My wife and I are looking at vacation options for a week of June . We would like to fly(non-stop) out of either NY or Newark, all-inclusive, preferably somewhere other than Aruba, Jamaica, DR, Cancun, Bahamas but would consider one of those if there was an awesome place. We probably would not be interested in doing many excursions but would love a place with good food.Thoughts?

I just booked a house in Grand cayman on Rum point for 11 days. Love it there...

Also, I think the Turks and Caicos (Provo) would meet your criteria

I am not sure about the non stop flights but have you looked at the Sandals resorts? One of my co-workers goes down there occasionally. I think she has been to St Lucia and Antigua but they also have resorts in Grenada and Barbados.

Any of the St. islands are great. Pretty sure there is a Sandals type place in the USVI.

For my money though, I would just hit up VRBO and get a place for cheap like Sapphire Beach on St Thomas. You can jungle cab it to Red Hook, chill on the beach at the condo, water taxi over to St John and Trunk Bay, and I think there is even one to the BVI. Spend a couple of hundred for food at the grocery store for the week to cover breakfast and lunch, then hit up all the local places for dinner. Off the Hook in Red Hook has some amazing food and all of it is fresh..

I'm quite partial to the Grand Caymans as well. Probably my second favorite place in the Carribean after the Yucatan peninsula as a whole.

Fly in to St. Kitts, take 2-mile water taxi to Nevis and stay at one of the old plantation inns. We always stay at Montpelier. Food on the island is excellent, the people are genuinely kind, and it is a good spot for exploring or just doing nothing.

Funny that you mentioned Sandals Grenada and Barbados, was just looking at those two. Never stayed at a Sandals before but have heard good service, decent food.

I like some of the ideas about buying food and renting a house, but wife wants all inclusive. Looking for something where we don't need to do much besides eat, drink and be lazy.

I don't know about the flights out of NYC but some places we look in to regularly are:
St. Lucia-Jade Mountain is our dream trip
BVI-Stayed at Long Bay and I believe they now have an all inclusive option. Would like to stay at the little place next to Soggy Dollar on Jost Van Dyke next time
Belize-English speaking country
Puerto Rico, but stay on the secluded islands of Vieaques or Culebra

I can't remember what island it's on but the newest Sandals resort (just opened withing the last couple months) is supposed to be amazing.

Editing to add Anguilla to my list

That little 5 room inn or whatever size it is, is the next place the wife and I stay for a vacation. I loved that bar.

Exactly. Would love to spend a week there. At last check it was pretty reasonable and the rates include two of the three meals, you're on your own for the other.

Fly to St. Maarten and take the water taxi to Anguilla (15 min). We stayed at the Viceroy, but anywhere on that beautiful island should be fine.

Just understand that the Caribbean -- other than the luxury resorts -- is largely a third world environment. Significant poverty lies behind the beauty you see in the advertisements. Jamaica, in particular, is horrible. Do your homework and do not reflexively jump at "bargains."

I'v been to the Caribbean more than a dozen times so I do understand that. Even with such conditions, there are a lot of nice places to vacation.

I currently live in Saint Lucia. Headed to grenada next. All are good islands. Ladera in Saint Lucia is killer. Saint Kitts and Nevis are sweet too.

vrbo and redweek are good options to get houses or timeshares at fractions of the cost of regular resort rates.

I did Sandals Grenada and we loved it. They had been open about 6 months at that time. The food is awesome there.

I'm a big fan of cruises as well. They are a dirt cheap way to travel (especially in the Carribean) and take you where tourists would want to go. (heck) some of the Carribean cruises are so cheap in Winter (when you SHOULD be going anyways, as 75-80 degrees and escaping freezing weather beats 100+ degrees and perfectly fine weather back home) that it's almost cheaper to go than to stay at home and eat. I've gotten great cruises on sale for $40-50 a day which when you factor in bed and decent food it is WAY cheaper than anything you could get in port that's safe.

Having said that, next December I think in addition to a cruise that I'm going to fly to Cancun for a week or so so that I can get to some of the out of the way pyramids and other sights.

Ha, I just posted that because earlier today on the radio I heard that old Caribbean Queen song by Billy Ocean, and that's how he pronounces it.

haha....I think this is something that should be posted in the "how you know you're getting old" thread....Listening to radio stations that play Billy Ocean.

It could also fit in nicely in the songs you hate thread. Oh, btw:

Settled on Sandals Barbados. Wanted to go somewhere I've never been and the resort just reopened in January 2015 after a $65M renovation. They were giving good credits so figured if not now, when?
7 nights with flights out of NY for just under $5k.

My aunt and Uncle own a plantation on Nevis called The Hermitage. It's amazing and highly recommend it.

Let us know how that turns out.

Just booked an 8 day all inclusive get away at Atlantis in the Bahamas. Did it last year and loved it. They have 15 restaurants on the resort that are world class, all inclusive. You and your wife would want to stay over in the "Cove" if you never been there. I wasn't up for many excursions last year but I did do a deep sea charter and some scuba diving. We just relaxed 85% of the time. The food there is awesome.

I've actually stayed there twice and loved it both times. The one drawback for me was the number of NYers there. Living in NY, part of a vacation is getting away from them lol

I'll definitely let you all know, looking forward to trying some place new.
