Threads of late have me wondering...

For my tastes, it's SRV by a long shot - but I love blues music, and SRV is one of my two favorite guitarists (the other being Terry Kath).

But that doesn't mean that I don't recognize Knopfler to be a great guitarist, because he certainly is.

It is impossible to choose between the two because what they do is so different. They are both excellent technical players but that do not let their technical expertise get in the way of or act as a substitute for real expression. Stevie was obviously steeped in southern blues. Mark also has a blues foundation, but more Piedmont blues rather than delta blues. He also draws from a broader range of influences, such as Celtic. Stevie is flashier and louder. I do not mean that as insult, because that was nature of the music he played. Mark's style is much quieter due to his finger-picking technique, but he can be flashy too.

Ijust read biographies on Clapton and Hendrix and In the middle of a SRV biography. Have been listening to a lot of music by all 3 lately. SRV is my favorite guirarist. Too bad he left us so young. I've seen Clapton 4x and he's not bad but nog SRV. I've also seen Knopfler 2x. Totally different style. Good but not close to SRV.

But for this poll, you can only pick one. So pick...

Exactly. Totally different styles but both are/were excellent players. If you asked what style I preferred I would most like go with Knofler. But SRV was a very good player.

LOL at “Clapton’s not bad”. You got that right

Glad I got a chuckle ;) It was said tongue in cheek. The three are all great :) Hard to believe with what he put his body through he's still with us!

Uhm, I kinda thought I did when I said "For my tastes, it's SRV by a long shot"
Lol. Glazed over the first paragraph. I shouldn't post at work when I'm so preoccupied...

Knopfler for me. Very underrated IMO. That's doesn't mean I don't think SRV is terrific.
