Big news in the world of gambling (sports betting)

Interesting ruling. However, don't expect much change here in Texas. The state seems perfectly content with losing tax revenue to Louisiana.

Very interesting. I am curious to see how it plays out. I would guess NJ will be first to make substantial changes in the way of Sports Books in their existing casinos. Not sure how, if at all, my betting will change though.

I'm sure the casinos in Biloxi will add sports books, so that will be a welcome addition for something to do over there.

I quit online sports betting a long time ago after i had an epiphany that trying to make a 4 game parlay on Sunday to break even after getting killed on Saturday was not a healthy habit.

It opens the doors for states that want sports betting, and that is my favorite kind of gambling. My favorite thing in Vegas is the Sports Book

i assume a variety of casino owners will be fairly happy about this.

in all honesty, good decision. too many puritanical socially prohibitive and protective laws around these american parts. hopefully marijuana laws tumble next, i'm sure when there's enough big business (read: campaign donors) behind it, they will.

Interesting side note, the Golden Nugget can't take bets on the Rockets v. Warriors because Tillman Fertitta owns the team.

Trying to tie the line on ‘political’ by hoping that means ‘partisan’, and that we can discuss government with the hammer falling.
Glad to see 10th amendment get to some due. A critical part of this American experiment is a federal framework in which States can do things differently, which I think gives us a better insight on what works well, and maybe not so well.

I like having a say in changing the laws where I’m at, and failing that the option to go somewhere where the laws are more accommodating to me.

Smart move to lay of those 4-teamers. I swear every first timer to Vegas hits a 4-team parlay giving them the false hope that "Gambling is easy" and then the proceed to get killed on parlays until they wise up. Happened to me when I was 21, my wife on her first trip and my brother on his first trip.

I used to work with a guy who had a preternatural ability to hit on parlays. He'd make several hundred dollars a week off of them it seemed. He was even adept at betting on baseball.

About time. I expect PA to be an early adopter, and I’ll be happy to give the local books my money. :)

honestly, a lot of these types of rules are ridiculous. I'm in favor of FL legalizing full casinos and then leaving it up to the local municipalities to determine if they want to allow it or not. It's always been ridiculous to me the moral laws we still keep in this country that aren't nearly as black and white as some people argue about. Where I live was still a dry county up until a few years ago. It was crazy.

Not just Louisiana but Oklahoma as well.

The stockholders in WinStar casino better be saving their money because someday when Texas legalizes casinos (it's a matter of IF not when) then WinStar and the rest of them will go out of business overnight.

I don't know if Texas will ever allow gambling. A couple years ago there was a huge push by several tribes and Fertitta and it seemed to gain a lot of momentum. The big selling point being look at all Texas tax dollars that the Okies and Cajuns are collecting when Galveston could be turned into the Las Vegas of the south. I spoke with a guy familiar with the behind the scenes politics and I said that it looked like Texas might be changing -- he said just wait until Louisiana/Oklahoma and the Southern Baptist lobby dumps money into the anti-gambling movement. Any bill won't even make it out of committee.

The state of Florida likes gambling. At least South Florida. I am ready for some Sport Books.

John Boehner recently was named to the board of a big MaryJane outfit. Just a matter of time, but hopefully big pharm, tobacco, and alcohol get shutout. They would deserve that after leading the prohibition charge.

Luckily the great state of West Virginia cares nothing about the well-being of its own people, and they're already pushing through a law to facilitate another way for their poor to further tax themselves. I'll have sports betting within about 20 minutes of my house.

You ever go to the track at Charles Town? Me and some college buddies had a blast there a few times back in the day. It was good cheap entertainment.

That's where I live near. We've been a few times for the horse racing and had a good time.

I've walked through the casino but at the time, the Maryland casinos hadn't opened, so Charles Town had a monopoly and the table limits were all pretty high - like $25 minimum blackjack in the middle of the week. I think they're lower now since the MGM has opened up at the National Harbor.

Some of us at work are planning to go there for a poker tournament one weekend.

Good luck. Clean up!
Nice country around there. Lots of “newness” every time I go thru, but you know that.

I am betting the dog track/ poker rooms will be pressing to get state legislation enacted to get this in Florida legislation soon and I am sure the bible thumpers will be fighting for a law to pass to not allow it in Florida.

That would be perfect for me. I hope the Palm Beach Kennel Club gets it.

If Florida makes it legal, I expect them to have one opened in very quickly. It could be nice to have a giant sports bar/club connected to it with a bunch of TVs that basically has every sporting event playing and perhaps some private rooms available to be rented for game watch parties.

Disney and the Seminole Tribe will weigh in on this, very heavily. Will be interesting to see what happens. I sense that the Disney death grip is not what it once was.

Wouldn’t the Seminole Tribe stand to profit off this by incorporating sports books into their existing casinos?

Likely, but they would also no longer be the only game in town.

Yep. Last time I saw they were the wealthiest tribe in the country overall thanks to being the only semi legit casino resorts in Florida.

But per capita they are outmonied by this tribe in Minnesota where every individual adult gets a million dollars a year whether they work or not.

The Florida Seminole Nation isn’t much off the overall revenues per person but the tribe doesn’t dole out as much back to individual members.

Flipped on ESPN last night and holy hell, I didn’t care when everything was about fantasy this and that, but now every game score is going to discuss the spread? I’m about done...

I heard on the Bill King Show that New Jersey will have this available in about 48 days. Mississippi also has everything set up to start sports betting very soon in their casinos. This ruling did not come out of nowhere, and many were anticipating this and are ready to go with it.

There will be a handful of states ready to go. Most states won't visit the issue until next year when their legislatures return.

You are probably right. States like Mississippi and obviously New Jersey are ready to go very soon.

Yep. I read somewhere that the following states already have bills passed for it to be legal in the state once this decision came: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Mississippi and West Virginia.

14 other states had legislation introduced but not passed (I don't believe it indicated if they were voted on and failed or just simply not voted on). I don't think Florida was one of them, so it will be interesting to see the lobbyists come forward to get legislation introduced for a vote and how quickly that happens.

Florida is not one of them. Florida's legislature adjourned in March and won't return until March of 2019 unless there is a special session. There is a constitutional amendment on the ballot for November dealing with gambling. I don't know much about it, other than the Seminole Tribe and Disney are pumping big money into the battle.

..And we all know how quickly the state government moves to enact direct democracy mandates.

Mark Cuban had an interesting hypothesis that this ruling probably doubled the value of teams in the top four leagues. With technology and data capture as fast as it is right now, and the development of apps for in-game betting. He speculated that they will probably see a double digit (percentage) increase in attendance and television viewership and the game cast and information broadcasted during the game will structured for viewers that have an interest in sports gambling.
