Please don't discuss the substance, but just a simple question.

Do you pronounce the city name with a hard "ch" as in "to char a steak," or is it soft like "sharlottesville?"

I have always heard the latter but many newspeople and pundits are pronouncing it the other way.

Who's right?

Haven't heard anyone pronounce it CHar (a steak).

It's obviously and definitely SHarlottesville.

Anyone who pronounces it that first way must be having a case of the mondays...or is an eclipse-denier.

That's my thinking too. I've heard it plenty the last few days, on a major network beginning with C and ending with N.

IMO, anyone who doesn't pronounce it like Shar is likely a Yankee or worse, from Cali. Not dissimilar to the S in Louisville or NO being a 2 word city.

The really difficult city names are in Virginia where Gloucester and Worcester are properly pronounced "Gloster" and "Worster".

And any good Tallahassean knows Havana Florida is pronounced Hay-Vanna while the one in Cuba is Huh-Van-uh and Cairo Georgia is pronounced Kay-row instead of the Kiy-ro in Egypt.

They got some screwy names in Texas: Gruene = Green; Boerne = Bur-nee; Bexar = Bear; Palacios = Palashish

Bowfort (like bow tie), NC, and Bewfort (sounds like pew) fort, SC.

I say Louie-vill. But I think the locals say Loo-val.

For New Orleans I usually say New Or-lans or NOLA. Locals usually say Nawhlins. And only Yankees say New Or-Leens or New Or-Lee-Anns.
Lou-ah-vul, kinda like how old school Floridians say Miam-uh.

I grew up in Tally and say New Or-Leens, but to be honest, I'm complimented by the yankee moniker, so I'll take that as a pat on the back - aside from the fact that I'm a sox fan.

I am in fact from Connecticut - the Yankee State - but I've lived in Florida since I was 12, so I'm hard pressed to prove that I'm much of a Northerner anymore at this point. 2 things I've retained from living in the New England though...I talk very quickly and I still say "wicked."

Both give me away as a Yankee, which I too find to be a compliment lest I be confused with or lumped in with Rednecks.

So why do slow talkers bother you?

Do slow typer's bother you too ?

Lol, the way that shows up, all the excessive spaces are removed, looks normal until I tried to quote it.

Slow talkers bother me because I tend to move quickly, whether in conversation or from point a to b.

And yes slow typers bother me too, in addition to folks who don't know keyboard shortcuts. It's like nails on a chalkboard to me -- that said, I'm always happy to politely teach someone so that I no longer have to suffer through their rookie antics (and they can be more productive in life).

You know what grinds my gears? Short video clips that take longer to load than they would for me to read, never mind how slow the presenter talks when it finally starts.

So, none of you have spent a substantial amount of time in See-Ville? That is the correct way to pronounce it. Now, we can move on to how to pronounce Monticello (Virginia or Florida).

Especially those traveling slowly in the left lane?

ha ha. I am with you though. Whether it is telling a story, making a decision or whatever I am the same way. I tend to process info quickly and then make a decision. It may be the wrong decision, but I will adjust. Solve the problem and move on; over thinking things and spending forever deciding on stuff drives me nuts.

Hmm not really, I rarely drive since I live in NYC. I guess slow cab drivers annoy me, but more specifically ones who are unsure of the best route. Cabbies know the city like the back of their hand but a lot of these uber folks are 100% reliant on navigation, which leads to some lollygagging since they can't memorize like 3 turns ahead.

Another thing I find bothersome, autoplay videos on websites. espin has long annoyed me and sadly warchant/rivals have recently joined that group.

Big decisions deserve an appropriate amount of deliberation but watching someone spend 10 mins debating what to order is mindblasting. I usually don't even decide until the waiter or waitress shows up and then I do a super rapid scan, pick something and hope I made a good choice. Don't sweat the small stuff.

I live just outside the circus known as Charlottesville, we have been here for six years. We mispronounced several words upon our arrival here including Monticello, Staunton and Rio Road, a major thorough fare. I would imagine they'll be changing the city name soon, considering it's named after a Queen promulgating monarchy, a power grab based on bloodlines. The major retail road is named Seminole Trail, which I'm sure annoys more than a few UVA people. Expect that to be changed as well, as to not offend any victims.

The best thing to come out of Charlottesville...

Bullet points in a PP presentation that repeat what the speaker is saying...either do a presentation or give me the bullet points to read on my own.

New Or Leens is used by some Southerners, but never New or-lee-anns
