?

This is what I do. I have a crap ton of photos and am constantly adding to them. I keep them on an external hard drive because they wouldn't fit on my computer anyway. Then about once a month or two I back up that external hard drive to another external hard drive which I keep at the office.

I have an external hard drive that I have everything back up to just in case my main PC ever craps out.

I use a NAS with mirrored 3TB hard drives. There is also online storage usually for a fee. If you are not sure of a backup, delete some test files then restore from your external storage.

Network Attached Storage. Any computer on the network can have access to it. Mirrored hard drive are 2 hard drives acting as one. If one drive fails, you still have the other.

I’d suggest offsite redundancy as well, so a house fire, etc. doesn’t destroy your only copies.

I use Dropbox on all of my laptops and phones. It also gives me the ability to see pictures of my 18 month old daughter as my wife takes them without her having to send them to me. This is worth the $10 per month since I travel out of state every week for work. It also helps keep my phone from getting cluttered while continuing to give me access to pictures i take at work.

Physical hard drives have an expiration date. Dropbox is hackable which lead to savy types potentially accessing your computer.

Google and Microsoft offer online storage/backup. I think I get a TB or two each via my Gmail and Outlook accounts. There are several cloud based resources. Apple has had some issues - ICU Kate Upton and Jennifer Lawrence.
