Can someone explain this to me? At least once a day I see some woman in her car talking into her phone like it's a start trek communicator. Don't they know that a) they aren't on a reality TV show so no one else needs to hear the other side of the conversation and b) the phone works better 6" over by your ear.

So you think it's better for them to drive while holding the phone to their ear? You miss those rotary phones, don't you? :)

If they are in their car why does it matter to you? It only bothers me when they are in close proximity, in public. In the case of public phone abuse like this, I've as often seen men as the culprits.

Maybe the thought is it's safer than holding the phone to your ear.
my dad does this because he's hard of hearing.

I do this while driving at times. My blue tooth is broken in my truck and I think it's easier to talk this way. Now if you heard me ask someone to beam me up or something like that, then for sure it would be a head scratcher.

If you're going to be on the phone while driving, wouldn't it be safer to put the phone on speakerphone as opposed to having it by your ear? Using the speakerphone makes it easier to keep your head on a swivel and it's easier to be aware of everything going on around you on the road. Putting the phone to you ear limits the motion of your head and may mute out some of the sounds of the road.

I am going to start doing this soon, because as of July 1st, a new law goes into effect that bans drivers from using handheld phones while driving.

But Belem's point is that they're still holding the phones. Instead of holding it up to their ears, they put it on speaker and hold it up to their mouths like a walkie talkie or CB radio microphone.

I'm with Belem on this one - I think it's dumb and doesn't really help the driver drive any better. Instead of holding the phone to their ear, they're holding it right in front of their face. How about getting a bluetooth headset to use while driving - OR, just concentrate on the driving, and don't worry about talking on the phone!

Ditto. It's better than being to their ears, but put the phone down and drive.

I see it often and it's women of all ages, young and old (although older drivers are more likely to be seen holding phone to their ears).

Only time it REALLY bothers me is when it's someone who is trying to back out of a parking spot and doing a poor job. Inevitably, they're talking on the phone. What conversation could be going on that they couldn't say, "Hold on for one sec, pulling out of a parking spot, need to focus". Always takes way longer for them to get out of the parking lot and sometimes they come close to running into pedestrians or other cars. Could just be a Tallahassee thing, but I seem to see it at least a couple of times a week.

Picture of truck, please.

I see it mostly with older people. Maybe they feel they have a closer connection with the other party if they stare at the screen.

Exactly. Holding the thing in front of your face is not safer, nor is it legal in hands-free states. Either hold it to your ear, or get a hands-free device - you look like an idiot and you're just making it easier for the cops to spot you talking on your phone.

I think they do it so as not to smear their makeup and get the glass covered in makeup. Just a guess...

Gotcha, almost like the old Nextels.

While there is a thread going, I don't like the Bluetooth devices, but what do you guys recommend for a cell phone stand/mount/suction cup that I can mount so that I am able to use the phone hands free while driving.

I'm sure people think I'm crazy for driving down the road "talking to myself" when I'm using my Bluetooth. My car also has a screen that shows I have a text message and if I hit a button it reads out the text aloud. Won't let me reply until I pull over and put the car in park, though. Most newer cars offer this and it's so much safer.

I still get crazy when I see people texting and driving.
