best site for booking airlines?

Usually Kayak. I'll also check Allegiant directly as they do not sell on the middleman websites only direct.

Use the airline website and monitor the flight even after purchase. I have tickets to Aruba in July direct from BWI and the price has dropped three times. They won't refund the difference but I received credits that I can use on my next flight. It's a game.

travelocity....I was amazed at how much cheaper they were than the airlines.

And I always check the airline site after I get a price from Travelociy to be sure.

Never tried Kayak or Google Flights

There are times that the airlines site will have discounted rates that don't show up on the discounted travel sites.

Kayak, and then, before booking, double check directly with airline's website.

Add another vote for google.com/flights have booked my last 3 flights through the airline site via Google and had been significantly cheaper.

Additionally, I think that google has a contract to be in the databases of the airlines, as any glitch in pricing shows up there too. Haven't heard about such glitches making their way to Orbitz/Expedia/kayak/etc.

Never tried Kayak

It perplexes me why anyone would ever do anything BUT google flights.

The ONLY reason not to use it, is if there is an error fare that got fixed, but is still cahed by orbitz or expedia, and they have to honor it.

If it just takes you to the airline site to book, why not just go there in the first place?
Can you see seat availability on Google flights?

I have never booked a flight off Kayak. It always takes me to the airline's website.

Because that's not all Kayak does. It pulls up all of the other middlemen websites (like Travelocity, Orbits and Priceline) and the airlines plus it's own prices and then gives you all of the results so you can pick the cheapest. It doesn't even select itself most of the time, I've used it for probably hundreds of hotels in the past five years and more than a few flights and it probably selects its own service as cheapest 15% of the time.

Good luck if you need to change a flight and book off Kayak or Travelocity.

They go by the same policy that the airline you are flying has.

They can then credit if they like to their account. We had a client back out the day before I had trip. The airline was going to charge a large fee to cancel. I called travelocity told them the situation and they gave me a full credit for my next purchase. Only catch was that the credit had to be used for that airline.

So using them worked to my advantage that day.

I heard, on one of the weekend radio talk shows, that by using different web browsers, gives you different prices. I haven't tried this to confirm it, but it came from a reputable source.

Thats true. Also recently read you should clear your browser and search histories and reset every so often while Flight searching.

Am I the guy getting soaked by the cookie monster in this one?
It's my favorite of the Kayak commercials and as soon as I saw the thread I knew I was going to post the gif. I just looked for a Kayak related comment to reply to, so yes, you were.

I always use private or incognito browsing when searching for travel. I've also heard that using a proxy will net you different prices, but haven't tried it myself.

Searching during the middle of the week usually shows lower prices.

I just purchased 4 airline tickets. I shopped a gazillion websites- expedia, cheapoair, Travelocity, priceline, travel zoo, kayak, orbitz, trip advisor, seat guru and the list goes on...
The cheapest I could find for the tickets and destination I needed? Southwest. What's funny is you can't buy Southwest tickets off any of those sites and yet they were still by both a little and a lot cheaper than the other airlines. I looked at Allegiant but they only fly certain days and only to a handful of cities.
Just from my recent experience,I have no idea how those orbitz type companies exist. Even the Delta prices all those sites were giving me weren't as low as the actual Delta website.Delta was the next cheapest after Southwest.
Maybe mine was out of the ordinary?

I never book anything except directly from the company's website. Airfare, rental car, hotel etc. I use other sites to search for the best price, but I couldn't imagine trying to settle a dispute when booking through a third party website with no customer service. When booking a recent trip to Europe, I found google flights the easiest by far to compare prices and quickly see the price effect on changing dates.

I usually use an aggregator like Kayak to find best prices, and then buy off the airline website. Also check with Orbitz and Expedia type websites to see if I can get a better rate. Allegiant works in rare cases.

This is what I do as well. I use kayak for my car rental too.

google flights is nice because the interface is very easy to change dates, cities, etc to see what is available. you can then book direct from Delta or whoever. the interface makes it very easy to adjust your itinerary to save money, find shorter flights, etc.

Agree.
Only exception is I will use booking.com for hotels. Saves time searching, the prices are generally the same and the cancellation policies are based on the hotel's policies.
