My wife and I are thinking of sending our kids to NFC for middle school.

I am looking for thoughts on academics and management in general. Any other issues?

Any information is appreciated.

It doesn't have a good academic reputation.

Why are you thinking of forgoing Tally's excellent public schools for NFC?

Were it me, I'd take what I was as going to spend on NFC and buy a (potentially more expensive) house in Deerlake or Montford school zones.

Honestly the reputation in Tally is pretty bad...."Rich Druggies" is how their student population is referred too

My first two started there. They are 18 and 20 now, for time reference. I was concerned about academics very early on. I knew by the time my son was in first grade that he would not attend high school there because Chiles is so far ahead academically. By the time he was in third grade I saw things about NFC that were so contrary to the very reason I had my kids there (values) that I moved them both to KLES and have been in the NE public schools since. I have never regretted it.

There are a few things that really bother me about NFC. One is that it typifies what many complain about sports. The football players there are treated like little gods. It's funny that this happens there given the religious nature of the school. I love football, but I have no interest in it being a religion of its own. The second is that as the kids get older, more and more troubled kids end up there. NFC is often where people send their kids when they are getting in a lot of trouble elsewhere. NFC is not equipped to provide those kids any better a situation than any other school, but they end up being moved there together.

The simple fact is I don't think NFC provides kids anything they can't get in public schools, it can't provide anything close to what the public school can offer. If your kids are at all academically gifted, they will rot at NFC.

You can save the tuition you would spend and put it in a fund for your kids' college expenses and be much better off.

Don't know much about NFC, but that experience is not uncommon. When I was in public school, the religious schools in our area were where all the kids who'd been expelled from public schools ended up.

Where I live now, the religious schools tend to excel in sports - but the rap is they recruit out of area schools quite heavily.

I'd never send my children to a faith-based school.

I would say that is not a fair statement in general. With the exception of St Thomas Aquinas I can't think of too many religious schools that excel in sports. Hell we didn't win a homecoming game the entire 4 years I was at Cardinal Gibbons. and JP2 in Tallahassee certainly isn't blowing the doors off people. With that said though, I've never heard anyone like NFC primarily because of who is running the ship there and the financial reasons behind it.

To echo the thoughts about academics my roomate teaches higher level math at Chiles and says that with few exceptions any student transferring from NFC is at minimum a semester and more likely more behind where his students are. The running joke among Tallahassee public school teachers is NFC = no f-ing chance

Pensacola Catholic has had some success in football and baseball, and some of the girls sports. The school does well from an academic perspective, and doesn't generally take kids that have been expelled from public schools. Most of the kids there come from the Catholic feeder schools. A few come to play football, though Catholic doesn't recruit.

This will be of no help, but I went there when I was 3... I hated it.
My teacher beat me w/ a paint stirrer every day. Ms Wilder. Awful.

Aside from Casey Weldon, there's not much that school has done that I know or care about.

I graduated from Chile's in 2006, for frame of reference

. Make of that what you will. They had a good but growing academic reputation while I was there. Before Chile's, it was Trinity Catholic. NFC had a sort of good reputation, but I knew the kids that lived across the street from us went there and they annoying as hell. Sorry; hope your kids aren't annoying Hahaha!

On the one hand the NFC access point jams morning traffic on Meridian; on the other hand I enjoy looking at the place as I drive by.

NFC grad here, I'd never consider sending my kid there. Academics were a joke and from what I hear, still are. I honestly can't think of any public school I wouldn't send my kids to over NFC.

For parents who are overly concern with "schools" please don't ! I suggest find a decent school in a decent neighborhood , public school is okay. Just be on top of things! No magnet school, just add more advance classes at "home" , some core AP classes in hs, discipline at "home" encourage friends at home & thenregular parenting stuff! Your influence will play a big role.! Proud & happy to say, my son went to public schools ( St. John's county) in Jacksonville, went to FSU for undergrad, a PI beta kappa, went UF hog town for Med School, now on his way to Georgetown in DC for residency. His new wife is the same, all public schools, then FSU then UF for Doctor in Nursing Practice. Go Noles , from a proud grateful Seminole Mom:)

Do some religious emphasis sports? Yes. Have we not recruited at Trinity Christian, small school near Jax. John Curtis is a Louisiana powerhouse. What about the Episcopal schools - Boselli, Coker? While some religious schools may have higher academics, there are common academic issues.

Still wondering what Runk retracted with his nm.
It was somewhat political and really had nothing to do with the original intent of the thread.
