Pete Rose's quest for reinstatement to baseball appears to have come to an end. Commish Rob Manfred has issued his findings and made his decision. Pete will never be employed by a major or minor league organization in his life.

Said Manfred, "In short, Mr Rose has not presented credible evidence of a reconfigured life either by an honest acceptance by him of his wrong doing, so clearly established by the Dowd Report, or by a rigorous, self-aware and sustained program of avoidance by him of all the circumstances that led to his permanent loss of eligibility in 1989."

So Pete can never again participate in the game that made him famous. Kind of sad really, for many of us who grew up watching the games in which "Charlie Hustle" would dominate. Just another example of how poor decisions can dog someone for the rest of their lives.

Couldn't be happier. I'm always reminded of Hank Aaron's comment watching Pete run out walks..."False hustle." And one of the sorriest at losing there was. I was at the game when Garber struck him out to end the hitting streak, and his demeanor on the way back to the dugout, as well as in the post game presser, was pure Pete--"All about me".

Never liked him, and never will. Deserves what he got.

My somewhat amusing Pete Rose/HoF story:

In the early 90s thru 2000, I served on the city commission in my hometown. At one point, we'd canned our city manager & were going through the process of hiring his replacement. One of the five finalists was a guy who'd previously been the city manager of Cooperstown. At the tail end of his interview, I jokingly threw this out to him - "So, Pete Rose - in the Hall or not?" He kinda leaned back & stammered a little, obviously uncomfortable with how to respond. I laughed & said "No, don't answer - I'm just joking & figure you've heard a lot of arguments about it." He laughed & said "well I'm glad you aren't going to make me answer but yes, it's always a hot topic there. The guy who was the mayor while I was there is vehemently opposed to letting him in; another commissioner is a big Rose supporter. There's a city park right across the street from the Hall; the Rose fan brought forward the idea of putting at the entrance to the park a statue of Rose, sliding head-first into home plate. The mayor shot it down, saying he could support it on one condition - that they add to the statue an ump standing over him, signaling OUT."
